LAC RB Gus Edwards - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs Denver Broncos

When the Chargers fell behind early, it was game over for Gus Edwards. Kimani Vidal saw more work as Los Angeles were playing catch-up. Unfortunately, that's the nature of playing Edwards. He finished with 8 carries for 23 yards against a defense that had been hemorrhaging yards on the ground of late.

It has been easier to run on Denver this season, so in theory this should be a good spot for Edwards. Denver is 23rd aFPA against running backs so it's not awful. Edwards is a back-end RB3 or flex option and you'll have to hope he scores a touchdown.

LAC RB Gus Edwards - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Gus Edwards continues to be a touchdown-or-bust option that doesn't offer a ton of upside. Edwards is also starting to split more work with Kimani Vidal who continues to be more efficient.

While this is a neutral matchup for the Chargers rushing game as the Bucs rank 13th aFPA against running backs, it isn't an elite spot to feel comfortable with Edwards. It all comes down to whether or not you think Edwards gets a touchdown. If he does, he likely returns an RB3/flex value. If he doesn't score, you'll regret you have him in your lineup. If I have a better option, I'm looking elsewhere.

LAC RB Gus Edwards - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 at Atlanta Falcons

Gus Edwards steps up into a major role as J.K. Dobbins is now on injured reserve. With Edwards featured in the leading role, at least for now, it will be interesting to see how involved Edwards is on passing downs. Given Kimani Vidal's first touchdown of his career was on a reception, it's safe to assume he'll take the third-down role.

The Falcons are a neutral matchup against running backs as they are 14th aFPA this season. Edwards is better suited in leagues that aren't PPR, but he still has flex appeal in PPR leagues. Edwards is RB30 on the week.

LAC RB Gus Edwards - Week 11 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 vs. Cincinnati Bengals

Gus Edwards was returned last week and was back in his backup role to J.K. Dobbins. He was more efficient than Dobbins but only saw 10 touches to Dobbins' 18. With Edwards back, the Chargers looked more run-heavy approach against the Titans. We'll have to see if that continues.

The Bengals are 8th aFPA against running backs, so a tougher matchup and a smaller portion of the workload isn't the recipe for someone you want to start in your fantasy lineup. Edwards is a touchdown-reliant flex option this week.

LAC RB Gus Edwards - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Carolina Panthers

As long as J.K. Dobbins is healthy and looking as explosive as he did last week on his long touchdown run you're essentially going to be hoping Gus Edwards hits the end zone once or twice himself. Unfortunately that's really the only path forward with a healthy Dobbins. Jamaal Williams is a similar back in a somewhat similar situation and he managed to put up about 12 points last week with a touchdown. That's about what you're hoping for from Edwards. He's a flex option if you're desperate because the matchup is pretty good.

LAC RB Gus Edwards - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Las Vegas Raiders

Following Greg Roman to the west coast, Gus Edwards reunites with his former offensive coordinator in what should be a run-heavy offense. We're expecting a pretty even split between Edwards and J.K. Dobbins with Edwards likely having the goal-line role and Dobbins more of the pass-catching role.

Edwards is closer to a flex option on the week, and while it isn't an overly difficult matchup against the Raiders, the split with Dobbins and lower total don't make him an appealing start in most leagues.

LAC RB Gus Edwards - 2024 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Gus Edwards isn't the most talented back in the league, but prior to 2023 he had proven to be a high yards-per-attempt guy and had the ability to gain yards after contact at an elite clip and gain a high percentage of runs for a first down. Last year, with more of the workload, he did struggle a bit with the Ravens and a revamped offensive line. Now with the Chargers' talented offensive line and back in Greg Roman's run scheme, he should be able to get back to the more efficient runner he was in 2022. He'll be the first in line at the goal line which should bode well for him.

Fantasy Downside
Edwards isn't going to catch a lot of passes and the offense itself won't be a high-volume attack. It's also possible with more of the workload we see another dip in efficiency with more work. Edwards could also cede more work to J.K. Dobbins or Kimani Vidal as we don't totally know the rotation as of yet.

2024 Bottom Line
This seems pretty simple, at RB36 in half-point PPR Underdog he seems like a solid bet with the majority of the goal-line work in what should be a run-heavy offense with Jim Harbaugh and Greg Roman at the helm. In full-point PPR leagues, he should be docked as he's unlikely to catch many passes and won't have the full workload at running back anyway. In redraft leagues, his ADP ranges anywhere from 100-126th overall, so he's also a buy on sites where his ADP is in the 120s.
