Scouting report

CLE WR Miles Austin - Week 6, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 – Miles Austin vs. Pittsburgh Steelers
After scoring two touchdowns in his first three games with the Browns, Miles Austin cooled off last weekend, failing to find the end zone while catching two passes for 54 yards. Austin did not play well in an earlier meeting with the Steelers, finishing with two receptions for 20 yards. In Cleveland’s variety show offense, Austin always has a chance to finish with a decent stat line, but inconsistency makes him nothing more than an emergency option.

CLE WR Miles Austin - Week 5, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 – Miles Austin at Tennessee Titans
Miles Austin has not provided flashbacks to his Dallas glory days during his first three games with the Browns, but has been more productive than anticipated. Austin picked up some additional targets with Jordan Cameron ailing or out and caught two touchdown passes. Nevertheless, if you dig deeper, Austin is averaging just 38.3 yards per game. You can’t depend on Austin continuing to find the end zone on a regular basis, especially with Cameron seemingly in better health at the moment. Unless you have a dire emergency with your roster, Austin should not be an option.

CLE WR Miles Austin - Week 3, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 – Miles Austin vs. Baltimore Ravens
Miles Austin, like the rest of the Browns, exceeded expectations last Sunday as Cleveland pulled off an upset over New Orleans. Austin caught six passes for 44 yards and a touchdown. Still, you do not need to go racing to the waiver wire to add Austin to your roster. Cleveland’s offense is based around ball control and none of their wide receivers have much in the way of upside. We suspect Austin will not be as productive against Baltimore.

CLE WR Miles Austin - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 – Miles Austin vs. New Orleans Saints
In his Cleveland debut, Miles Austin caught two passes for 20 yards as Cleveland’s comeback fell short in Pittsburgh. It was thought by some that Austin, who had substantial success at times during his tenure in Dallas before being haunted by injuries, would be able to emerge as Cleveland’s best wide receiver. Instead, Andrew Hawkins outpaced Austin by a wide margin on opening day. Barring Austin suddenly proving he is not past his prime and a change in philosophy by the run-oriented Browns, it would be hard to justify giving him a roster spot.

CLE WR Austin Miles - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 – Miles Austin at Pittsburgh Steelers

Remember the classic Rodney Dangerfield movie “Back to School?” Filled with funny lines, there is one point where Dangerfield, as Thornton Melon, said he was looking for the fountain of middle age. So is Miles Austin.

Oh sure, Miles is only 30, which represents the middle ground for a lot of good players, but with his run of injuries in recent seasons, a case could be made he is already ancient in football terms. He will try to find that fountain and good health in Cleveland. If he can, he will help the desperate Browns, but helping your fantasy team is a different story. The Browns may have an unstable quarterback situation throughout the season and will be all about ball-control and pounding the ball with Ben Tate. If you opted for Austin as a late-round gamble, give him some time to see if he can make an impact, but don’t start him against the Steelers.

CLE WR Miles Austin - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Back in 2009 and 2010 with the Dallas Cowboys, Miles Austin was quite a fantasy player. In 2009, he caught 81 passes for 1,320 yards and 11 touchdowns. He hauled in 69 passes for 1,041 yards in 2010, a fine total given Dallas quarterback Tony Romo only played in six games. Since those glorious years, injuries have plagued Austin and caused his fantasy stock to plunge. His real-life stock also took a hit, to the point where the Cowboys waived him earlier this year. The desperate Browns signed him, hoping he can make a comeback in Cleveland. Will a fresh start bring back the Miles of old?

Fantasy Upside
Austin has a great opportunity with his new team. Cleveland’s top receiver from last year, Josh Gordon, was suspended for the season. New Browns general manager Ray Farmer, continuing a long-established tradition of front office incompetency, knew Gordon was going to be suspended but decided not to take Sammy Watkins, Mike Evans, Kelvin Benjamin, Marqise Lee or any other rookie who would have made an impact. Because of that, Austin heads into the season as Cleveland’s de facto number one wide receiver.

Fantasy Downside
The main receiving weapon for the Browns will be tight end Jordan Cameron, not Austin. Additionally, slot receiver Andrew Hawkins will steal plenty of targets. That is a big issue, since there won’t be many targets to go around in Cleveland’s ball-control attack. Once Johnny Manziel takes over as Cleveland’s starting quarterback, many plays that start out as passes will turn into runs given his freelance style and solid scrambling ability. And of course, will Miles ever be able to stay healthy?

Bottom Line
With his distant history of success, Austin merits a late-round flyer. However, it would not be shocking to see Austin drafted and then eventually waived once bye weeks begin and owners need to find a fill-in kicker or help at other positions. Whatever comeback potential he possesses is likely going to be wasted on a bad team.
