DET RB Jahmyr Gibbs - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 at Baltimore Ravens

Jahmyr Gibbs is returning from a hamstring injury that sidelined him in Week 6. He looks like he’ll return in Week 7 but he’s been mostly a change-of-pace back to this point as a rookie. David Montgomery might be out but the Lions will likely give some of those touches to Craig Reynolds. However, a combination of a bunch of teams on a bye and Gibbs’ fungus ability still make him an RB2 candidate this week against the Ravens.

DET RB Jahmyr Gibbs - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Carolina Panthers

With David Montgomery back, Jahmyr Gibbs went back to being a limited player for the Lions, playing under 40% of the snaps in Week 4 against the Packers and touching the ball 12 times. Montgomery had THIRTY-FOUR TOUCHES in his return from a thigh injury. If that doesn't tell you Detroit's strategy, who knows what will? Gibbs is a fine flex play, but it's now time to temper expectations each week for the rookie as long as Montgomery is healthy.

DET RB Jahmyr Gibbs - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Green Bay Packers

With David Montgomery out, Jahmyr Gibbs saw 17 carries against the Falcons, more than Weeks 1 and 2 combined (14). However, he caught just one pass. Still, he totaled 82 yards in the win. He may be the lead back again. Montgomery remains questionable and the Lions are on a short week, so they may play it safe with Montgomery. That would put Gibbs in line to get most of the work again against the Packers, making him a worthy RB2 slot this week.

DET RB Jahmyr Gibbs - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Atlanta Falcons

Jahmyr Gibbs saw much more use in the passing game in Week 2, catching seven passes for 39 yards against the Seahawks. He may see more work on the ground as well this week as chances are David Montgomery will not play Sunday. Gibbs was already a good play thanks to his receiving ability. His value only goes up now. Get him in your lineups against the Falcons.

DET RB Jahmyr Gibbs - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Seattle Seahawks

Jahmyr Gibbs only had 9 touches in Week 1, but there shouldn't be any reason to worry. He's involved in the passing game and should get more work as the season progresses. We could see that this week in a good matchup against the Seahawks, who allowed three rushing touchdowns last week against the Rams. Gibbs is a strong RB2 play this week.

DET RB Jahmyr Gibbs - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Kansas City Chiefs

The Lions are ready to unleash their first-round running back in Jahmyr Gibbs and the excitement is high on what he can add to the passing offense. He’ll take over the D’Andre Swift role in Detroit and should also see touches on the ground as well. He was a very successful running back at Alabama after all. He’s also facing a Chiefs defense that was very favorable for opposing running backs in 2022, allowing the lost receptions to the position. The Lions want to get off to a fast start this season so expect Gibbs to see plenty of work Thursday, making him a very strong and arguably top-10 fantasy option this week.

DET RB Jahmyr Gibbs - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
If a team drafts you high in the NFL Draft, they usually have a plan for you and are very high on you. We can say that about the Lions and Jahmyr Gibbs, the No. 12 pick in last April's draft. Gibbs is expected to take the D'Andre Swift role, meaning he could be involved early and often in the passing game, boosting his PPR value.

Fantasy Downside
The Lions also brought in former Bear David Montgomery, who will take over the Jamaal Williams role. As a result, Gibbs may not see a full workload on the ground.

2023 Bottom Line
Despite sharing the work with Montgomery, Gibbs still has plenty of upside. He caught 44 passes last season at Alabama. For the record, Swift caught 48 passes and saw 70 targets last season in Detroit and finished as RB21 in total PPR points. That was also with missing three games. He was RB16 in PPR points per game. Gibbs is a solid RB2 with RB1 upside.
