Scouting report

CHI RB David Montgomery - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Jacksonville Jaguars

David Montgomery's hot streak continued last week, partly because the Bears gave him an absurd number of touches (33). Montgomery finished with 162 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns as he's come alive in recent weeks. Over his past four games, Montgomery is averaging 142.8 scrimmage yards with six total touchdowns. To make things better, he gets a great matchup against the Jaguars (No. 29 aFPA) this week, who have allowed the fourth-most rushing yards to running backs this season. With Montgomery's hot streak and the great matchup, he should be viewed as a must-start RB1 in Week 16.

CHI RB David Montgomery - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Minnesota Vikings

David Montgomery has come alive lately, and he continued his 100-yard streak to three games last week. Montgomery is averaging 136.3 scrimmage yards over his past three games as he gets involved on the ground and in the air. He's also scored a touchdown in each of those three games. Oddly enough, his success has come since returning from injury and the game he missed was against the Vikings — his opponent this week. Minnesota has allowed the ninth-most rushing yards to running backs this season, so Montgomery's success should continue. He should be trusted as an RB1 play in Week 15 as he rides a hot streak.

CHI RB David Montgomery - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs. Houston Texans

David Montgomery has been amazing since returning from injury, with another productive game in Week 13. He finished with 111 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns, giving him back-to-back games with 100 yards and a score. Montgomery also continues to be involved as a receiver since Tarik Cohen's injury, averaging 4.1 receptions per game without him. For comparison, Montgomery averaged 1.6 receptions a season ago while playing with Cohen. Expect another great game from Montgomery as he faces a Texans defense giving up the second-most fantasy points to opposing running backs. The Texans have allowed the most rushing yards and fifth-most receiving yards to running backs this season. We like Montgomery as a strong RB1 play in Week 14.

CHI RB David Montgomery - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs. Detroit Lions

David Montgomery had his best game of the season last week, finishing with his first 100-yard rushing game of the season (11 carries, 103 yards). Montgomery also added 5-40-1 on six targets as a receiver. It was just his third touchdown of the season, and his first since Week 5. Expect another solid game from Montgomery in Week 13 as he faces a Lions defense allowing the most fantasy points to opposing running backs. Detroit has given up the fourth-most total rushing yards, fourth-most total receiving yards, and an absurd 21 total touchdowns to running backs this season. Montgomery should be viewed as a strong RB1 play in Week 13. The Bears had a combined 124 rushing yards against the Lions in Week 1 between three backs, but that was back when Tarik Cohen was healthy. Montgomery gets the bulk of the work in this backfield, meaning he should be in for a great game.

CHI RB David Montgomery - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 at Green Bay Packers

David Montgomery cleared the concussion protocol and should return in Week 12 after missing Week 10 (Bears had a bye Week 11). Montgomery was averaging around 18 touches per game before his injury, making him a high-volume play. He hasn't been overly productive, averaging 76 yards with just two touchdowns on the season. But he's consistent enough to be a reliable RB3 play. This week he gets a favorable matchup against the Packers who are 29th in aFPA running backs. He'll be more of a low-end RB2 play in Week 12. Montgomery may see a slight bump as a receiving threat as the Packers have allowed the most total receiving yards to running backs this season.

CHI RB David Montgomery - Week 10 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 vs. Minnesota Vikings

UPDATE: Montgomery has been ruled OUT.

David Montgomery exited early last week with a concussion, leaving his Week 10 status in doubt. The good news is the Bears don't play until Monday, giving him an extra day of rest. The bad news is fantasy owners will have to make their decision Sunday and we may not know Montgomery's status by then. If he is active, he'll retain his RB2 status against the Vikings. If he's inactive, then there may not be an option that'll be worth it. Ryan Nall is unproven and Cordarrelle Patterson only has WR designation in most fantasy leagues despite him mostly playing RB this season. The Bears also have Lamar Miller on their practice squad, so he'd be a desperation flex play if activated.

CHI RB David Montgomery - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 at Tennessee Titans

David Montgomery finished with a season-high 21 carries last week and 23 touches total as he's now averaged 19 touches per game in Tarik Cohen's absence. Montgomery has been far from dominant, averaging just 4.5 yards per touch with only two touchdowns on the season. But the sheer volume he receives gives him enough production to warrant starting each week. He likely won't run wild and give you a 30-point performance, but he'll provide that nice baseline double-digit game you can rely on. He'll be a strong RB2 play this week in a favorable matchup against the Titans (No. 27 aFPA).
