Scouting report

DAL TE Dalton Schultz - 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Dalton Schultz finished 2020 with the fifth-most receptions and 11th-most yards at the tight end position with a backup quarterback throwing majority of the season. The 2018 fourth-round pick eased the loss of Blake Jarwin less than one half into the season and was one of the better stories during a tumultuous season for the Cowboys. Jarwin is still rehabbing and is no lock to be a full-go once training camp opens, giving Schultz a leg-up on early work with Dak Prescott. A full season with Prescott and a delayed start to Jarwin’s 2021 campaign would make Schultz a cheap tight end option attached to an electric offense.

Fantasy Downside

Jarwin enters training camp a full go and looks like he did pre-ACL tear. If the majority of the tight end targets go to Jarwin, Schultz would retain zero fantasy value. A 50/50 split of targets would hurt both players.

2021 Bottom Line

There are a few ‘ifs’ attached to Schultz’s fantasy value. A split workload would keep Schultz on the fantasy radar as the season progresses, but his value is tied to the health of Jarwin, a player who went undrafted and then signed for four years ahead of 2020.

DAL TE Dalton Schultz - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. New York Giants
Dalton Schultz is a predictable fantasy player at this point. He will post somewhere between 25 and 60 yards in a given week and will catch the occasional touchdown, making him a middling TE2 most weeks. Week 17’s matchup with the Giants will be no different, and Schultz is a low-upside option even if he does boast a decent target floor for the position. Schultz is an unexciting fantasy option but you could do worse at what is a barren position for fantasy.

DAL TE Dalton Schultz - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Philadelphia Eagles
With Andy Dalton under center, Dalton Schultz has solidified a role that keeps him in the low-end TE1 or high-end TE2 conversation on a weekly basis. Schultz has steadily gained between 30 and 50 yards each week and has a decent shot at a touchdown in the Dallas scheme. The Eagles are a middling matchup for tight ends, meaning Schultz projects for a decent floor this week even if his ceiling will always be limited. You could do worse for streaming options this week, and Schultz makes for a solid TE2 in deeper formats.

DAL TE Dalton Schultz - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. San Francisco 49ers
Dalton Schultz remains an ancillary part of the Dallas passing game where he attracts a modest amount of targets but has shown dependable hands and the ability to consistently return TE2 value. Whether he can be started as a TE1 streamer largely depends on the matchup and the Cowboys' passing volume for that particular week. Week 15 brings a matchup with the 49ers, a defense that has been hard on tight ends all season. San Francisco ranks as the 4th toughest matchup in the league for tight ends based on schedule-adjusted fantasy points allowed. Schultz is best regarded as a TE2 option this week.

DAL TE Dalton Schultz - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Cincinnati Bengals
Dalton Schultz has established a decent floor as a borderline TE1 due to his consistent usage in the Dallas offense. Schultz is averaging nearly six targets per game on the season, a healthy amount for a tight end. That being said, Schultz's range of outcomes in recent games has been very narrow, showing that his ceiling is capped playing alongside Amari Cooper, CeeDee Lamb, and Michael Gallup. The Bengals are not a tough matchup for opposing tight ends, meaning Schultz offers appeal as a streaming option this week. Consider Schultz a low-end TE1 or high-end TE2 this week.

DAL TE Dalton Schultz - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 at Baltimore Ravens
Dalton Schultz is not an exciting play, but he has had a fairly stable target floor since taking over the starting tight end role in Dallas. Schultz is averaging six targets per game in 2020, a number that demands attention at the tight end position. Baltimore is a tough defense in general, and that includes tight ends as the Ravens are among the ten most difficult matchups for the position according to our adjusted fantasy points allowed metric. Schultz's weekly target volume gives him a workable floor for fantasy, but his ceiling is low, especially in the difficult matchup. Consider Schultz a TE2 for Week 13.

DAL TE Dalton Schultz - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 vs. Washington Football Team
Dalton Schultz only turned his four catches in Week 11 into 25 yards, although he salvaged his day by catching the game-winning touchdown late. Schultz actually finished the game tied with CeeDee Lamb for second on the team in targets (6) behind only Amari Cooper (7). Schultz is not an exciting fantasy option as he primarily operates underneath for an offense that had struggled before Week 11, but he is getting enough looks from Dalton to warrant consideration as a TE2 or desperation streamer given the state of the tight end position for fantasy.
