How would the Colts adjust their offensive personnel with Donte Moncrief out of the lineup?

Well, Sunday, the Colts leaned heavily on their reliable tight ends.

Jack Doyle (6 catches for 65 yards) and Dwayne Allen (3 catches for 35 yards) received ample playing time with the Colts opting to utilize more two tight end looks, versus three receiver sets.

Doyle continues to produce in 2016. The Indy native has caught 13-of-15 (86.7 percent) targets on the year, the top percentage in the NFL for tight ends with at least 11 targets.

“He is a dependable, dependable guy,” Chuck Pagano said of Doyle.

This was something we actually projected leading up to Week 3. WR Phillip Dorsett was/is a guy to pick up at the WR position with Moncrief out, but so is Doyle at TE, who seems like he could benefit the most. Pagano went on to call Doyle a trustworthy guy who finds a way to get open.

Phillip Dorsett is the obvious beneficiary here since he'll serve as the team's WR2 while Moncrief is out. He'll be ranked as a fantasy WR2/WR3, depending on the matchup, so he's a priority add if he's out on the waiver wire. Chester Rogers played 32% of the snaps with Moncrief sidelined in Week 2, so it looks like he's the next man up. But when you add his snaps to Moncrief's (12%), 44% of the snaps does not constitute a full-time player. Instead, look for the Colts to play more two-TE with Dwayne Allen and Jack Doyle, who played 62% of the snaps on Sunday. The Colts may turn back to a three-WR base offense if they think Rogers is ready, but for now we think Doyle gets the next biggest bump after Dorsett. With this timeline, Moncrief is due back sometime around Week 7 to Week 9.

The Dorsett we saw in Colts camp cannot be accused of being one-dimensional. He showed great skill in running clean routes and displayed consistent hands throughout camp.

Wide receivers often make significant jumps from their first to second years. This sure looks likely in Dorsett’s case, and Rob Chudzinski must stand ready to take advantage.

The Colts have made no secret about their desire to switch from a two-TE base offense (with the departure of Coby Fleener) to a three-WR set featuring the speedy Dorsett as the WR3. This means he should be on the field for at least 70% of the snaps, and playing time is a lead indicator of production.

Indianapolis Colts fans have yet another reason to believe breakout campaigns are on the horizon for talented young wide receivers Donte Moncrief and Phillip Dorsett.

Early in training camp, per the Indianapolis Star, it's "unmistakably clear" that Rob Chudzinski is moving away from the two-tight end offense that was a staple under former coordinator Pep Hamilton.

Along with the coordinator change, the organization's recent personnel moves dictate an adjustment. With receiving tight end Coby Fleener out of the picture and 2015 first-round draft pick Dorsett healthy, it behooves Chudzinski to take advantage with a three wide-receiver attack, the story said. It looks like Moncrief will be the team's WR2 with Dorsett's role expanding as the third WR.

The Colts have talent at their skill positions, but they also have depth concerns.

“We have three guys at wide receiver [who] we know about and then we have a bunch of guys [who] have talent, can run, have height, weight and speed and can catch and do all those things, but they have to go do it now,” coach Chuck Pagano said. “Those guys are all going to compete for that spot, and that’s what training camp is all about. We’ve got talent, we’ve got guys that are capable, they are just unproven.”

The Colts have nine receivers on their roster not with the last name T.Y. Hilton, Phillip Dorsett or Donte Moncrief. Brian Tyms and Josh Boyce are the only receivers who have a reception in the NFL. The Colts have routinely kept around five receivers during the regular season.

There's no clear-cut favorite on who Frank Gore's backup is even though the team is high on undrafted free agent Josh Ferguson out of Illinois. Gore had 227 more carries than his next closest teammate last season.

The Colts are just fine with their starting skill spots, but any kind of injury the team will need to sort out who is up next.
