Scouting report

LAR RB Darrell Henderson - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs Bears

The Darrell Henderson hype train slowed some with the addition of Sony Michel, but with Henderson in year two of Sean McVay’s system, he has a leg-up and also stands to see the majority of the passing-down work. His first test is against a staunch Bears rush defense. It enters 2021 as the 4th-best against running backs according to 4for4’s schedule-adjusted positional defensive rankings. Henderson will not be a 100-yard rusher in Week 1, especially with Michel on the team but he will be a player that can flirt with 100 total yards with Matthew Stafford as a more trusted passer than Jared Goff.

LAR RB Darrell Henderson - 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Darrell Henderson is now the lone back from the Rams 2020 backfield with Cam Akers injured and Malcolm Brown in Miami. Henderson was PFF’s 3rd-rated pass-blocking running back and has value in the passing game. His targets and receptions will keep him more than relevant should the Rams bring in another running back via free agency and the competition on the Rams roster is that in words only. Prior to Akers’ breakout in Week 13, Henderson had six games with double-digit rushes and multiple targets in a committee-like role. With no true competition on the Rams roster, Henderson’s touch upside is high.

Fantasy Downside

The running back position is volatile and we have seen players come off the street and take over backfields. If the Rams sign a free agent, Henderson’s current elevated ADP and projected production will come down. The Rams have also felt okay going away from Henderson as a top option, hence the drafting of Akers. He will have to navigate a brutal opening schedule with three straight matchups against top 10 run defenses to open the season, according to 4for4’s Schedule-Adjusted Positional Defensive Rankings.

Henderson is also not the biggest back at 5’8” 208 lbs. There are legit concerns about his ability to carry a starter’s load for a full season. Henderson’s 2020 ended Week 13 because of a high ankle sprain.

2021 Bottom Line

Henderson is in a prime spot to be an RB2 in a high-powered offense, but size concerns and the constant rumors of adding another option in the backfield make the former Memphis RB a medium risk with higher upside.

LAR RB Darrell Henderson - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Seattle

Henderson will once again be starting running back with Cam Akers expected to miss Week 16 with an ankle injury. Over the past two weeks, Henderson has a total of three carries for four yards, so it might be hard to expect much from him. He ran for a score in Week 10 against the Seattle Seahawks, but it was on seven carries for 28 yards, so be sure to temper expectations for him as he should be looked upon as an RB3 this week.

LAR RB Darrell Henderson - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs New York Jets

Henderson only had two carries for five yards last week against the New England Patriots. Henderson has now been regulated to backup duty as Cam Akers has established himself as the workhorse in this backfield. With such critical stakes in the fantasy playoffs, you’re better off elsewhere than adding Henderson to your starting lineup.

LAR RB Darrell Henderson - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs New England

Henderson ran the ball three times for 49 yards, one touchdown and caught 2-of-3 targets for 25 yards in last week’s contest against the Arizona Cardinals. Henderson was on the sideline for most of this game as rookie Cam Akers was given a team-high 21 carries. Henderson managed to salvage his fantasy day on a late 37-yard yard touchdown run, however, that shouldn’t instill faith in his fantasy managers. This Rams backfield appears to belong to Akers, so for the time being, do not expect anything more than RB4 numbers from Henderson this week.

LAR RB Darrell Henderson - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 at Arizona

Henderson had his worst game of the season last week against San Francisco as he carried the ball 10 times for 19 yards. Henderson just could not get anything going and ultimately was outplayed by ascending rookie Cam Akers. With Akers out-performing Henderson, he will eventually out touch him as well, rendering him irrelevant. It appears Henderson is starting to bottom out and should not be viewed as anything more than a fringe RB3.

LAR RB Darrell Henderson - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 vs San Francisco

Henderson easily had his worst game of the season last week against Tampa Bay, as he ran the ball eight times for five yards and caught two balls for four yards. This backfield is more of a mess now than ever as the official inclusion of Cam Akers with the already plodding touches of Malcolm Brown make each back almost unstartable. Henderson once dominated the touches in this backfield, but that seems long removed. Consider each of the three backs as RB3s until one emerges from the group.
