Scouting report

SF RB Raheem Mostert - Week 11 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 vs. Arizona Cardinals

Raheem Mostert only had seven touches against the Seahawks last week, including one reception, for a total of 35 yards from scrimmage. He’s battling an ankle, as is Matt Breida, so fantasy owners should keep an eye on the injury report. If Mostert is active and Breida is not, Mostert could be in line for double-digit touches against a Cardinals defense that allowed 101 rushing yards on 27 carries to the combination of Breida and Tevin Coleman just two weeks ago. That would be enough to make him a potential low-end RB2 option in deep leagues, but mostly, he’s a quality backup plan for Breida owners.

SF RB Raheem Mostert - Week 10 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 vs. Seattle Seahawks

Raheem Mostert was relegated to third-string last week with Matt Breida and Tevin Coleman both healthy and active. He had only one carry, losing two yards on the day. Mostert should only be considered a handcuff option in case Breida or Coleman are injured, as the 49ers seem committed to a two-back approach to their offense. Otherwise, he should be left on waivers.

SF RB Raheem Mostert - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 at Arizona Cardinals

Raheem Mostert stepped in for the injured Matt Breida last week and gained 60 yards and a touchdown on nine carries in a blowout victory over the Panthers. Mostert’s value is directly tied to his health and the health of the other running backs in San Francisco. Tevin Coleman is going to get the bulk of the carries, but if Mostert’s knee is okay – he’s questionable – and Breida is out on Thursday night, he could have a sneaky good day against the Cardinals. Monitor his status and that of Breida and Jeff Wilson, who’s also nicked up. If he’s the only healthy back available to spell Coleman in what could be another blowout, he’ll have some deep-league value.

Update: With Breida cative, Mostert should be avoided in most leagues.

SF RB Raheem Mostert - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 at Washington Redskins

Raheem Mostert’s snaps dropped all the way to 9% last week against the Rams as Tevin Coleman was on the field more than half the time and Matt Breida still got his. Three is too many when it comes to running backs, and Mostert is unlikely to put up any kind of consistent fantasy numbers while the other two are active and healthy. Even in what should be a good matchup against Washington this week, Mostert is a longshot to put up fantasy production. He should be on waivers in most leagues.

SF RB Raheem Mostert - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at Los Angeles Rams

Raheem Mostert was on the field nearly as much as Tevin Coleman was on Monday night against the Browns, but he touched the ball seven times compared to 16 for Coleman and 14 for Matt Breida. Also, five of those seven carries were during the last three drives for the 49ers, well after the game was already in hand. While Mostert has value as a complementary back and as injury-insurance if Breida or Coleman were to go down again, it’s unlikely he produces as the third-wheel. Fantasy owners should look elsewhere this week.

SF RB Raheem Mostert - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Cleveland Browns

Raheem Mostert has been productive in a supplemental role, gaining 230 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown over his past two games combined. If Tevin Coleman returns, Mostert is unlikely to continue to get consistent touches, limiting his fantasy value. However, if Coleman is out again, Mostert should be in for another dozen or so touches, which should be good enough for fantasy backup numbers in most leagues.

This week, Mostert faces a Browns defense that ranks 12th in aFPA to opposing running backs through four games this year. Mostert would have more value if Jeff Wilson wasn’t out there stealing touchdowns, but he should still have enough touches to be a viable low-end RB3 option in most leagues.

SF RB Raheem Mostert - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

Raheem Mostert had a great game last week, rushing for 83 yards on 13 carries and adding another 68 yards and a touchdown on three receptions. Mostert has slid into the complementary role with Tevin Coleman injured, splitting touches with Matt Breida. He’s averaging 5.6 yards per carry in the process, giving him upside for a role even when Coleman returns. He’s risky to bank on long-term, but should provide some short-term value at least while Coleman is out.

This week, Mostert faces a Steelers defense that ranks 23rd in fantasy points allowed to opposing running backs through two weeks, and just lost their starting quarterback. If the 49ers can keep the game close, or even get an early lead, Mostert should get another chance at 16 touches. If so, he has RB2 upside. He’s a little risky because Breida will be the first option in the San Francisco backfield, but fantasy owners thin at running back might consider swinging on him. We have him ranked as a low-end RB3 with upside.
