SF RB Trey Sermon - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Green Bay Packers

Trey Sermon had only one touch before getting a concussion, but it sounds like he's cleared protocol and may be in line to start this week. Fantasy managers should be wary, but if Elijah Mitchell misses the game - he's doubtful - and Sermon is active, he should be considered a borderline RB2 option. Most managers would prefer to skip this backfield entirely, and that's completely understandable. But if Sermon is the last man standing, there could be some points to be had. At least pick him up if you have roster space, just in case he blows up and takes the job.

SF RB Trey Sermon - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Detroit Lions

Trey Sermon looked pretty good in the preseason and seems to be the number two back behind Raheem Mostert – or perhaps even the 1B to Mostert’s 1A. Sermon is hard to trust out of the gate since we don’t really know what the usage is going to be, but Head Coach Kyle Shanahan has had success deploying a 2RB attack in the past, with Tevin Coleman and Devonta Freeman both being fantasy relevant at times in Atlanta.

Should Sermon see some action, he has upside against the league’s worst defense in aFPA to opposing running backs a year ago. The Lions don’t look like they’ll be remarkably better this year, so Sermon could thrive if he gets action. Still, with Mostert active, it’s hard to bank on Sermon’s touches, making him a risky bet for production. Consider him a flex option at best, but a very interesting long-term asset for your fantasy roster.

Fantasy Upside
The 49ers selected Trey Sermon with the 88th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft. San Francisco had to move up to make the pick, trading away two fourth-rounders (Nos. 117 and 121) to the Rams. Sermon is the ideal fit in Kyle Shanahan's offense, which has seen the likes of Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert power the 49ers' rushing attack in their most successful season of 2019. Sermon will benefit from running behind fullback Kyle Juszczyk, and the schematic creativity of Shanahan, who will find plenty of ways to maximize Sermon's talents.

Fantasy Downside
Concerns? The San Jose Mercury News suggests Sermon's 4.57-second 40-yard dash doesn't fit the profile of 49ers' speedsters in recent years under Kyle Shanahan. However, a 4.58-second time in 2005 worked out just fine for Frank Gore, the 49ers' all-time leading rusher. Also, there's a bit of a logjam at running back and the 49ers aren't likely to lean heavily on any one back.

2021 Bottom Line
Sermon should slot in at least as the second running back behind Mostert though. Perhaps he falls in behind Jeff Wilson Jr. (who will not be ready to start the season after a recent meniscus repair) or Wayne Gallman, but given that San Francisco gave up two fourth-round picks to move up to get him, they're expecting big-time contributions right away.
