Scouting report

IND WR Parris Campbell - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Minnesota Vikings

Parris Campbell had a nice start to the season with 71 yards on six receptions, and he tied with T.Y. Hilton for a team-high nine targets from new quarterback Philip Rivers. It was good to see Campbell healthy and active in the offense, reminding fantasy owners why he was highly touted as a playmaker coming out of Ohio State. If he stays on the field, he should be in for a nice season.

This week, Campbell will try to continue his success against a secondary that got torched for four touchdowns from the Green Bay receiving corps last week. The corners looked out of position on multiple possessions, and that bodes well for Campbell’s prospects if he can duplicate his targets from Week 1. With limited production history though, Campbell remains a boom/bust option, good for low-end WR3 status in deep leagues for now.

IND WR Parris Campbell - 2020 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Parris Campbell had an uneven rookie season last year, but showed some dynamic playmaking ability when given the opportunity. He finished with just 18 catches for 127 yards and a touchdown, but had at least five targets in three of his seven games. Campbell was a dynamo in college and if he can stay on the field, his ability to impact the game from all over the field should give him considerable upside, particularly in quick-strike formats.

Fantasy Downside

Campbell’s rookie season was marred by injuries, including a broken hand, which limited him to just seven games. He’s also at least third on the depth chart after the Colts used a second-round pick on Michael Pittman, a more natural fit as an outside receiver. Campbell may not even beat out Zach Pascal for the slot position. Pascal filled in admirably last season after injuries to Campbell, Hilton and Devin Funchess left the team thin at the position. Campbell has playmaking upside, but he’s still unproven and has a shaky position on the team, making him super risky.

2020 Bottom Line

Campbell isn’t a terrible dart throw in the 18th round of 12-team leagues, but he’s also far from a sure thing. The Colts may emphasize the run or Philip Rivers may laser in on his top-two targets or tight end Jack Doyle. Campbell could struggle to stay healthy again, or he could just wind up buried on the depth chart. In deeper leagues, his upside probably makes him worth rostering, but in leagues with a shallow bench, there should be better options available.

IND WR Parris Campbell - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 at Pittsburgh Steelers

Parris Campbell returned to action last week but saw only 13% of the team’s offensive snaps and failed to record a reception. He was targeted only once on the day. Campbell has talent and speed and a lot of long-term potential, but until he actually produces some consistent fantasy numbers, it’s hard to recommend having him on a roster outside of deep dynasty formats. Campbell should be left on waivers in all redraft leagues.

Update: With T.Y. Hilton out the next three weeks, Campbell becomes an interested desperation option in deep fantasy leagues against the Steelers. If he's anywhere near 100% healthy, he'll get an opportunity to produce. He's still risky, but worth considering, particularly as a roster stash option in case he distinguishes himself this week and earns a larger role.

IND WR Parris Campbell - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs. Houston Texans

Parris Campbell missed his last outing and is still nursing an abdomen injury. He’s doubtful against the Texans this week, and even if he’s active, fantasy owners should stay away. The Colts have other targets to work with and Campbell hasn’t shown enough when he’s healthy to justify risking him when he’s not.

IND WR Parris Campbell - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at Kansas City Chiefs

Parris Campbell caught five passes for only 25 yards last week against the Raiders, but he was targeted eight times – tied with Jack Doyle for the most on the team – and he saw his snaps go from 45% to 63% from Week 3 to Week 4 with T.Y. Hilton out with an injury. With Hilton likely to miss this week as well, Campbell has a chance to shine against a Chiefs team that will keep the Colts throwing. Campbell is too risky to rely on, as he’s one of four Colts receivers with a chance at stepping up, but he’s the biggest playmaker in the receiving corps and is worth consideration as a WR3 option in really deep leagues for owners who are ready for a boom-or-bust week.

IND WR Parris Campbell - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Oakland Raiders

Parris Campbell caught three balls for 24 yards last week against the Falcons, but he saw his snap count rise from 25% in Week 2 to 45% in Week 3. While the other Colts receivers stayed fairly steady in their snap counts with T.Y. Hilton hobbled, Campbell’s shot up. That’s a good sign with Hilton likely missing the upcoming contest against the Raiders, who allow the fourth-most aFPA to wide receivers through three weeks. Campbell is super risky and is not even at the top of the depth chart, but he has some real boom potential in a nice matchup with some additional snaps available to him. If you’re desperate, in a deep league, and need to swing for the fences, Campbell has some all-or-nothing potential.

IND WR Parris Campbell - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Los Angeles Chargers

Parris Campbell will be exciting to watch this year after a productive final season at Ohio State. He caught 79 balls for 992 yards and 11 touchdowns, including 11-71-1 in a Rose Bowl victory over Washington. Campbell begins the season fourth on the depth chart for the Colts, however, making it hard to hold him in most leagues. He should be on every dynasty roster as a developmental option with upside, and his speed makes him an interesting player in best-ball formats, but in most leagues, he’s unlikely to be consistent enough to warrant a roster spot.
