Fantasy Upside
Sometimes a change of scenery can do a talented veteran such as DeAngelo Williams some good. The Carolina Panthers’ all-time leading rusher joins the Steelers as the backup to LeVeon Bell. With Bell suspended – as of this writing – for the first three games of the season, Williams should get plenty of chances to carry the ball early. What role he carves out for himself after that is up to him.
Fantasy Downside
The 32-year-old Williams has logged 1,432 career rushing attempts and, as a backup, he doesn’t have a defined role outside of being the main guy during Bell’s suspension. Last season, the backup to Bell, LeGarrette Blount, logged 10 carries in just two games before being released after Week 12.
Bottom Line
Williams should be a handcuff for Bell owners. And perhaps he’ll be good enough to help you win some games while the star running back is out. Outside of that, however, he doesn’t have a lot of value as long as Bell is on the field. He also managed to play in just six games last season because of injuries after missing just one game the previous three seasons.
