Back in 2009 and 2010 with the Dallas Cowboys, Miles Austin was quite a fantasy player. In 2009, he caught 81 passes for 1,320 yards and 11 touchdowns. He hauled in 69 passes for 1,041 yards in 2010, a fine total given Dallas quarterback Tony Romo only played in six games. Since those glorious years, injuries have plagued Austin and caused his fantasy stock to plunge. His real-life stock also took a hit, to the point where the Cowboys waived him earlier this year. The desperate Browns signed him, hoping he can make a comeback in Cleveland. Will a fresh start bring back the Miles of old?
Fantasy Upside
Austin has a great opportunity with his new team. Cleveland’s top receiver from last year, Josh Gordon, was suspended for the season. New Browns general manager Ray Farmer, continuing a long-established tradition of front office incompetency, knew Gordon was going to be suspended but decided not to take Sammy Watkins, Mike Evans, Kelvin Benjamin, Marqise Lee or any other rookie who would have made an impact. Because of that, Austin heads into the season as Cleveland’s de facto number one wide receiver.
Fantasy Downside
The main receiving weapon for the Browns will be tight end Jordan Cameron, not Austin. Additionally, slot receiver Andrew Hawkins will steal plenty of targets. That is a big issue, since there won’t be many targets to go around in Cleveland’s ball-control attack. Once Johnny Manziel takes over as Cleveland’s starting quarterback, many plays that start out as passes will turn into runs given his freelance style and solid scrambling ability. And of course, will Miles ever be able to stay healthy?
Bottom Line
With his distant history of success, Austin merits a late-round flyer. However, it would not be shocking to see Austin drafted and then eventually waived once bye weeks begin and owners need to find a fill-in kicker or help at other positions. Whatever comeback potential he possesses is likely going to be wasted on a bad team.
