New York Giants wide receiver Sterling Shepard was placed in the concussion protocol and will miss Thursday night's game against the New England Patriots, according to a source.

The source added that given Shepard's recent history he could be out a while.

Shepard reported symptoms to the Giants medical staff on Monday morning. He was checked for a concussion in the third quarter of Sunday's 28-10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, but cleared and returned to the game.

The Giants didn’t practice today but they need to file an injury report with a Thursday game. Here’s their “projected” practice participation for today.

TE Evan Engram, RB Wayne Gallman, WR Sterling Shepard - did not practice.
RB Sauqon Barkley limited.

It's a short week but Barkley is eyeing a Week 6 return. It would be a tough matchup against the Pats and their defense, but with Gallman possibly not playing because of a concussion, Barkley could jump right into a full workload. Obviously without possibly Engram and Shepard it could be even more of an uphill battle for the G-men.

Wide receiver Sterling Shepard is expected to get out of concussion protocol today, Shurmur said.

Sterling Shepard should be cleared and ready for the Giants Week 3 game against Tampa Bay. He should quickly step back into his Top-3 target role on the team.

Sterling Shepard is still in the concussion protocol but is practicing in a non-contact jersey, which is a good sign for his status to play against Tampa Bay on Sunday and new starter, Daniel Jones, will need his help.

“The NFL and NFLPA have initiated a standard review of concussion protocols after New York Giants receiver Sterling Shepard suffered a concussion last Sunday and was allowed to finish the game, league sources told ESPN on Saturday,” writes ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Schefter reports the NFL and NFLPA are reviewing the protocol after there was a breach of the protocol as Shepard was allowed to remain in the game. Shepard entered the protocol on Monday and is out of Sunday’s game against the Bills.
