The Training Room: Week 8 Injury Updates
Somehow through all the craziness of COVID testing, waiting on results, and the frantic nature of handling pandemic, we have made it to the halfway point of the NFL season. Injuries continue to be a common theme throughout this season and at quick glance, it feels like more players are getting injured and then sustaining another injury as they attempt to come back from the initial issue. This week we have a few names who were just on our report last week and are on it again with new issues. Let us help you sort through these issues each and every week to give you the best chance to win! Updated 11/1/20.
Week 8 Training Room Concerns
Odell Beckham, WR Browns
Injury: Torn ACL
Timetable For Recovery: Out for season
Potential Replacements: Jarvis Landry, Rashard Higgins, Taywan Taylor
Initial Thoughts: Beckham will miss the rest of the season and may be limited at the start of next season depending on if there are any other tissue involved that need to be addressed during the recovery. It's a tough blow for the Browns who have been playing well. The Browns will take up the slack with their run game and the rest of their receiving corps moving forward.
Jeff Wilson Jr., RB 49ers
Injury: High Ankle Sprain, placed on IR
Timetable For Recovery: 4-6 Weeks, placed on IR
Potential Replacements: JaMycal Hasty, Tevin Coleman
Initial Thoughts: Wilson was having a huge day scoring three touchdowns. Unfortunately, the third touchdown is what forced him from the game due to the high ankle sprain, as he got rolled up on heading into the endzone. Wilson will miss at least four weeks, if not more, to get the ankle feeling better. The 49ers just can't catch a break as Wilson was just returning back from a calf issue prior to this occurring.
Deebo Samuel, WR 49ers
Injury: Strained Hamstring
Timetable For Recovery: 2-3 Weeks
Potential Replacements: Brandon Aiyuk, Kendrick Bourne, Trent Taylor
Initial Thoughts: Samuel is seen getting hurt in the second half and did not return, given the 49ers were up big against the Patriots. It remains to be seen how significant the issue is, as an MRI will likely be pending to determine how severe the strain is. Consider him week to week for now with the possibility he misses some time.
Dede Westbrook, WR Jaguars
Injury: Torn ACL
Timetable For Recovery: Out For Season
Potential Replacements: Chris Conley, Keelan Cole, Laviska Shenault
Initial Thoughts: Westbrook injured his knee on a kick return and needed to be carted off the field due to the injury. The team feared an ACL tear and the MRI confirmed that diagnosis.
Phillip Lindsay, RB Broncos
Injury: Concussion
Timetable For Recovery: Day To Day. Game Time Decision For Week 8 .
Potential Replacements: Melvin Gordon, Royce Freeman
Initial Thoughts: Lindsay was practicing in full on Saturday, he just needs clearance to be able to suit up for Week 8. All signs point to Lindsay being available to play Week 8 so have him in your lineup if you have him.
Breshad Perriman, WR Jets
Injury: Concussion
Timetable For Recovery: Week To Week. Ruled OUT for Week 8.
Potential Replacements: Denzel Mims, Jeff Smith
Initial Thoughts: Perriman, who had just been coming back from an ankle issue, has been ruled out for Week 8 as he has not been able to recover from the concussion he sustained in Week 7 against the Bills.
Kenyan Drake, RB Cardinals
Injury: High Ankle Sprain
Timetable For Recovery: 4-6 Weeks
Potential Replacements: Chase Edmonds, Eno Benjamin
Initial Thoughts: Drake injured his ankle late in the fourth quarter in Sunday night's game against the Seahawks, and had to be helped off the field. He then was carted off to the locker room and has been diagnosed with a ankle ligament tear. High ankle sprains have been highlighted a lot as of late so I would not expect Drake back anytime soon and with the emergence of Chase Edmonds, it'll be interesting to see what shakes out when he does finally return.
Chris Carson, RB Seahawks
Injury: Sprained Midfoot
Timetable For Recovery: Game Time Decision
Potential Replacements: Carlos Hyde, Travis Homer
Initial Thoughts: Carson has progressed well enough where the Seahawks are going to test out his foot before this weekend's game against the 49ers. With the Seahawks struggling for depth at the running back position, there's a chance that Carson suits up, but I'm still not convinced that if he does play he'll be effective.
