The Washington Redskins spread the ball around Friday night against the Jets; 12 different players caught passes. One name noticeably absent from the stat sheet, though, was third-year receiver Devin Thomas.
In fact, Thomas, thought to have a shot at starting opposite Santana Moss not long ago, didn't even enter the game as a receiver. The only action he saw against the Jets was on special teams.
Coach Mike Shanahan said after the game that keeping Thomas out of the offense was part of his game plan.
"Had to make some decisions today about who we're going to play," Shanahan said. "It's really hard to get receivers in the mix unless you play them, get them running a little bit."
But Shanahan said Thomas will get "a lot" of action next week at Arizona. The fourth preseason game is typically one in which the starters play for only a series or two.
Thomas, currently listed with the third-stringers on the depth chart, apparently has not done nearly enough to convince coaches that he's among the team's top two receivers.
Thomas seemed to be in good spirits after the Jets' game. He said he's looking forward to facing the Cardinals next week. "That's my opportunity to shine," he said.
Santana Moss, Chris Cooley, and Fred Davis are the only Washington pass catchers that belong on fantasy rosters at this point.
