Scouting report

CIN QB Joe Burrow - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 @ Kansas City Chiefs
It's all but certain that Tee Higgins is going to miss his second straight game, and he might mean a little more to this offense than many were giving him credit for. Joe Burrow had a measly 5.66 yards per attempt in Week 1, failing to reach 175 yards against an admittedly tough Patriots defense. Things may be better here in Kansas City, but it's a better idea to find someone to fill in for him while his wrist and Higgins get situated.

CIN QB Joe Burrow - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. New England Patriots
Joe Burrow would have to have an otherworldly season to finish as a top-5 QB option, but he has done it before, as recently as the 2022 season. It's understandable why risk-averse managers are a little worried about Burrow's injury history and the possibility that Tee Higgins and/or Ja'Marr Chase could miss Week 1. Regardless, he should still be considered a top-12 option.

CIN QB Joe Burrow - 2024 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Injuries mostly derailed Joe Burrow's 2023 season, but in his brief period of good health (Weeks 5-10), he was fantasy's QB6. Each of the five games in that sample resulted in a multi-touchdown performance, with him going for 280+ yards in four of them. When healthy, those are the types of numbers Burrow has put up across his career; a QB5-QB8 with minimal rushing contribution, supporting multiple pass-catching options as a tide that lifts all boats.

Fantasy Downside
Whether they're freak injuries or not, Burrow has dealt with a multitude of them since coming into the league in 2020, so what's to say they won't continue to mount going forward? While the team added Jermaine Burton to add more pop out of their WR3, they lost OC Brian Callahan to the Titans and long-time running back Joe Mixon to the Texans. Burrow has played with Callahan and Mixon for the entirety of his career, so it's worth wondering how he will adjust without those two pillars.

2024 Bottom Line
Fifteen years ago, options like Burrow, C.J. Stroud, and Dak Prescott might have been the first three quarterbacks off the board, with ADPs in the opening rounds of the draft. Nowadays, they slide down boards due to their lack of rushing, no matter how good they are as "real" quarterbacks. Burrow would have to have an otherworldly season to finish as a top-5 QB option, but he has done it before, as recently as the 2022 season. It's understandable why risk-averse drafters would prefer to fade Burrow due to his injury history, but he offers a type of fantasy upside that is hard to come by with non-rushing QBs in today's NFL.

CIN QB Joe Burrow - Week 11 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 at Baltimore Ravens
Joe Burrow threw for 347 yards and two touchdowns last week, but it was in a loss and he ended up contributing to that loss with two interceptions. It was his first turnovers in the last three games. Burrow has been playing at a high level in recent weeks, and this was just a temporary setback. He should still be playing as expected.

Burrow faces the Ravens who are ranked fourth in aFPA to quarterbacks. In the first meeting earlier this season, he threw for 222 yards, two touchdowns and an interception against Baltimore. The short week won't help and Burrow will be without Tee Higgins again which doesn't help.

Start Burrow as a low-end QB1 for Week 11. The battles against the Ravens are always tough and although his numbers will be acceptable for his managers, he won't be one of the top fantasy quarterbacks,

CIN QB Joe Burrow - Week 10 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 vs. Houston Texans
Joe Burrow has completed 77% of his passes over the past two games, hasn't thrown an interception and has thrown for 631 yards and five touchdowns. Seem like Joe Cool is back and healthy. However, his receivers aren't. Right now Ja'marr Chase and Tee Higgins could both be out. That could affect him so it's a wait and see until Sunday.

Burrow faces the Texans who are ranked 21st in aFPA to quarterbacks. We are gonna ride the red-hot quarterback unless both those receivers are out.

If everyone plays, we like Burrow as one of the top fantasy quarterbacks for Week 10. The matchup is favorable and his play has been outstanding and productive.

CIN QB Joe Burrow - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 vs. Buffalo Bills
It looks like Joe Burrow is back. Over the last three weeks, he has averaged 261 yards and has thrown 8 touchdown passes. He has limited the turnovers to two interceptions over that stretch. The calf seems to be getting better and that has coincided with his better play.

Burrow faces the Bills who are ranked 7th in aFPA to quarterbacks. Last season, he threw for 242 yards and two touchdowns against Buffalo in the playoffs. It is not an easy matchup for him this week, but he has found ways to get it done with the injury.

Start Burrow as a top-five fantasy quarterback for Week 9. He usually comes up big in big games and this is a huge game for the Bengals.

CIN QB Joe Burrow - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 at San Francisco 49ers
The Bengals offense had been playing much better the last two games before the bye week including Joe Burrow. Although the numbers were still below expectations for the most part, he did throw 5 touchdown passes (and also two interceptions. The week off will help Burrow with his calf issue so we expect Cincy to keep trending upward.

It won't be easy this Sunday as Cincinnati travels to San Francisco to take on the Niners who are ranked 4th in aFPA to quarterbacks. Burrow usually thrives in games against good defenses and that could be the case against the 49ers although the matchup favors the defense.

Start Burrow as a low-end QB1 for Week 8. The Bengals offense still isn't quite there and although that could change with the bye week and more rest, the unfavorable matchupo dampers expectations.
