Kenny Phillips won't practice this afternoon at the start of Giants training camp. And tomorrow or the next day sound like long shots as well.

At some point, the third-year safety expects to return to the practice field. He's just not saying what point that will be.

"I kind of have an idea, but I’m tired of making predictions," Phillips said with a smile. "So I’m just going to leave it alone."

By that, Phillips meant he's had enough of publicly setting - and missing - dates for his return to practice following microfracture surgery on his knee last September. This spring, he vowed to be back for today's practice - a timetable that was pushed back by the Giants' medical staff after Phillips worked out for them about two weeks ago.

Phillips, who was placed on the physically-unable-to-perform list but can come off at any point during the preseason, claims the trainers "liked what they saw" and that he didn't suffer any setbacks or experience any swelling in his knee. He simply believes the team wants to take a cautious approach to a recovery that has been very delicate already.

It's expected Phillips will attempt to practice in about a week.
