Scouting report

CIN QB Joe Burrow - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 vs. Seattle Seahawks
Joe Burrow had his best game of the season and is starting to resemble the 'Joe Cool" we are used to. He threw for 317 yards and three touchdowns, both season-highs. A better sign for Bengals fans was his accuracy. He completed 78% of his passes which helped him reach those fantasy numbers.

Burrow will face the Seahawks who are ranked 26th in aFPA to quarterbacks. The Bengals are back home, but will still be without WR Tee Higgins.

Start Burrow as last week was a good start in getting back to form. He rates as a low-end QB1 and might not put numbers like last week, but should be a good fantasy asset for Week 6.

CIN QB Joe Burrow - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at Arizona Cardinals
It was an awful game for Joe Burrow and the Bengals offense. Cincy didn't score a touchdown and Burrow threw for only 165 yards and zero touchdowns. It's hard to comprehend how their offense got so bad so quick, but the Burrow injury has something to do with it. The problem is we don't know when the problems will be solved.

Burrow will face one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL so maybe this is a chance for them to right the ship. His completion rate wasn't bad last week, but the big plays downfield weren't there.

We are taking a wait-and-see approach with Burrow. Even with the favorable matchup, keep him on the bench for Week 5 until we see the old Joe Burrow and those numbers.

CIN QB Joe Burrow - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Tennessee Titans
Joe Burrow looked better, but his fantasy stats remained disappointing last Monday. He threw for a season-high 259 yards, but zero touchdowns and one interception. The calf is still an issue but it appears he will play through it. But this isn't the same Joe Burrow we are used to seeing.

The Titans are up next and have a below-average pass defense. Burrow faced Tennessee in 2022 and threw for 270 yards and a touchdown. The offensive weapons are still there for the Bengals so each week we could see improvement.

Start Burrow as a solid QB1 for Week 4. He is still better than most quarterbacks even if he isn't 100%. Each week, he has looked better and you have to stick with him if he is your starting quarterback.

CIN QB Joe Burrow - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Los Angeles Rams
It's obvious that there is something wrong with Joe Burrow. His completion rate so far in 2023 is 57% which is more than 10% lower than his career average. Cincinnati has to make a decision about how to treat his calf injury. At 0-2, if they sit him and wait until he is closer to 100% healthy, they could be out of the playoff race. If they continue to play him, his numbers will continue to suffer.

Even if Burrow plays Week 3 against the Rams, it's hard to imagine him to improve his numbers until he is healthy. He has 306 yards for the season and two touchdowns. That's usually one solid game for him. Keep Burrow on the bench until we see him perform to the expected standard.

CIN QB Joe Burrow - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Baltimore Ravens
Yikes is the first word that comes to mind after Joe Burrow's 2023 debut. Considering he was a top-five fantasy quarterback coming into the season, he had the worst numbers of anyone in Week 1. He completed 45% of his passes for 82 yards and zero touchdowns. Hard to imagine how that happened with the offensive weapons in Cincy, but we will chalk it up to Burrow still finding his way with the calf injury and a pretty good Browns defense.

It won't get easier this Sunday when the Ravens come to town. Burrow faced them three times last season and never threw for over 215 yards. He threw only three touchdown passes in those three games.

Still hard to be down on the Bengals offense. Burrow should get his numbers back up even with the unfavorable matchup. Rank him a solid QB1 for Week 2 and hope there is some home-cooking for the Burrow to put up more familiar numbers.

CIN QB Joe Burrow - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Cleveland Browns
No doubt Joe Burrow will be one of the premier quarterbacks in the NFL. His track record proves that. But the biggest question mark is his health and the calf that has bothered him all summer. Keep an eye on that situation.

Burrow faces the Browns who have a very good pass rush and have been a thorn in the Bengals' side. He is 1-4 lifetime against Cleveland, but still has had good numbers against them. Last season, he averaged 236 passing yards in the two meetings and threw a combined four touchdown passes and two interceptions.

Start Burrow as a solid QB1 for Week 1. He will be in the lineup every week unless the injury benches him, but this week he is not considered a top-5 fantasy quarterback.

CIN QB Joe Burrow - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Joe Burrow will enter the 2023 season as a top-five fantasy quarterback as he has proven to be one of the top signal-callers in the NFL. He probably is blessed with the best supporting cast around him. Burrow has thrown for over 4,400 yards in each of the past two seasons and the Bengals have continued to invest in his offensive line. He also nearly doubled his previous career-highs in both rushing yards (257) and rushing TDs (5) in 2022, although nobody will mistake him for Josh Allen or Jalen Hurts anytime soon.

Fantasy Downside
The biggest issue going into the 2023 might be the looming contract situation. Like with anybody, it can become a distraction. Burrow also seems to still hold on to the ball too long and although his sacks came down last year, he was still sacked 41 times. Another thing that was negative is that Cincy did not find Burrow a legit target at tight end, as Irv Smith will be average at the position.

2023 Bottom Line
Burrow ranks fourth in fantasy quarterbacks entering this season with an ADP in the late-second or early-third round. We really like the weapons around him as all four of the top playmakers return for Cincinnati. The other thing besides the high production is Burrow ended the season with only five weekly finishes outside the top 12. That consistency is important when you draft a QB that high.
