Fantasy Upside
Dalton Schultz finished 2020 with the fifth-most receptions and 11th-most yards at the tight end position with a backup quarterback throwing majority of the season. The 2018 fourth-round pick eased the loss of Blake Jarwin less than one half into the season and was one of the better stories during a tumultuous season for the Cowboys. Jarwin is still rehabbing and is no lock to be a full-go once training camp opens, giving Schultz a leg-up on early work with Dak Prescott. A full season with Prescott and a delayed start to Jarwin’s 2021 campaign would make Schultz a cheap tight end option attached to an electric offense.
Fantasy Downside
Jarwin enters training camp a full go and looks like he did pre-ACL tear. If the majority of the tight end targets go to Jarwin, Schultz would retain zero fantasy value. A 50/50 split of targets would hurt both players.
2021 Bottom Line
There are a few ‘ifs’ attached to Schultz’s fantasy value. A split workload would keep Schultz on the fantasy radar as the season progresses, but his value is tied to the health of Jarwin, a player who went undrafted and then signed for four years ahead of 2020.
