Scouting report

MIA RB Raheem Mostert - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Cincinnati Bengals

Raheem Mostert saw a team-high eight carries last week, but struggled to go forward as he had just 11 yards. He also saw two targets, but failed to record a reception. Mostert and Chase Edmonds have been pretty split when it comes to both touches and playing time this year. The only notable difference is Edmonds gets goal line carries, as evidenced by his two touchdowns in Week 3. Split backfields can work if both backs are productive, but unfortunately this split backfield just makes both players poor options in fantasy. Mostert also doesn't draw a great matchup this week against the Bengals. He should be viewed as a low-end flex play in Week 4.

MIA RB Raheem Mostert - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Buffalo Bills

In Week 1, this looked like Chase Edmonds' backfield, but things changed in Week 2. Raheem Mostert saw a little more playing time (three more offensive snaps) and finished with more offensive touches (14 compared to Edmonds' 6). Mostert was pretty efficient, finishing with 79 scrimmage yards. Unfortunately for fantasy owners, this seems to be a backfield split that makes it so both players end up not doing a whole lot. It's basically a gamble hoping one of them either scores a touchdown or breaks a big run. Both could be hard to come by in Week 3 against a tough Bills defense that's allowed the fifth-fewest fantasy points to running backs through the first two games. Mostert will be a low-end flex option in Week 3.

MIA RB Raheem Mostert - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Baltimore Ravens

Raheem Mostert had a decent role, playing on 42% of the offensive snaps in Week 1. But he wasn't utilized much, seeing just six touches (5 carries, 1 reception) while finishing with 32 scrimmage yards. He only saw one target out of the backfield, which is expected since he's never been much of a receiver. It's only a one game sample size, but so far it doesn't look like Mostert will see enough volume to be a reliable fantasy asset. His speed may allow him to break a few big runs, but on a week-to-week basis he'll mostly finish under 50 scrimmage yards. He's not really on the fantasy radar for Week 2 in a tough matchup vs. the Ravens.

MIA RB Raheem Mostert - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. New England Patriots

It's tough to fully predict what Raheem Mostert's role will be in this offense. We'd expect Chase Edmonds to lead the way as RB1 in Miami. And with Edmonds' receiving abilities, we don't expect Mostert to be a big force in the passing game. Mostert is more of a burner than a bruiser, so he likely won't get short-yardage or goal-line carries. Which leaves his touches to be not that great. We project less than 10 touches for Mostert, which means he'll have to break a big run to really make an impact in fantasy. Mostert can be benched in most fantasy leagues this week.

MIA RB Raheem Mostert - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
Raheem Mostert has shown promise in the past, most notably in 2019 when he finished with 952 scrimmage yards. During that season he averaged a blistering 5.6 yards per carry on 137 attempts, showcasing his top-end speed. Mostert landed in Miami where he told NFL reporter Josina Anderson that HC Mike McDaniel told him his role “will be similar to what it was in San Francisco.” McDaniel worked closely with Mostert as the 49ers’ run game coordinator before taking over as offensive coordinator. With a strong tie-in to the head coach, Mostert has a slight edge over some of his competition in Miami’s backfield.

2022 Fantasy Downside
Mostert joins a crowded backfield in Miami that features Chase Edmonds, Sony Michel and even incumbent back Myles Gaskin. Based on capital given up for each back, we’d expect Edmonds to be the starter while Mostert becomes the primary backup with Michel and Gaskin fighting for scraps. But injuries, training camp, preseason performances and more can shake things up before we get to the season. Speaking of injuries, Mostert has struggled to stay on the field in recent seasons, missing half of 2020 and only playing one game last year. Mostert had a knee cartilage injury that took him out last season, and it sounds like he’s still somewhat recovering from it, although he should be good to go in Week 1.

2022 Bottom Line
Mostert should have a sizable role for Miami, but it might not be enough to make him a reliable option in fantasy. Mostert has never been a strong receiving threat, averaging 0.6 receptions per game and we wouldn’t be surprised if Miami turns to Michel for goal line carries. So that leaves Mostert fighting for rushing attempts. Mostert should be viewed as a handcuff to Edmonds, or a deep bench add. His high-end speed will lead to some big runs throughout the season, but with everyone healthy, he’s likely to be a boom-or-bust type player throughout the season. He’s not a reliable fantasy option, but he is a noteworthy player.

SF RB Raheem Mostert - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Detroit Lions

Raheem Mostert is lightning in a bottle and can score any time he touches the ball. His problem has been staying healthy, but we know he can produce when he’s active. He looks like he’ll start the season on the active roster, so fantasy managers should take advantage of this probably short window of production before he gets hurt again.

Mostert might not need to play a ton of snaps to produce against the Lions this week, who ranked dead last in aFPA to opposing running backs last season. We have him ranked as an RB2 option this week, and he definitely has RB1 upside if he can break a long one – which he’s been prone to do. Start him while you can.

SF RB Raheem Mostert - 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Raheem Mostert remains motivated to prove himself. He quote tweeted a post in April, on his 29th birthday, highlighting his place atop the NFL's career rushing yards per attempt list with a simple message about how his doubters will "wake up eventually." Mostert was one of the many 49ers limited by injuries in 2020, as he played in just eight games. The tailback showed off some impressive quickness when he did play last season, registering the two fastest speeds in the NFL according to the league's Next Gen Stats. Mostert totaled 521 rushing yards and two touchdowns in eight games last year in between stints on injured reserve with a high ankle sprain.

Fantasy Downside
While Tevin Coleman and Jerick McKinnon are no longer in the mix in San Francisco, the 49ers traded up to land Ohio State running back Trey Sermon, adding him to the mix with free-agent addition Wayne Gallman, another rookie in Elijah Mitchell and holdovers Jeff Wilson Jr. (who will miss time after offseason knee surgery) and JaMycal Hasty, Mostert will have ample competition heading into a contract year.

2021 Bottom Line
A healthy Mostert could and should lead this backfield, though it's hard to make any guarantees about production without knowing who looks good in training camp to Kyle Shanahan. The Shanahan clan has a track record of turning supposed no-names into 1,000-yard rushers and post-season heroes. Mostert was one of those not long ago. You'd think San Francisco would need to rely on the running game again this year, whether it's Jimmy Garoppolo or Trey Lance taking snaps. Go ahead and take a chance on Mostert, who will be targeting his last big contract in 2022, meaning he'll be under pressure to both stay healthy and remain productive to keep the primary role.
