Skins HC Jay Gruden has been clear he wants to keep the 5-foot-8 Chris Thompson healthy for the entire season. That means he will not overload his star back with carries, and Rob Kelley (who is expected to be active) can certainly step in and help in that role.
"When you’ve got a guy that can do it all, it’s tempting to have him in there a lot. But we’ve also got other backs that give it different dimensions. They’re a little bigger built, can take a pounding on some of the inside runs. So we’re selective with how to use him but we don’t hesitate to put him on the field if we think it’s something he can do," the coach said of Thompson before the Raider game.
This is been the case for years. The Skins just don't want to overuse Thompson despite the early-season success he's had up to this point. Thompson is probably best-used in PPR leagues, and gets a lot of his snaps on third down.
