Fantasy Upside
After two relatively quiet pro seasons, Jonnu Smith received more action in ’19 thanks to an injury to Delanie Walker. He made the most of his playing time, snagging 35 passes for 439 yards and three TDs. Last year’s stats nearly doubled what Smith had produced over his first two in the NFL. He caught 35 of his 44 targets (80%) and on five occasions recorded at least 50 yards. Smith had an impressive three-game stretch from Weeks 14-16, registering 11 receptions, 209 total yards and two scores.
Fantasy Downside
With Derrick Henry, the Titans are a grind-it-out, control the clock team, which will limit Smith’s opportunities. He caught more than three passes in a game only three times and was held to one or zero grabs on six occasions.
Bottom Line
Smith and Walker combined for 56 receptions last season, so the TE position is an important part of the Tennessee offense. When the regular season begins Smith is a fantasy TE2, but if the Titans find themselves behind in games and Ryan Tannehill is forced to throw more than expected, his numbers can creep into the low TE1 category. Outside of A.J. Brown, none of the other Tennessee pass catchers have been too impressive, so Smith could become Tannehill’s No. 2 option for targets.
