MIA TE Jonnu Smith - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. San Francisco 49ers

I. continue to be as surprised as you, dear reader, that Jonnu Smith is a top-5 tight end in 2024. We're almost to 2025 and this is still the case. Wild times. Smith should benefit from no Jaylen Waddle this week and the return of the Dolphins' top two tackles, potentially.

The 49ers are no slouch against tight ends as they rank 6th aFPA against the position. Even though it is a difficult spot he's essentially the second or third target in the passing game and should be in your lineups. He's the TE4 on the week and easy start.

MIA TE Jonnu Smith - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Houston Texans

Things were looking bleak last week for Jonnu Smith fantasy managers before the Dolphins and Jets went to overtime. Smith had all three of his catches for 44 yards and a touchdown in OT.

On tap is a neutral matchup against the Texans who rank 16th aFPA against tight ends this season. Given the state of the Dolphins' offense and how concentrated everything has been, Smith remains a TE1 this week. Checking in at TE4 overall, he's an easy start this week.

MIA TE Jonnu Smith - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs New York Jets

There's a case to be made that Jonnu Smith is in the conversation for TE1 overall every week. I won't be making it, but it I've seen it made and I'm not exactly against it. Smith had 11 targets for 10 catches and 113 scoreless yards last week. As long as he continues one of the top three options in this Dolphins passing game he's for sure a TE1 and likely in the top half of the TE1's.

The Jets are 7th aFPA against tight ends so it's not exactly the best matchup, but you aren't benching Jonnu Smith with the heater he is on right now. You start him every week and don't think twice (for now).

MIA TE Jonnu Smith - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 at Green Bay Packers

We continue to see Jonnu Smith improve week after week and he has the highest target share of the Dolphins pass-catchers since Tua Tagovailoa has returned. On this Thanksgiving 3-game slate for DFS, Smith is the clear top tight end and is a solid bet for season-long as well.

While the quarterback and receiver matchups are tough against the Packers, the tight-end matchup is the one to attack. The Packers are 25th aFPA against tight ends this season. This all adds up to Smith being a locked-in TE1 moving forward. He's almost a top-half TE1 this week even with everyone playing. A must-start.

MIA TE Jonnu Smith - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 vs. New England Patriots

The emergence of Jonnu Smith has been coming. We saw Mike McDaniel talk him up in the summer and while it certainly sounded like bluster at the time, it is not now. He's been the TE8 in points per game since Tua Tagovailoa returned.

The Patriots are 21st aFPA against tight ends so it is another solid matchup for Smith. Given the bye weeks and the state as a whole of tight end, he's an easy TE1 this week and you're starting him unless you have one of the top four.

MIA TE Jonnu Smith - Week 11 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 vs. Las Vegas Raiders

It might be time to welcome Jonnu Smith to the TE1 conversation every week. Maybe last week won't convince you after he went 3-45-0 on 4 targets, but he was tied with Tyreek Hill in targets and now gets the Raiders this week.

Las Vegas is 24th aFPA against tight ends, but have been crushed by tight ends the last two weeks. Travis Kelce (TE4) and Mike Gesicki (TE1) both went off against the Raiders and as Smith's role has expanded, he could be in line for a really good day. He's a borderline TE1 this week and is a must in TE premium leagues.

MIA TE Jonnu Smith - Week 10 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 at Los Angeles Rams

It turns out, Mike McDaniel wasn't kidding about his comments in the preseason about excitement for Jonnu Smith. Even with both receivers healthy and Tua Tagovailoa back, Smith was second in targets last week (6) behind only De'Von Achane (8). His role looks solid right now as a lot of the underneath work is going to him instead of Jaylen Waddle. Does it continue that way? We'll see.

The matchup against the Rams is a great one as they are 23rd aFPA against tight ends this season. Smith's role seems secure, for now, and the positive matchup and the role signal a TE1 this week. He's towards the back end of TE1's, but he's startable in all formats.
