TEN TE Jonnu Smith - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Jacksonville Jaguars
In the last-minute win at Denver Monday night, on seven targets, Jonnu Smith collected four grabs for 36 yards and a score. The Titans ran 77 offensive snaps, with 43 of those passes from Ryan Tannehill. At home on Sunday expect Tennessee to feature the legs of Derrick Henry, which could hinder Smith’s activity. Therefore, he’s a borderline TE1 option.

TEN TE Jonnu Smith - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 – Jonnu Smith at Denver Broncos
Taking over for the injured Delanie Walker last season, Jonnu Smith registered 35 receptions for over 400 yards and three TDs. The Titans offense starts with Derrick Henry and Ryan Tannehill is a bit limited in his receiving options, outside of A.J. Brown. Smith could very well finish second on the team in catches, but he makes for a TE2 play in the Monday night opener.

TEN TE Jonnu Smith - 2020 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
After two relatively quiet pro seasons, Jonnu Smith received more action in ’19 thanks to an injury to Delanie Walker. He made the most of his playing time, snagging 35 passes for 439 yards and three TDs. Last year’s stats nearly doubled what Smith had produced over his first two in the NFL. He caught 35 of his 44 targets (80%) and on five occasions recorded at least 50 yards. Smith had an impressive three-game stretch from Weeks 14-16, registering 11 receptions, 209 total yards and two scores.

Fantasy Downside
With Derrick Henry, the Titans are a grind-it-out, control the clock team, which will limit Smith’s opportunities. He caught more than three passes in a game only three times and was held to one or zero grabs on six occasions.

Bottom Line
Smith and Walker combined for 56 receptions last season, so the TE position is an important part of the Tennessee offense. When the regular season begins Smith is a fantasy TE2, but if the Titans find themselves behind in games and Ryan Tannehill is forced to throw more than expected, his numbers can creep into the low TE1 category. Outside of A.J. Brown, none of the other Tennessee pass catchers have been too impressive, so Smith could become Tannehill’s No. 2 option for targets.

TEN TE Jonnu Smith - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Houston Texans
Jonnu Smith had his second consecutive game with more than 60 receiving yards, which in today's tight end world makes him a low-end TE1. Last week, he got four targets, catching three for 63 yards and a score, Two weeks ago, he had 117 total yards in a matchup against the Texans. Given the state of tight ends, he's worth a dart throw as a cheaper option, especially with some of the other Titans' pass catchers banged up.

TEN TE Jonnu Smith - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. New Orleans Saints
Jonnu Smith caught all five of his targets for 60 yards last week, also gaining 57 yards on a run to give him 117 total yards. Despite that, Smith is a TE2 play this week against the Saints, who have allowed just four touchdowns to the tight end position this season. His five targets last week were his most since Week 10.

TEN TE Jonnu Smith - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Houston Texans
Jonnu Smith caught three of his four targets last week for 29 yards and a touchdown. The Texans have had a tough go of it with opposing tight ends this season, ranking 28th in tight end scoring. Smith is a sneaky start as a low-end TE1. He could get some action if this game turns into a shootout.

TEN TE Jonnu Smith - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Oakland Raiders
The good news? Jonnu Smith got two targets and caught them both after not being targeted at all the previous week despite playing 50 snaps. The bad? He had no yards on his two receptions. Ouch. But the Raiders are the third-worst tight end defense in the league, giving you some hope with Smith. Is hope enough? Perhaps not with no teams on a bye this week. Starting Smith would simply be a dart throw.
