Scouting report

PHI WR DeVonta Smith - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at New York Jets
It just wasn't DeVonta Smith's day as he had only one reception for 6 yards. He usually is receiver 1B compared to AJ Brown's 1A, but it was basically Brown and Dallas Goedert's day. We don't expect that to become commonplace, although that was third time this season he was only targeted five times.

Smith faces the Jets who are ranked 2nd in aFPA to wide receivers. It won't be an easy day for the Philly passing game and that will hurt Smith's ranking for Week 6. Start him as a high-end WR3 or Flex on Sunday. He will need more targets to get managers better numbers with an unfavorable matchup.

PHI WR DeVonta Smith - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at Los Angeles Rams
DeVonta Smith had seven receptions for 78 yards, but didn't get into the end zone for the second straight week. He continues to be a main weapon for QB Jalen Hurts even with AJ Brown piling up huge numbers.

Smith has a tough matchup against the Rams who are ranked 8th in aFPA to wide receivers. The Eagles passing game is clicking right now and the receivers are getting opportunities and producing.

Start Smith as a low-end WR1 for Week 5. Even with an unfavorable matchup on the road, he should still put up very good fantasy numbers.

PHI WR DeVonta Smith - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Washington Commanders
After putting up big fantasy numbers two weeks ago, DeVonta Smith came back down to earth with only four receptions for 28 yards. This will happen with the Eagles as Smith will have a big game and AJ Brown won't get much and vice versa which is what happened last Sunday.

Smith faces the Commanders who are ranked 21st in aFPA to wide receivers. He had his best game in 2022 against Washington with eight receptions for 169 yards and a touchdown.

Start Smith as a solid WR1 for Week 4. He can always end up with WR1 numbers, but you are going to get good fantasy numbers most weeks so he is a good play with a favorable matchup.

PHI WR DeVonta Smith - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
DeVonta Smith's receptions fell from seven to four from Week 1 to Week 2. But Week 2 was jackpot for his fantasy managers as he scored a touchdown and had 131 receiving yards. Smith has been explosive and has a chance to overtake AJ Brown as the No. 1 receiver in Philly.

It's a great matchup for the Eagles and Smith, as Tampa is ranked 29th in aFPA to wide receivers. Big plays are definitely what makes him special and that helps with his fantasy numbers.

Start Smith in all leagues and formats as a high-end WR2 for Week 3. We expect more catches and maybe less yardage, but it should be a successful day for the Philadelphia passing game and that will benefit Smith.

PHI WR DeVonta Smith - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Minnesota Vikings
DeVonta Smith had serviceable fantasy numbers for the opener. The targets (10) were there and he caught seven passes. That amounted to only 47 yards, but he did score the only receiving TD for Philly. The Eagles have many weapons but Smith and AJ Brown remain the focus on offense.

Smith will face the Vikings who have a below-average pass defense. Last year, he had seven receptions for 80 yards against Minnesota.

Start Smith as a high-end WR2 for Week 2. If it wasn't for Brown on the other side, he would be a WR1, but that takes away some of the plays Smith could make. If he is your second wide receiver, you have a good one.

PHI WR DeVonta Smith - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at New England Patriots
DeVonta Smith might be the No. 2 receiver in Philadelphia, but you get WR1 numbers from him sometimes. Smith caught 95 passes and eclipsed the 1,000 receiving yard mark last season. He should be a playmaker again in 2023.

The Eagles face the Patriots whose defense was good last season. Smith definitely takes advantage of the attention AJ Brown gets and that should continue.

Start Smith as a high-end WR2 for Week 1 in all leagues and formats. Eagles offense will pick up where they left and that means qualify fantasy points from Smith.

PHI WR DeVonta Smith - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Although he is the No. 2 receiver in Philadelphia behind A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith played more like a 1B last season. He had more targets and receptions than Brown and ended up being a WR1 at times during last season. Smith is very good and can take over a game. He especially excelled down the stretch for the Eagles.

Fantasy Downside
Smith doesn't have much downside as he is young and still can get better. But will Brown continue to be the dominant receiver keeping Smith from his numbers growing?

2023 Bottom Line
Smith is talented and will still be a major factor for the Eagles, but we see his numbers slightly regressing. He still ranks as a high-end WR2 and his ADP is early third round which is worth taking him as your second receiver.
