Scouting report

CAR WR Robbie Anderson - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Arizona Cardinals

Robbie Anderson caught one of four targets for 14 yards last week. He hasn’t done much since his solid Week 1, and with the Panthers’ offense struggling to throw the ball with any kind of consistency, it’s hard to trust any of their receiving weapons. Sit Anderson in all leagues.

CAR WR Robbie Anderson - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. New Orleans Saints

Robbie Anderson came back to earth after a nice Week 1 that was aided by a 75-yard touchdown. He finished with three catches on five targets for 32 yards in a forgettable loss to the Giants. The Panthers are reeling, Baker Mayfield doesn’t look comfortable in the offense yet, and now they face a tough Saints defense. Sit Anderson until further notice.

CAR WR Robbie Anderson - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at New York Giants

Robbie Anderson had a great Week 1, leading the team in all the major receiving categories with five catches on eight targets for 102 yards, including a 72-yard touchdown. Anderson was pretty good in 2020, so a return to form after a strange 2021 wouldn’t be out of the question.

This week, Anderson has a decent matchup against the Giants. New York gave up 66 yards on six receptions to rookie Kyle Philips last week and the early rapport with Baker Mayfield is encouraging. He’s risky after such a rough season a year ago, but if you’re struggling with a Keenan Allen injury, Anderson may be worth consideration as a streaming option in very deep leagues.

CAR WR Robbie Anderson - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
After a breakout first season in Carolina in 2020, Anderson struggled to get quality targets and ended up with just 519 yards last year. However, Anderson was still targeted 110 times and led the team with five receiving touchdowns. Anderson has always had speed, but he’s worked intermediate and shorter routes with more frequency since arriving in Carolina. That bodes well for his potential with new quarterback Baker Mayfield, who throws nice quick-slants and can buy additional time in the pocket to open up deeper routes. Anderson should benefit from an improved Carolina offense and almost can’t be less efficient than he was a year ago.

2022 Fantasy Downside
Anderson’s struggles last year make him hard to trust again, and Baker Mayfield only produced three good fantasy seasons from a wide receiver in three years as the full-time starter. With D.J. Moore already locked into the WR1 role, there may not be enough volume for Anderson to finish with more than a few boom weeks. Additionally, the Panthers drafted Terrace Marshall in the second round last year and it’s possible he pushes Anderson for snaps. He’s also entering his age-29 season, so it’s possible some of the speed that has helped him separate in the past could start to wane a bit.

2022 Bottom Line
Anderson isn’t worth investing a lot of draft capital into, but since he’s going at the end of drafts, it’s worth considering him as the final addition to your wide receiver corps. Anderson’s job seems safe for at least one more year given his hefty price tag – $19 million in dead money if Carolina cuts him according to Over the Cap. At a more expensive cost, I’d say to stay away, but the upside is enough to make him worth drafting as a late-round dart throw.

CAR WR Robby Anderson - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at New Orleans Saints

Robby Anderson had 58 yards on five receptions last week, despite being targeted 10 times. That’s been the story of Anderson’s season – lots of targets with very little production. Expect that trend to continue this week in a tough matchup against the Saints, and leave Anderson on waivers in all league formats as a result.

CAR WR Robby Anderson - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Robby Anderson had another game with heavy targets and minimal production last week, which has become his calling card for 2021. He had eight targets, but caught just three of them for 29 yards. He added 33 yards on the ground, but it was an overall middling day for the veteran. Anderson will continue to be inconsistent – at best – and plagued by poor quarterback play for the remainder of the season. He should stay on waivers in most leagues.

CAR WR Robby Anderson - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Buffalo Bills

Robby Anderson woke up last week, catching seven of 12 balls for 84 yards and a touchdown. Anderson has been disappointing all season, despite 81 targets on the year. With D.J. Moore hobbled by a hamstring, however, there’s a chance Anderson could be more productive for the stretch run.

This week, Anderson faces a Bills defense that ranks second in aFPA to opposing wide receivers. While Anderson could benefit if Moore is out, it’s still risky to trust him in a bad matchup with shaky quarterback play. If Moore is active, Anderson should stay on the bench. If Moore is out, he’s a risky, boom-or-bust WR3 option at best.
