Beset by injuries at the position, the Eagles inked wide receiver Jordan Matthews to a one-year, $700k contract.

Matthews should instantly slot in behind Nelson Agholor as the Eagles' second wide receiver. He will be no higher than third in line for targets, trailing both Agholor and tight end Zach Ertz. There are rumblings Alshon Jeffery could be back for Week 3, which would push Matthews even further down the pecking order. His best case scenario is likely a slot wide receiver role that sees 5-6 targets per game. That doesn't make him terribly fantasy relevant, but if your bench is a black hole or you play in a deeper league, there are worse fliers to be had.

The Patriots are releasing wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell, their 2016 fourth-round pick, reports CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora. The news comes days after the team placed Jordan Matthews on injured reserve and signed veteran Eric Decker to replace him.

In the days leading up to training camp, the Patriots were reportedly trying to trade Mitchell, though nothing materialized. And now, two weeks later, the team will move on, leaving behind a still-crowded depth chart at the position.

After a stellar first two years of his career, injuries have quickly become Matthews' undoing. He appeared to be in line for significant role with New England, but if this injury is really serious, it could end all of that rather quickly. Kenny Britt may end up the last man standing very quickly.

ESPN's Mike Reiss listed Jordan Matthews as a "roster lock" in his Patriots wide receiver preview. Here is Reiss' explanation of the projection:

"Some might view Matthews as an aggressive choice as a lock, but the projection is that the Patriots will ultimately come to value his versatility, smarts and cheap contract, which is why he lands in that category. Furthermore, I don't think it's a stretch to say Edelman's four-game suspension to open the season further increases Matthews' chances of sticking around."

The logic used by Reiss is certainly reasonable. It is worth noting that New England projects to keep five wideouts on their final roster, and one of them is likely to be return specialist Cordarrelle Patterson. Matthews has a great chance to start in two-wide sets while Julian Edelman serves his four-game suspension, and is the No. 66 wide receiver off the board in fantasy drafts right now.

Welcome back, Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski. The two captains haven't been participating in the Patriots' voluntary offseason program, but owner Robert Kraft said he expected them both to be present at mandatory minicamp.
