PIT TE Pat Freiermuth - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 vs, New York Giants

On the one hand, Pat Freiermuth had two catches go for over 20 yards last week. Unfortunately, they were his only two catches of the week and only had 3 targets. Freiermuth actually saw one fewer target than his backup, Darnell Washington, but his 51 yards outdid Washington's 36.

This isn't the best matchup as the Giants are 6th aFPA against tight ends. The difficult matchup and the increased usage for Washington make Freiermuth tough to put in a starting lineup. He's a mid-end TE2 and best left on the bench or waivers in a standard league. In TE Premium leagues you could probably get away with starting him, but there might be higher-upside options.

PIT TE Pat Freiermuth - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs, New York Jets

Tight end as a whole has been a wasteland for most of this season, but Pat Freiermuth should have the arrow looking up with Russell Wilson taking over for Justin Fields. We're not sure how Wilson fits in this offense, but Freiermuth should be a beneficiary in the red zone as Justin Fields was more likely to pull it down and keep it.

The Jets are tough against tight ends, 9th aFPA, but Freiermuth is a borderline TE1 this week. In reality, he's a mid-end TE2, but the position is so boom or bust that the difference between TE11 and TE17 is so small. I'd be looking elsewhere, but in TE premium leagues I can see the appeal.

PIT TE Pat Freiermuth - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at Las Vegas Raiders

The tight-end position largely continues to be a disaster for fantasy purposes, but there is some hope with Pat Freiermuth. Enter the Raiders. While they are toughest against tight ends, Pat Freiermuth is essentially the second target in the passing game with no one stepping up behind George Pickens.

While this isn't a passing game that can normally support two weapons, the Raiders have been pretty bad. While 11th aFPA against tight ends, it really only takes a couple of catches and a tight end to finish as a top-half tight end on a weekly basis. He's a TE1 on the week, albeit ranking 12th on the week, but a TE1 nonetheless.

PIT TE Pat Freiermuth - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Dallas Cowboys

Pat Freiermuth had his best week of the year against the Colts last week with 5-57-1 on 7 targets. Without Jaylen Warren and Cordarrelle Patterson this week and the receivers outside of George Pickens not really doing anything, Freiermuth seems like he is the second option in the passing game.

Dallas is currently 3rd aFPA against tight ends, but that feels slightly misleading. They haven't really faced an elite tight end, but David Njoku was the leading receiver for Cleveland in Week 1 and who knows what is going on with the Ravens tight ends right now. It's still a difficult matchup, but Freiermuth is still a TE1 this week. That may have more to do with the tight end landscape, but he's still a must-start in 1TE leagues.

PIT TE Pat Freiermuth - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Indianapolis Colts

The Pittsburgh passing attack is going to be tough to trust as long as Justin Fields is under center and Arthur Smith is calling plays. However, given the tight end landscape, Pat Freiermuth remains in the TE1 conversation even after a 4-33-0 week against the Chargers.

With the way things are looking this week at tight end, Freiermuth checks in at TE12 overall and a TE1 which makes him startable. That would move down a place if Sam LaPorta is good to go, but Freiermuth is no worse than a number of tight ends ahead of him in the rankings. It all comes down to who catches a touchdown that week. As the Colts are 29th against tight ends in aFPA, it's maybe not the worst bet!

PIT TE Pat Freiermuth - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs Los Angeles Chargers

After a quiet Week 1, Pat Freiermuth led the Steelers in receiving yards in Week 2. Granted, it was just 39 yards. But that's progress from the 27 yards he had in Week 1. The Steelers offense still remains a low-volume passing attack and that should put a cap on his weekly ceiling.

Even with the cap on his ceiling, we should lower it a bit this week as both the Steelers and Chargers are going to look to control the clock and run the ball. Freiermuth is right outside the TE1 range this week, but like most tight ends would need a touchdown to break into the top 12. He has more appeal in tight-end premium leagues, but in standard leagues can likely remain on the bench.

PIT TE Pat Freiermuth - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Denver Broncos

We got our typical Arthur Smith shenanigans with tight ends right out of the gate so at least now we can be prepared for what's coming the rest of the season with Pat Freiermuth. He led the team in snaps and targets, but both Darnell Washington and MyCole Pruitt (a staple of the Smith offense) saw targets as well.

Denver, in theory, should be a better matchup for tight ends, but which Pittsburgh tight end? Should it be Freiermuth? Absolutely, but we should expect both Washington and Pruitt to continue to mix in. Freiermuth is a borderline TE1, but it definitely feels tough to trust him. I'd stick with starting him in TE premium leagues or 2TE leagues.
