The Training Room: Week 7 Injury Updates
It seems like every week we are all holding our collective breath as more and more teams are having positive COVID tests pop up throughout the week. The ripple effects that COVID is having on fantasy football have been pretty impactful and owners are trying to withstand the issues on a daily basis. Soft tissue injuries continue to be problematic as we head into Week 7 of the NFL season, but the hope is that they will start to come down due to players getting their legs more under them. Week 6 provided a little less big names getting hit with the injury bug so hopefully, your roster will continue to get healthy and allow for better weeks ahead. Updated 10/25/20.
Miles Sanders, RB Eagles
Injury: Sprained Knee
Timetable For Recovery: 2-4 Weeks. Ruled OUT for Thursday night
Potential Replacements: Boston Scott
Initial Thoughts: Sanders wasn't really expecting to play on a short week after hurting his knee on Sunday. We'll know more early next week whether or not Sanders will be able to maintain that 1-2 week recovery timetable that is being projected for him currently.
Zach Ertz, TE Eagles
Injury: High Ankle Sprain
Timetable For Recovery: Placed on IR
Potential Replacement: Richard Rodgers
Initial Thoughts: Ertz sustained a high ankle sprain and is expected to miss at least 4-6 weeks due to the injury. Even with that timetable, high ankle sprains have a tendency to take longer to regain some of that explosiveness and power when performing cutting tasks so hopefully we'll get a better feel as to what to expect as we get further into his recovery timetable.
Joe Mixon, RB Bengals
Injury: Sprained Foot
Timetable For Recovery: Week To Week. Ruled OUT for Week 7
Potential Replacements: Giovani Bernard
Initial Thoughts: Mixon didn't practice all week which is concerning for his availability heading into next week. The hope is the Bengals are getting ahead of it to reduce the likelihood of it being a long term issue.
Aaron Jones, RB Packers
Injury: Strained Calf
Timetable For Recovery: Week To Week. Unlikely To Play Week 7
Potential Replacements: Jamaal Williams, A.J. Dillon
Initial Thoughts: Jones tweaked his calf in practice and now is unlikely to play Week 7 against the Texans. Although there are reports that the Packers still plan on testing out his calf in warm-ups, the Packers staff has always been on the conservative side. Given the injury and the fact that he will not be 100%, Jones remain unlikely to play this weekend. The question now becomes whether or not this is going to sideline him heading into next week.
Jonnu Smith, TE Titans
Injury: Sprained Ankle
Timetable For Recovery: Day To Day. Expected to play Week 7
Potential Replacements: Anthony Firkser
Initial Thoughts: Smith did not have an injury designation heading into the weekend which means he will be ready to suit up against the Steelers in Week 7. It remains to be seen how close to 100% he is, but given that he wasn't on the injury report, I'd expect him to have his normal production in a big game against the undefeated Steelers.
Mark Ingram, RB Ravens
Injury: High Ankle Sprain
Timetable For Recovery: Week To Week
Potential Replacements: Gus Edwards, J.K. Dobbins
Initial Thoughts: Coach Harbaugh stated that he doesn't believe that Ingram's injury is a long-term concern. However, with the high ankle sprain diagnosis, even if it is considered mild, it may impact Ingram's effectiveness if he does play in Week 8 after the Ravens bye. We should get a good idea as to where he is in his recovery progress early next week when practicing designations come out.
Raheem Mostert, RB 49ers
Injury: High Ankle Sprain
Timetable For Recovery: Placed on IR, at least 3 weeks
Potential Replacements: Jerick McKinnon, Jeff Wilson Jr., JaMycal Hasty
Initial Thoughts: Mostert has not been able to stay healthy this year and it's been tough for fantasy owners to get him back just to have him get hurt again. High ankle sprains usually take at least 3-4 weeks to heal, so hopefully he'll be able to recover quickly, but normally they are on the longer end of the recovery timeline than we like.
On The Mend
Michael Thomas, WR Saints
Injury: High Ankle Sprain, Strained Hamstring. Ruled OUT for Week 7
Initial Thoughts: Brutal. There continues to be reports that Thomas is a fast healer, but that really doesn't mean anything considering he's now missed 6 games due to injury. There is no guarantee that he will be available for Week 8, so fantasy owners need to continue to have a contingency plan for Thomas until he's back on the field.
Jamison Crowder, WR Jets
Injury: Strained Groin. Doubtful for Week 7.
Initial Thoughts: Crowder was shaping up to be a game time decision as the week unfolded, but him being downgraded to doubtful is a hit to fantasy owners hoping to have him for Week 7. We'll see if he can ramp things back up next week to be ready Week 8 against the Chiefs.
Marvin Jones, WR Lions
Injury: Sprained Knee. Game time decision for Week 7.
Initial Thoughts: Jones practiced in limited fashion late in the week which indicates that he should be available to play this weekend. Jones has not been on the fantasy radar even when he's been healthy so I would say if you have other options, consider those before inserting him into your lineups.
Curtis Samuel, WR Panthers
Injury: Sprained Knee. Expected to play Week 7.
Initial Thoughts: Samuel missed Week 6 against the Bears but the Panthers seem to be in no rush to get him back in the lineup if he's not ready. Consider him questionable at best.
Noah Fant, TE Broncos
Injury: Sprained Ankle. Expected to play Week 7.
Initial Thoughts: Fant practiced in full late in the week and is ready to return to the field against the Chiefs. With the Chiefs likely to pour it on the Broncos, Fant could be in for a nice game with some garbage time production.
John Brown, WR Bills
Injury: Sprained Knee. Ruled OUT for Week 7.
Initial Thoughts: Brown continues to struggle to get healthy as he's dealt with calf and now knee issues over the past few weeks. Even if he is active this week, I would not play him until he shows that's healthier and able to have some productivity.
Diontae Johnson, WR Steelers
Injury: Strained Low Back. Expected to play Week 7.
Initial Thoughts: Johnson is practicing in full before this week's game against the Titans so he should be ready to return to a jam packed depth chart for the Steelers at wide receiver. It might be hard to figure out target share till after this week so if you have some better options, consider them until this potentially gets sorted out.
Sam Darnold, QB Jets
Injury: Sprained AC Joint. Expected to play Week 7.
Initial Thoughts: Darnold was able to practice in limited fashion throughout the weekand is expected to suit up against the Bills. Jamison Crowder is out this week, and with the Bills defense awaiting Darnold, he is not a recommended option considering the matchup.
Jeff Wilson Jr., RB 49ers
Injury: Strained Calf. Expected to play Week 7.
Initial Thoughts: Wilson was limited in practice throughout the week and although he will have to test things out before the game, he is more likely to play than not. I'd say considering they sat him out last week with the same issue should give him a better chance to suit up, but calf strains can always be troublesome when it comes to recovering from them.
