BAL WR Marquise Brown - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Kansas City Chiefs

Marquise “Hollywood” Brown caught all six balls thrown his way last week against the Raiders, gaining 69 yards and scoring a touchdown to open up the season. Brown now has seven touchdowns over his past seven regular-season games, dating back to last year, and he’s been more consistent in targets than most think. He had 100 targets in 2020 and 71 as a rookie.

The Chiefs ranked fifth in aFPA to opposing wide receivers last season, so it’s not a great matchup for Brown. The Browns were able to move the ball by throwing more to the tight end position last week, but the upside is there in a game that could be high-scoring. Brown is risky but should be considered a solid WR3 with upside going into Week 2.

BAL WR Marquise Brown - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Las Vegas Raiders

Marquise “Hollywood” Brown led the team with 100 targets last season and with rookie first-round pick Rashod Bateman shelved for at least the first few weeks of the season, Brown should once again see primary receiver targets. He’s been wildly inconsistent, however, and this offense has been focused on a ground attack. That being said, eight touchdowns last season and significant downfield speed gives him boom-or-bust upside in any given week.

The Raiders were awful on defense last year – 21st in aFPA to opposing wide receivers – and while they should improve this season, it’s still a nice matchup for Brown. That being said, it’s hard to trust any of the Ravens’ wide receivers and keep an eye on Brown’s health status. He should play but is hobbled. Either way, fantasy managers should probably avoid him in all but the deepest of leagues.

BAL WR Marquise Brown - 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Marquise “Hollywood” Brown improved last year from his rookie season, even if it wasn’t at the clip expected by fantasy owners who took him to be their WR2 or WR3. He caught 58 balls for 769 yards and eight touchdowns, and he only had two truly awful games. He also finished strong with six touchdowns in his final eight games. The Ravens have said they want to throw the ball more, and all the pass-catchers should benefit if that’s true.

Fantasy Downside

The biggest problem with Brown has been consistent production, but the concern for his fantasy upside heading into this season is his target share. The Ravens already have been last in the league in pass attempts since Lamar Jackson took over, and now they added Sammy Watkins and first-round rookie Rashod Bateman out of Minnesota. It isn’t out of the realm of possibilities that Brown could still lead the team in targets, but Bateman definitely looks like a potential alpha receiver, which could spell trouble for the already enigmatic Brown.

2021 Bottom Line

Brown is available in the ninth round in 12-team leagues, making him a pretty decent value pick considering his upside. There’s also an argument to be made that his style of playmaking could benefit from reduced defensive attention and that his efficiency could increase, mitigating the ill effects of reduced targets. Still, I like him better in best ball formats where you don’t have to guess which week he’s going to score. In most league formats, wait five rounds and get the discounted Bateman, who could also lead the team in targets.

BAL WR Marquise Brown - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Cincinnati Bengals

Marquise “Hollywood” Brown has been up-and-down all year, but he’s rattled off double-digit PPR points in five straight games since his goose egg against the Titans in late November. He had just 25 yards last week against the Giants, but caught all four balls thrown his way and found the end zone for the fourth time in five games.

This week, Brown has significant upside against a Bengals defense that ranks 21st in aFPA to opposing wide receivers. Brandin Cooks crushed this secondary last week, and the Ravens are still playing to secure their playoff spot, so Brown should be considered a risky WR2 with upside.

BAL WR Marquise Brown - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. New York Giants

Marquise “Hollywood” Brown caught six of seven passes last week for 98 yards. He’s been inconsistent this season, but is on a nice little streak the past four weeks. He has double-digit PPR points in each of his past four games, and has three touchdowns over that span – albeit aided by a 44-yard touchdown and a 70-yard touchdown.

This week, Brown faces a Giants defense that ranks 14th in aFPA to opposing wide receivers. Expect the Ravens to try to control the game on the ground, which is an effective way for them to rack up wins, dating back to last season. That makes Brown a boom-or-bust option, which is right where he usually lands. We have him just outside WR2 territory and he’s worth considering for teams that need maximum upside.

BAL WR Marquise Brown - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

Marquise “Hollywood” Brown had 50 yards and a touchdown on two receptions last week. He was targeted six times as well, his third straight game with at least six. Brown has three games in a row with touchdowns, but his production looks pretty sporadic, and he’s only had one game over 100 yards this year. Fantasy owners should be concerned about his lack of consistency and about the trend of the Ravens’ offense to be run-heavy.

Brown has a nice matchup against the Jaguars this week, who rank 23rd in aFPA to opposing wide receivers. However, Brown’s inconsistent production and reliance on the occasional touchdown and/or big play, make him super risky, even in a great matchup, for the fantasy playoffs. We have him as boom-or-bust WR3 option, and he should considered a risky option in most leagues.

BAL WR Marquise Brown - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Cleveland Browns

Marquise “Hollywood” Brown had just 39 yards against the Cowboys last week, but he caught five balls, was targeted eight times for the second straight game, and caught his second touchdown in as many outings. Brown now has five touchdowns on the season, which help his measly 516 yards and 36 receptions. If he can keep getting eight targets though, he’ll get back into the good graces of fantasy owners.

This week, Brown goes up against a Browns defense that just gave up a ton to Corey Davis, and ranks 22nd in aFPA to opposing wide receivers. That makes Brown a solid upside play, especially with a couple of touchdowns in the last two weeks, but it’s still way too risky to feel good about starting a Ravens’ wide receiver given the lack of production throughout the season. Consider him a deep-league, boom-or-bust WR3 option.
