Scouting report

SF RB Raheem Mostert - 2020 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Raheem Mostert has spent time with seven teams over his five NFL seasons, but he has only 178 regular-season carries to show for it. This year he expects something different. After an excellent postseason where he compiled 53 rushes for 336 yards and five touchdowns, Mostert has earned the right to be the 49ers' primary ball carrier in 2020. And he was bulking up this offseason in an effort to be ready for the heavier workload. "I'm actually gaining some more muscle," Mostert said. "So I'm able to take those hits and be one of those guys that are getting 200 carries. I've got to get prepared for that." Mostert averaged a ridiculous 5.6 yards per carry behind a strong offensive line, and now projects to be the starter for the San Francisco 49ers in 2020.

Fantasy Downside
Mostert has never been a workhorse back. Not as a pro. Or in college. As Profootballtalk.com noted, in his most productive season at Purdue, he only had 93 carries for 529 yards. And the Niners will still take a hot-hand approach at the position.

2020 Bottom Line
Still, assuming he can fend off challenges from Tevin Coleman and (a possibly-healthy) Jerick McKinnon (Matt Breida was traded to Miami), it appears this will be the year when Mostert can prove his worth as an every-down back. If that's the case, his production last season -- Mostert tied for ninth among RBs in games with 20-plus fantasy points (no other 49ers back had more than one) -- suggests he'll be a viable fantasy asset -- assuming he remains with the team (absent a desired new contract, Mostert requested a trade early in July).

SF RB Raheem Mostert - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Seattle Seahawks

Raheem Mostert only had 11 carries last week, but he scored a touchdown for the fifth straight game and averaged 4.8 yards per carry. Mostert has been pretty steady since taking over as the lead back four games ago and he should continue to get enough of a workload to give him a high floor into the final game of the season.

The Seahawks rank 15th in aFPA to opposing running backs this year, so you can run on them, though they held the 49ers pretty much in check the last time the two teams faced off. That was before Mostert became the lead back, however, so fantasy owners should be optimistic about him this week. Seattle just let Kenyan Drake run all over them, and Mostert should be a solid RB2 option in a pretty good matchup.

SF RB Raheem Mostert - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Los Angeles Rams

Raheem Mostert averaged just 3.9 yards per carry against the Falcons last week, but he touched the ball 15 times and scored his fifth touchdown in four games. Mostert has taken over the lead back role for the 49ers and he’s averaging 16 touches over his past three games. That kind of workload gives him a high floor each week, as long as San Francisco continues to give him the ball.

This week, Mostert faces a Rams defense that has been better against the pass than against the run. They rank 17th in aFPA to opposing running backs and this could be a grind-it-out game between bitter division rivals. We have Mostert as a low-end RB2 option, but he’s a safe and viable starter in most leagues due to his likely workload.

SF RB Raheem Mostert - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Atlanta Falcons

Raheem Mostert has been very good the last two weeks, averaging 7.4 yards on 29 carries and scoring three touchdowns combined. He now has a touchdown in three consecutive games and was on the field for 60% of the team’s offensive snaps last week despite Tevin Coleman and Matt Breida both being active. If the 49ers continue to use Mostert this much, he could be the kind of player that swings fantasy championships.

This week, Mostert will face a Falcons defense that ranks 10th in the league in aFPA to opposing running backs, but if the 49ers can get an early lead and get Mostert double-digit touches for the third consecutive week, he could once again be a solid fantasy option. We have him as a high-end RB2 in most formats, expecting his workload to remain high.

SF RB Raheem Mostert - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at New Orleans Saints

Raheem Mostert had a great game against the Ravens last week, rushing for 146 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. The 49ers rode the hot hand as he was leaned on in a close game. Mostert has shown flashes of ability when given the opportunity, but he’s too often been part of a committee approach in San Francisco. With Matt Breida possibly returning, it further complicates things against a tough New Orleans defense this week. The Saints rank fifth in aFPA to opposing running backs this year, and fantasy owners should take a week off from the San Francisco backfield. They’ll likely continue to feed whoever pops early.

SF RB Raheem Mostert - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 at Baltimore Ravens

Raheem Mostert had a touchdown on Sunday night in a throttling of the Packers, but had only seven touches on the day, including one reception, for a total of 67 yards. Not bad numbers, but certainly nothing to indicate he’s a must-start in any given week, particularly with Matt Breida’s potential return from an ankle injury that kept him out against Green Bay.

If Breida starts, Mostert’s value plummets as he’ll likely be relegated to RB3 status on the team. If Breida sits again, Mostert is still risky against a tough Ravens defense that ranks 18th in aFPA to opposing running backs, but shut down the Rams on Monday night. Fantasy owners should consider Mostert a desperation option at best.

Update: Breida is out, so Mostert has some value, but it's still risky to use him in a tough matchup.

SF RB Raheem Mostert - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 vs. Green Bay Packers

Raheem Mostert had six carries and two receptions last week for 27 total yards from scrimmage against the Cardinals. The 49ers threw the ball effectively and the Cardinals kept the game just close enough to keep San Francisco from a strictly run-heavy approach. With Matt Breida likely to miss another week, Mostert’s touches should improve, giving him some upside in deeper leagues.

The Packers are a nice matchup for him, as they rank 23rd in aFPA to opposing running backs, but he’s a little nicked up and fantasy owners should watch his health status. If he was 100%, it might be worth considering him as a low-end RB3, but most fantasy owners should steer clear this week.
