Scouting report

NE QB Mac Jones - Week 11 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 vs. New York Jets

Jones now has two complete games under his belt since his early-season injury. He has yet to crack 200 yards since his return as the Patriots have really become a run-first team. One of those games was against the Jets, where he threw for 194 yards and a touchdown. The Jets are fierce on defense and want this rematch bad, so couple that with the Patriots commitment to the run and Jones is a borderline QB2 coming off the bye.

NE QB Mac Jones - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 vs. Indianapolis Colts

Mac Jones returned to full-time status as the Patriots quarterback, throwing 35 passes against the Jets but only coming up with 194 yards as the Patriots have been establishing the run more of late. Jones has just three touchdown passes versus seven interceptions, with at least one in every game he has started. Even with six teams on a bye, Jones is still hard to trust from a fantasy perspective, though he is facing a Colts pass defense ranked 20th in DVOA.

NE QB Mac Jones - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs. Chicago Bears

Mac Jones is looking like he'll be back this week against the Bears, but he's been average, at best, this season. He threw three interceptions in his last game and the Bears are pretty good against the pass. New England will likely look to establish the run again as Rhamondre Stevenson has been running very well and Damien Harris may also return this week. Jones is a borderline QB2 this week if he plays.

NE QB Mac Jones - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Baltimore Ravens

Another ho-hum average day for Mac Jones, with 252 yards and a touchdown. The offense looked a little better in Week 2 against the Steelers, though they didn't have to worry about T.J. Watt. This week, he faces the Ravens, who look like a good matchup after their collapse last week against the Dolphins. But you can certainly argue Tua Tagovailoa is a much stronger quarterback than Mac Jones. Until we see more from the Patriots offense, Jones continues to roll as a low-end QB2.

NE QB Mac Jones - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Pittsburgh Steelers

Just like last season, Mac Jones was so-so for fantasy purposes, at best. He threw for 213 yards, one touchdown and an interception. The worry was he had some sort of back injury after the game but it turned out to just be back spasms. He'll likely be out there for the Patriots against the Steelers, who will be without T.J. Watt. But Minkah Fitzpatrick will still cause trouble for Jones. Incredibly, the Patriots are favored in this game. Jones will likely continue to be a borderline QB2 at best this week against the Steel Curtain.

NE QB Mac Jones - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Miami Dolphins

Mac Jones was fine for what he was as a rookie in 2021. He held his own but certainly got better as the season wore on. He begins his second season with an interesting matchup against the Dolphins, who boast a really strong defense - especially up front - that can pressure Jones. Jones did record over 250 yards passing and a touchdown in both meetings with Miami last season and we can probably consider that about where we expect Jones for the most part. He's a low-end QB2 and we'll see how he connects with new wide receiver DeVante Parker.

NE QB Mac Jones - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
The New England stage didn’t prove too tough for the 15th overall pick of the 2021 draft, as Mac Jones held his own as a rookie and led the Patriots to the playoffs after a one-year hiatus for the franchise. Head coach Bill Belichick has also been very impressed with the continued development of Jones as he enters his second season. Jones also has a few more weapons in DeVante Parker and rookie Tyquan Thornton to go along with Jakobi Meyers, Hunter Henry, etc.

2022 Fantasy Downside
In the grand scheme of things, Jones was average and at times, invisible (see the Week 13 game at Buffalo). He was arguably the best rookie quarterback in 2021, but the group, as a whole, showed plenty of room for improvement in 2022, to say the least. And like last season, the Patriots may focus their offense on the ground through Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson.

2022 Bottom Line
The New England passing offense is fine, but won’t always scare opposing defenses. Jones is fine as a quarterback, but fine doesn’t equal big fantasy points. He remains a low-end QB2 until further notice.
