MIA QB Tua Tagovailoa - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Buffalo Bills

Tua Tagovailoa had a solid debut in Week 1, finishing with 202 yards, two total touchdowns (one passing, one rushing), and an interception. Although he'll once again be without Will Fuller in Week 2 as the wide receiver deals with a personal issue (Fuller was suspended for Week 1). It was a decent game, especially considering it was a tough matchup. He gets another tough matchup in Week 2 against the Bills who gave up just 188 passing yards in Week 1. Tagovailoa had 361 passing yards against the Bills last season, although he threw the ball 58 times in that contest. He also finished with just one score and three interceptions. We expect another modest outing from Tagovailoa in Week 2, placing him around the 20th ranked quarterback for the week.

MIA QB Tua Tagovailoa - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at New England Patriots

Tua Tagovailoa is headed into his sophomore season after a bumpy rookie year. But there's reason to expect improvement, most notably by all the additions Miami brought in this offseason. However, one of the primary additions, Will Fuller, will be sitting out this first game due to a suspension. And Miami will miss him in a tough matchup against the Patriots, who allowed the eighth-fewest passing yards in the league a season ago. Tagovailoa might be better in Year 2, but it's hard to trust him in Week 1 against a tough opponent while also missing one of his top weapons. We have Tagovailoa ranked outside the top 20 quarterbacks in Week 1.

MIA QB Tua Tagovailoa - 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Tua Tagovailoa showed some promise in his rookie season as three of his nine starts saw him finish with 361 yards, 316 yards and 296 yards. He had at least two touchdowns in four of his starts, finishing with a 14-6 TD: turnover ratio. The Dolphins also have a revamped offense that includes offseason acquisitions Will Fuller and rookie Jaylen Waddle. They join an already talented receiving corps that includes DeVante Parker, Preston Williams, Lynn Bowden and Mike Gesicki.

Fantasy Downside
Tagovailoa showed promise as a rookie, but he also had times where he struggled. In three of his starts, he finished below 100 passing yards and in six of his starts, he had one passing touchdown or less. As a result, he only scored more than 18 fantasy points twice. Tagovailoa has a history of injury concerns dating back to his serious injury at Alabama, and even last season when he missed a game due to a thumb injury.

2021 Bottom Line
Tagovailoa carries some risk for 2021, but there are plenty of reasons to like him this season. He dealt with a lot as a rookie including his recovery from a major injury, shortened OTAs, lack of receiver depth and Ryan Fitzpatrick lurking in the background. This year Fitzpatrick is gone, the receiving corps has improved and Tagovailoa has had another year to get better. We like him as a top 15 quarterback this year.

MIA QB Tua Tagovailoa - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Buffalo Bills

Tua Tagovailoa was benched again last week, the second time he's been pulled from a game this season. Tagovailoa wasn't awful, completing 17-of-22 passes with no turnovers, but he wasn't getting the ball downfield as he had just 94 passing yards. It's the third time this season Tagovailoa has finished below 100 passing yards in a start (out of eight starts). Miami is expected to return to Tagovailoa as their starter again, but there's always a risk of him being benched again. It's a critical game for Miami as a win gets them into the playoffs. It's a fairly tough matchup against the Bills, but there's a chance Buffalo rests its starters. With so many question marks surrounding this offense and its quarterbacks, it's probably best to play someone else at QB in Week 17.

MIA QB Tua Tagovailoa - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Las Vegas Raiders

The Dolphins were without a lot of playmakers last week, and it showed in Tua Tagovailoa's stat line. As a passer, he struggled, finishing 145 yards, no touchdowns and an interception. But Tagovailoa was able to use his legs for two rushing scores to finish with a decent game. He gets a decent matchup this week against the Raiders (No. 18 aFPA), who have given up the ninth-most passing yards this season. Tagovailoa may get some weapons back this week (DeVante Parker, Mike Gesicki, Myles Gaskin) so he's in a better position to succeed. He'll be a top 15 QB option in Week 16.

MIA QB Tua Tagovailoa - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. New England Patriots

Tua Tagovailoa surprisingly finished with a career-high 316 yards last week, adding three touchdowns (2 pass, 1 rush). We say surprisingly because it was a tough matchup, and the Dolphins lost three receiving threats in that game (DeVante Parker, Jakeem Grant, Mike Gesicki). Tagovailoa may be without all three this week, however, it will be a full game without them. On top of that, it's a tough matchup against the Patriots (No. 2 aFPA). Tagovailoa will be a poor QB option in Week 15, especially if his weapons will be inactive.

MIA QB Tua Tagovailoa - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs. Kansas City Chiefs

Tua Tagovailoa returned as the starting QB last week, and finished with a career-high 296 passing yards with one touchdown. It was an interesting performance considering Tagovailoa has two starts below 100 passing yards this season. Before last week, the Dolphins' offense was low-production when Tagovailoa started, although it's worth noting the Bengals were a favorable matchup. Tagovailoa gets a much tougher matchup this week against the Chiefs. Kansas City is second in the league in interceptions (14). Considering Tagovailoa's low output so far as Miami's quarterback, he's not a recommended fantasy play in Week 14. He's a bottom-tier quarterback play in our projections.
