Scouting report

HOU RB Jonathan Grimes - 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
While Lamar Miller was signed to handle a true featured role and Alfred Blue is the clear-cut backup, Grimes has proven to be very effective in a limited role in Houston. Despite being limited to 56 carries last year, he still racked up a solid rushing 282 yards -- putting him at a solid 5.0 yards per carry. In addition, he's a capable receiver as demonstrated by his 26-catch, 173-yard, one-touchdown receiving line in 2015. Grimes was also had some runs taking the snap directly from center a last year, suggesting a versatility that HC Bill O'Brien is willing to exploit on occasion. In addition, Grimes has only one fumble on his 158 career touches.

Fantasy Downside
The question this year, especially with the addition of rookie Tyler Irvin, is one of opportunity. Will he see enough action to satisfy fantasy owners? That seems unlikely.

2016 Bottom Line
While redraft owners won't be in a hurry to land Grimes, the above-mentioned versatility is interesting if there are injuries to either Miller or Blue (or both).

HOU RB Jonathan Grimes - Week 18, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 18 vs. Kansas City
While he only touched the ball eight times last week versus the Jaguars, Jonathan Grimes came up big – with a rushing and receiving score. He finished with 54 total yards in the division-clinching finale. Alfred Blue will be the Texans featured RB heading into the playoffs, limiting Jonathan’s touches. In the loss to the Chiefs in September, Grimes ran for 28 yards on six carries.

HOU RB Jonathan Grimes - Week 17, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Jacksonville
With Alfred Blue and Chris Polk receiving 26 rushing attempts last week in the win over the Titans, Jonathan Grimes finished with just six carries for 25 yards. Grimes missed the first contest against Jacksonville in Week 6 and should not be in your lineup on Sunday.

HOU RB Jonathan Grimes - Week 16, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Tennessee
In the win at Indianapolis last week Jonathan Grimes had just a one-yard rush. Alfred Blue returned from a sore back and received 20 carries. Grime caught two passes for 12 yards against the Titans in November and should definitely not be started in the rematch.

HOU RB Jonathan Grimes - Week 15, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Indianapolis
Even though Alfred Blue was active last week in the loss to the Patriots, he didn’t receive any snaps. Jonathan Grimes led the Texans ground game with 53 yards on seven carries and he also caught two passes for nine yards. Chris Polk, however, had a team-high 13 touches for 48 yards. With Blue expected back on the field in Indianapolis, none of the RBs are a good fantasy option.

HOU RB Jonathan Grimes - Week 14, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs. New England
With Alfred Blue receiving only four carries against the Bills last week, Jonathan Grimes finished with seven touches for 43 yards. Chris Polk was the main beneficiary of Alfred’s limited action, totaling 72 yards and a TD. Blue will likely return to the starting RB position this week, but all three of the backs will be in the mix. There has to be a better option for you than Grimes.

HOU RB Jonathan Grimes - Week 13, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 at Buffalo
In the win over New Orleans last week, Jonathan Grimes finished with 25 yards on seven carries. He also caught an eight-yard pass, but will continue to battle Alfred Blue and Chris Polk for touches. Blue has asserted himself as the top Houston RB, relegating Grimes to a backup role. He should not be started on Sunday.
