Saints expected to part with QB Luke McCown

The New Orleans Saints' addition of Chase Daniel last week means a changing of the guard at the backup quarterback position.

The team plans to release veteran quarterback Luke McCown, the backup the past four seasons, on Wednesday, according to a source with knowledge of the decision.

Fantasy Impact: 

McCown, 35, initially joined the Saints in 2013. He re-signed on a two-year, $3 million contract during the 2016 offseason, but with the team adding Daniel to the roster, McCown won't have the chance to play on the final year of his deal.

The Saints are adding veteran quarterback Matt Flynn to their roster, per multiple reports Monday night.

Flynn spent time in training camp with the Patriots and Jets. He started four games for the Packers in 2013 and played in seven games last season. He’s also spent time with the Raiders and Seahawks.

Flynn, 30, was a seventh-round pick of the Packers in 2008.

Veteran backup Luke McCown had a season-ending back injury, which forced the Saints to add a quarterback.

Saints QB Drew Brees (right shoulder, out) missed practice Friday after taking limited reps Thursday and is out for Week 3. Luke McCown will get the start in a bad matchup against the Panthers. The Carolina defense is the biggest beneficiary of this news, as the entire Saints offense is likely to take a step back without Brees under center. Even Mark Ingram is looking like a dicey play now that the Panthers can load up and stop the run.

Bill Belichick saw New Orleans Saints receiver Brandin Cooks all week in joint practices and during Saturday night’s game in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

And he saw enough.

“I’m glad we don’t have to play him twice a year,” the New England Patriots coach said after Cooks caught four passes for 117 yards – including a 45-yard touchdown – while the Saints jumped to a 21-0 lead Saturday. “He’s a really good player.”

Cooks also caught a 36-yard pass from backup quarterback Luke McCown. And he ran for seven yards on an end around before calling it a night before halftime.

Fantasy Impact: 

Sure, it was only a preseason game. But the way Cooks has delivered so far this summer for the Saints, with touchdowns in each of their two games so far, is critical. They're counting on the 21-year-old second-year pro to emerge as their top playmaker this season after trading away Jimmy Graham and Kenny Stills. Cooks is clearly part of the Saints transition to youth at the WR position.
