SF WR Deebo Samuel - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Los Angeles Rams

Deebo Samuel hasn’t had that “explosion” week in fantasy yet this year – he’s the WR26 in half-PPR fantasy points through three games. However, he’s one of the few players with three straight double-digit fantasy points and has been a steady and prolific part of this offense. The explosion should come.

This week, Samuel faces a Rams defense that allowed 14 catches to Marquise Brown last week. Samuel scored a touchdown in each of his three games against the Rams last year – including the playoffs – and with almost 10 touches per game in his hybrid rusher-receiver role, he’s a must-start in all formats.

SF WR Deebo Samuel - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Denver Broncos

Deebo Samuel had four carries and five catches for a total of 97 yards from scrimmage last week against the Seahawks. Samuel said he didn’t want to run the ball as much this year, but he has 12 carries through two games, but right now he’s on pace to nearly double his rushing attempts from a year ago.

This week, Samuel faces a tough Broncos defense that has only allowed nine points in the past six quarters and held the Texans’ passing offense to just 154 yards last week. Samuel is a must-start every week, but temper expectations in what could be a low-scoring affair.

SF WR Deebo Samuel - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Seattle Seahawks

Deebo Samuel said he didn’t want to run the ball as much this year, but the coaching staff must not have heard him, because he ran eight times for 52 yards and a touchdown against the Bears in Week 1. He also caught two balls for 14 yards. It was encouraging to see him get eight targets from new starter Trey Lance. It was less encouraging that he only caught two of them, though the nasty weather conditions were certainly a factor. Most importantly, Samuel is clearly still the primary cog in this offense.

This week, expect Samuel to roll against the Seahawks. Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton combined for eight catches, 174 yards, and a touchdown against this defense on Monday night, so there should be plenty of room for the 49ers’ receivers to operate. Samuel had a pair of touchdowns the last time he played Seattle, and he’s a must-start this week as a WR1 option in fantasy.

SF WR Deebo Samuel - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Chicago Bears

Deebo Samuel had a phenomenal year in 2021, finishing as the fantasy WR2 behind 14 total touchdowns. There’s some uncertainty heading into the season, as the 49ers are set to start Trey Lance at quarterback and Samuel wants to play running back less often. Samuel caught six passes for 121 yards and a touchdown over Lance’s two starts last season, so the two have shown the ability to link up, even if it looks like the team will be even more run-heavy with Lance behind center.

Samuel has a tough matchup to start the season against a Bears defense that ranked sixth in the league in aFPA to opposing wide receivers last season. Samuel’s ability to rack up yards after the catch and turn big plays at any moment still make him a must-start, despite the rough matchup. We have him marked down to fringe WR1 territory, but he should still be active in all league formats.

SF WR Deebo Samuel - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
It appears more progress has been made between the 49ers and Deebo Samuel on a new deal for the key offensive weapon. 49ers GM John Lynch said at his press conference as training camp opened that Samuel had reported. It doesn’t sound like an extension is imminent, but Lynch sounded optimistic that something will get done. And that's a key here. Remember, Samuel officially requested a trade in April after coming off the best year of his career. He is due a $3.986 million base salary this season, the final year of his rookie contract. Easily lost in all the drama, Samuel was named first-team All-Pro after totaling 1,405 receiving yards, 365 rushing yards, and 14 total touchdowns from scrimmage. As 4for4's John Paulsen noted, Samuel started to see a bigger rushing role in Week 10. From Week 1 to Week 9, he averaged 6.1 catches for 110 yards and 0.50 touchdowns (for 17.6 half-PPR PPG) on 10.0 targets per game. Starting in Week 10, he averaged 3.5 catches for 65 yards and 0.25 touchdowns on 5.0 targets per game. However, he averaged 19.9 half-PPR PPG behind 43 yards rushing and 0.88 rushing touchdowns per game. He averaged 6.6 rushes per game in that span compared to just 0.8 rushes per game from Week 1 to Week 9. He finished as the overall WR3.

2022 Fantasy Downside
The versatility that made him one of the most dangerous offensive players in the NFL apparently is also a major issue for Samuel.

2022 Bottom Line
The fact that his receiving numbers diminished as he become more of a threat on the ground isn't surprising. It's also promising. Although he takes a bit of a hit, the receiving totals over the first nine games were plenty solid. That said, the uncertainty about that rushing equity is the only thing keeping Samuel out of our top five at the position.

SF WR Deebo Samuel - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Houston Texans

Deebo Samuel had a great game against the Titans last week, catching nine of 11 targets for 159 yards. He also added 32 yards on five rush attempts. He was held out of the end zone for the first time in five games, but now has at least five carries in six straight games and is one of the primary components of the San Francisco offense.

This week, Samuel faces a Texans defense that ranks 28th in aFPA to opposing wide receivers. If Trey Lance starts, downgrade Samuel a little, but not too much. Despite the decreased quality of targets he received, he still had nine balls thrown his way and ran in a touchdown the last time Lance started a game. Samuel is too talented to avoid, so keep him active, regardless of who is behind center.

SF WR Deebo Samuel - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Tennessee Titans

Deebo Samuel has been kind of quiet in the passing game over the past few weeks, with just one reception in each of his previous three games before catching four against the Falcons last Sunday. However, he’s been used consistently in the run game and has six rushing touchdowns over his past five games. He had four catches for 60 yards and six carries for 29 yards and a touchdown last week, and the 49ers clearly view him as a primary component of their offense.

This week, Samuel faces a Titans defense that ranks 30th in aFPA to opposing wide receivers. It should be a great game for him and another full day of work. Fantasy managers shouldn’t hesitate to start him in an excellent matchup and we have him ranked as a solid WR1.
