Scouting report

BUF RB James Cook - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Jacksonville Jaguars (London)
James Cook's numbers weren't as good as they were the previous two weeks, but he still got 13 touches for 77 yards and a touchdown to justify his ranking from last week. He is still considered the featured back for the Bills even though his snaps fell to a season-low 40%.

Cook faces the Jaguars this week who are ranked 6th in aFPA to running backs. We expect him to still see the ball close to 20 times this Sunday with last week being more of an anomaly.

With the tough matchup, we rate Cook as a solid RB2 for Week 5. Cook has the potential to be a RB1 on certain weeks, but the Jags defense might give him some trouble in the run game.

BUF RB James Cook - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Miami Dolphins
James Cook has become the most reliable Bills fantasy running back in recent years. He rushed for 98 yards and added 14 yards receiving. He had 17 snaps which has helped him achieve those type of numbers. The only negative is he is looking for his first touchdown of the season.

Cook will face Miami, who is ranked 27th in aFPA to running backs. Not much of a history for him against the Fins with only six carries in the two games as a rookie. As long as he keeps getting 15+ touches, his fantasy stock will continue to rise.

Cook rates as a low-end RB1 for Week 3. We like the matchup and the Bills offense should have a big day across the board at home.

BUF RB James Cook - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Washington Commanders
James Cook's fantasy value continues to climb. He had 21 touches last Sunday for 159 total yards. It was the first time he has had more 20 touches in a game during his short career. The Bills are definitely interested in him getting the football even though he only was on the field for 59% of the snaps.

The Bills face the Commanders who are ranked 2nd in aFPA to running backs. The touches are pushing Cook up the rankings, but this matchup should be a tough one on the road.

Start Cook as a solid RB2 for Week 2. The touches will be key to watch as the season progresses. If he continues to pile them up, he will head towards RB1 status because the Bills offense will produce.

BUF RB James Cook - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Las Vegas Raiders
James Cook started the season with 16 touches for 63 yards and zero touchdowns. Going over the 15-touch mark is a good sign considering he only play 59% of the offensive snaps. Cook will be used more moving forward and the production should be hire in the future as well.

Cook faces a below-average Raiders defense this Sunday. The expectation is the Bills offense to recover after a so-so outing in the opener. Cook will be part of the game plan in the running and passing game.

Cook ranks a solid RB2 for Week 2. Expect 15+ touches again and better fantasy numbers. We expect him to be closer to the 70% mark for snaps as the season gets going which should increase his production

BUF RB James Cook - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at New York Jets
As the backup last season, James Cook showed the Bills enough in order to move into the No. 1 slot on the depth chart to start this season. He averaged 5.7 yards per carry and had some games where he showed what he is capable of.

Against the Jets, Cook had eight carries for 21 yards. That's a small sample size, but New York's defense is very good so we aren't expecting a big game for the Bills in terms of running the ball.

Cook rates a high-end RB3 or flex for Week 1. Expect 75-80 total yards from scrimmage. His teammate Damien Harris is more likely to score a touchdown, so that won't be a strength of Cook.

BUF RB James Cook - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
James Cook had a slow start to his rookie season, but ended up a valuable fantasy running back once he settled in. He was a consistent RB3 the second half of the season and was seeing up to 30% of the snaps. He should be the starting running back to start the season and his touches should be up in 2023. He will also be used more in the passing game this season.

Fantasy Downside
Although Cook might be the first running back to see the field each week, he will be splitting time with the recently acquired Damien Harris. Cook isn't a three-down back and the red zone work is likely to go to Harris. This will cut into his touches.

2023 Bottom Line
Cook is the best option on the Buffalo roster in PPR leagues as he will be enough in the passing game. He ranks as an RB3 or Flex going into the season, but his ADP has him going in the 8th-9th round area and that might be a little high. He's probably getting that attention because he is technically the first running back on the depth chart. But you can likely see the same production or close to it from Harris a couple rounds later.

BUF RB James Cook - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Cincinnati Bengals
Rookie James Cook had a career-high 99 rushing yards on 11 carries as Buffalo was able to control the line of scrimmage last week. His fantasy stock continues to rise as he has put up good numbers as the Bills' change-of-pace back behind Devin Singletary.

Cook will face Cincinnati who is ranked 12th in aFPA to running backs. The Bengals have been tough against the run in recent weeks and we expect the passing game to be highlighted for the Bills. Cook will be involved enough to warrant a start as a low-end RB3 or Flex for Week 17.
