Scouting report

CAR WR Robby Anderson - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Robby Anderson was second on the team with 11 targets last week, but he only gained 46 yards on five receptions on the day. That being said, it’s great to see him rack up targets after struggling so much through the first three games of the season. Keep watching Anderson and hold off starting him until we see these targets in subsequent weeks, but at least he looks rosterable again. We have him outside starting territory this week against a tough Eagles defense that ranks seventh in aFPA to opposing wide receivers.

CAR WR Robby Anderson - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Dallas Cowboys

Robby Anderson has disappeared this season, with just five catches on 11 targets through three games. He had a dismal showing against the Texans last week with one catch and eight yards, and rookie Terrace Marshall has actually out-targeted him so far this season. While there’s still time to turn it around for Robby, and the Cowboys are a nice matchup to do it in, it’s hard to recommend starting him until we see him become a more active part of the offense. Sit him unless you’re desperate.

CAR WR Robby Anderson - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Houston Texans

Robby Anderson had just three catches for 38 yards last week against the Saints. Anderson has caught fewer balls than he did a year ago, which is a little concerning, but he was still targeted six times in Week 2, so fantasy managers shouldn’t be terribly concerned yet.

This week, Anderson faces a Texans defense that gave up double-digit PPR points to all three Jaguars receivers in garbage time in Week 1 but held the Browns’ receiving corps in check last week. If you have another option, it might be a good idea to sit Robby this week. See if we can see his target share increase before trusting him in lineups again. We have ranked outside of starting territory.

CAR WR Robby Anderson - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. New Orleans Saints

Robby Anderson only had three targets and one reception last week against his former team, but that one reception was a 57-yard touchdown. The fact that rookie Terrace Marshall out-targeted Anderson 6-3 is very concerning, but it’s too early to draw huge conclusions after Anderson led the team with 136 targets in 2020.

This week, Anderson faces last year’s 13th-ranked Saints defense in aFPA to opposing wide receivers. The Saints also just completely shut down the Packers’ offense in Week 1, so it’s risky to bank on Anderson producing in this matchup. Fantasy managers should consider him a low-end WR3 option at best, as we have him ranked just inside our top-40 for the week.

CAR WR Robby Anderson - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. New York Jets

Robby Anderson had his first career 1,000-yard season last year, his first in Carolina. While a change in quarterback could be concerning, it’s nice to see him reunited with a familiar face in Sam Darnold, who threw him 11 touchdown passes over two seasons in New York.

Anderson starts the season against his former Jets squad, who ranked 18th in aFPA to opposing wide receivers last season. Anderson has some risk with a new quarterback and potentially more competition for targets – Christian McCaffrey is back in action – but he provides safe WR3 production with WR2 upside for fantasy managers looking for some steady production.

CAR WR Robby Anderson - 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Robby Anderson completely changed the nature of his game last season with the Panthers. He went from being considered mostly a deep threat, to a well-rounded receiver. While that made his average yards per reception plummet from a career 14.8 to just 11.5 last year, it also gave him career-highs in targets, receptions and yardage – 136/95/1,096. Anderson thrived opposite D.J. Moore in Joe Brady’s offense and should continue to be featured heavily this year. Sam Darnold will be the new quarterback, but Anderson’s familiarity with him should help the transition.

Fantasy Downside

Anderson only had three touchdowns last season, his lowest since his rookie year, when he had only 78 targets. The Panthers have really struggled to get touchdowns to their outside receivers the past few years, and we’ll be counting on an erratic and still unproven Darnold to improve on that.

2021 Bottom Line

Anderson is a decent low-end WR2 option in most leagues with a little less upside than some of the other guys drafted around him in the eighth round – DeVonta Smith and Courtland Sutton – but plenty to like. His targets should make him a quality every-week starter and if he slides a round or two in your draft, he’s well worth the cost to shore up the back end of your starting wide receiver corps.

CAR WR Robby Anderson - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. New Orleans Saints

Robby Anderson was held to 39 yards against Washington last week, but he caught seven balls, was targeted 10 times and he found the end zone, turning in a solid all-around PPR fantasy day. Anderson has already eclipsed his career highs in receptions and targets, and has over 1,000 yards receiving for the first time in his career. He’s been a heavily-targeted option in the Carolina passing game and should continue to be featured in the team’s final contest.

The Saints rank seventh in aFPA to opposing wide receivers, and Anderson may struggle against this secondary. However, the Panthers are likely to be playing from behind, which could mean significant targets all around for the Panthers’ trio of receivers. Anderson has been a quality WR2 option through much of the season, and we have him ranked right there again for the final game.
