ARI WR Marquise Brown - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
After losing Christian Kirk in free agency, the Cardinals bolstered their receiving corps by trading for Marquise Brown during the first round of April's draft. The move reunites Brown with his former college quarterback Kyler Murray. Brown caught 91 passes for 1,008 yards with six touchdowns in 2021. No Cardinals receiver had over 1,000 yards last season. Kirk was the closest with 982 yards on 77 receptions. Four days after the trade, the NFL announced it had suspended new teammate DeAndre Hopkins for the first six games of 2022. For a few days, it looked like Murray was going to have one of the best one-two combinations in football. Instead, Brown will be asked to play a greater role. Fortunately, as ESPN.com's Josh Weinfuss noted, one hope in trading for Brown was that, should Hopkins go down again, they would have Brown to fill his role. Now, with that situation a reality, it's fortuitous that Murray has a rapport with Brown. The two were college teammates at Oklahoma in 2017 and 2018, the latter of which saw Brown accumulate 1,318 yards and 10 touchdowns on 75 catches.

2022 Fantasy Downside
Brown will have an opportunity to establish himself as the team's WR1 early on but Hopkins' return will be a limiting factor for his season-long upside.

2022 Bottom Line
Brown finished as WR22 last season, but there are some numbers worth noting. Per ESPN's Mike Clay, Brown was 11th in fantasy points per game in 11 outings with Lamar Jackson, but 67th in five games while Jackson was out. So quarterback play will be critical and his familiarity with Murray will matter. As much as we might still prefer to pay WR3 prices for the former Raven, expecting him to return full WR2 value isn't a reach and paying for it isn't unreasonable.

BAL WR Marquise Brown - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Los Angeles Rams

Marquise “Hollywood” Brown had five catches for 44 yards last week against the Bengals. Brown's numbers have been underwhelming the past six games, but he’s still averaging 10.2 targets over that span. Something’s gotta give with Brown and he seems poised for another big game at some point soon. He’s been held out of the end zone for seven games, after scoring six times in his first seven games this year.

This week, Brown faces a Rams defense that ranks 12th in aFPA to opposing wide receivers. He may draw a tough assignment against Jalen Ramsey, but Brown’s targets still give him WR2 potential. We have him ranked inside our top-30 this week, so he’s a fringe WR2. Start him with tempered expectations.

BAL WR Marquise Brown - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Cincinnati Bengals

Marquise “Hollywood” Brown only had 43 yards last week against the Packers, but he was targeted 14 times and ended up with 10 catches. He’s been quiet the past several weeks, but his reception volume hasn’t dropped below five since mid-October, giving him some steady PPR production, even if he’s been held out of the end zone in six straight games.

This week, Brown has a nice matchup against a Bengals defense that ranks 23rd in aFPA to opposing wide receivers. Fantasy managers should feel comfortable sliding him into fringe WR2/WR3 territory with the volume he’s getting, and hope for the upside he brings with his big-play potential. Start him.

BAL WR Marquise Brown - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Green Bay Packers

Marquise “Hollywood” Brown had five catches for 41 yards last week against the Browns. He hasn’t put up big numbers in several weeks now, but he’s still getting plenty of targets. He has at least five targets in every game this year, and at least seven in all but three.

This week, Brown faces a Packers defense that ranks 13th in aFPA to opposing wide receivers. In a tough matchup, with questions at the quarterback position, Brown is relegated to boom-or-bust WR3 status. He’s a threat to make a big play at any time, but build some variance into expectations this week.

BAL WR Marquise Brown - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Cleveland Browns

Marquise “Hollywood” Brown had five catches for 55 yards last week against the Steelers and has struggled to put up big numbers in recent weeks, despite a steady stream of targets. The Ravens’ passing game has struggled in general, however, and it seems like it’ll only be a matter of time before they figure things out and Brown flirts with WR1 numbers again. He’s still getting lots of work, as he’s 13th in the league with 99 targets this season.

This week, Brown faces a Browns defense that ranks 19th in aFPA to opposing wide receivers. With a reasonable matchup and the targets he’s getting, Brown should continue to put up WR2 numbers. We have him ranked just inside our top 20 this week and let’s hope he gets back to the end zone against the division-rival Browns.

BAL WR Marquise Brown - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 at Pittsburgh Steelers

Marquise “Hollywood” Brown was back in action last week and caught eight of 10 targets for 51 yards. While the yardage and lack of touchdowns the past couple of games are discouraging for fantasy managers, his targets are wildly encouraging. He has double-digit targets in six of 10 games this season, including in five of his last six.

This week, Brown faces a Steelers defense that ranks 27th in aFPA to opposing wide receivers. Brown should continue to be heavily featured in the offense and seems due for a touchdown after missing out in each of his last three active games. We have him ranked as a solid WR2 option this week and he should be active in all formats.

BAL WR Marquise Brown - Week 11 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 at Chicago Bears

Marquise “Hollywood” Brown had a rough game last week against the Dolphins, gaining just 37 yards on six receptions. He was targeted 13 times, however, and now has double-digit targets in four of his past five games. It’s good to see him continuing the be fed the ball, even with Rashod Bateman in the lineup.

This week, Brown faces a Bears defense that ranks 25th in aFPA to opposing wide receivers. It should be a nice bounce-back game for Brown, whose targets make him a must-start every week. He’s had only a couple of down games this season, and expect him to get back on track against Chicago. Start him as a fringe WR1.

Update: Brown is out with a thigh injury, so be sure to get him out of your lineup.