Devonta Freeman, RB Giants
Injury: Sprained Ankle
TImetable For Recovery: Week To Week. Ruled OUT for Week 8.
Potential Replacements: Wayne Gallman
Initial Thoughts: Freeman did not practice at all this week and is ruled out for Week 8 against the Bucanneers as he's dealing with an ankle injury that he hasn't bee able to tramp up to. We'll see how he's recovery early next week to see if he plays.
Chris Godwin, WR Buccaneers
Injury: Fractured Index Finger
Timetable For Recovery: Ruled OUT for Week 8. Week To Week.
Potential Replacements: Scott Miller, Justin Watson
Initial Thoughts: Godwin injured his finger catching a touchdown last week against the Raiders. Surgery for this type of injury is pretty straight forward and now will be about protecting the tissue to let it heal and figuring out how he can potentially try and catch without potentially aggravating the issue. I think he's got a good chance to play next week, just depends on discomfort that he has from the surgery.
Andy Dalton, QB Cowboys
Injury: Concussion
Timetable For Recovery: Week To Week. Ruled OUT for Week 8.
Potential Replacements: Ben DiNucci
Initial Thoughts: Rookie QB Ben DiNucci will make his start against the Eagles due to Dalton not getting clearance in time. Dalton should be available next week as the Cowboys play the Steelers.
On The Mend
Aaron Jones, RB Packers
Injury: Strained Calf. Ruled OUT For Week 8.
Initial Thoughts: Calf issues are tricky because of the exposure it puts on the achilles tendon. He did not practice all week, so although the Packers are saying this issue is minor, it's beginning to look like Jones' status needs to be more closely monitored as we head into Week 9.
Mark Ingram, RB Ravens
Injury: High Ankle Sprain. Ruled OUT for Week 8.
Initial Thoughts: Ingram did not practice at all this week. Even coming out of a bye, Ingram hasn't gotten healthy enough to even start practicing which is concerning for his short term availability. When Ingram comes back, it'll be interesting to see how the Ravens distribute the carries in the backfield as J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards.
Michael Thomas, WR Saints
Injury: Strained Hamstring
Initial Thoughts: The only silver lining to this headache is that his high ankle sprain should be pretty much close to 100% at this point. Soft tissue injuries can be challenging to overcome, but fantasy owners need to hold out hope that once he does return, he can help teams make a run at the playoffs down the stretch.
MIles Sanders, RB Eagles
Injury: Sprained Knee. Ruled OUT for Week 8.
Initial Thoughts: Sanders has not practiced at all since injuring his knee in Week 6. He'll need to show some progress this upcoming week and get back to individual drills and some practice participation to even be close to returning for Week 9.
Allen Robinson, WR Bears
Injury: Concussion. Expected To Play Week 8.
Initial Thoughts: Robinson missed practice all week but was able to get clearance in order to play Week 8 against the Saints. It was a strange situation as most players will practice in some fashion later in the week to even be considered to play but fantasy owners won't complain about his availability.
Tyler Higbee, TE Rams
Injury: Hand Contusion. Game Time Decision.
Initial Thoughts: Higbee continues to struggle with pain and discomfort in his hand. He'll test out his hand before Sunday's game against the Dolphins, it doesn't sound overly promising that he'll be available.
Joe Mixon, RB Bengals
Injury: Sprained Foot. Ruled OUT Sunday.
Initial Thoughts: The Bengals have a Week 9 bye so just based on that information, it does not look likely that the Bengals would rush Mixon back for one game at less than 100% before the bye. We'll see if he's able to at least practice a bit which would give fantasy owners some hope that he'll be able to get back to 100% after the bye.
Dalvin Cook, RB Vikings
Injury: Strained Groin. Expected To Play Week 8.
Initial Thoughts: Cook practiced in limited fashion during the week and it seems like the bye week helped him get healthy enough to play this weekend against the Packers. Plug Cook back into your lineup with confidence!
Tevin Coleman, RB 49ers
Injury: Sprained Knee. Activated off IR.
Initial thoughts: Coleman was activated off IR which makes the 49ers backfield even more complicated
Dallas Goedert, TE Eagles
Injury: Ankle Fracture. Activated off IR.
Initial Thoughts: Goedert did enough during the week to convince the Eagles to activate him for Sunday's matchup against the Cowboys. Although they might scale back his workload as it is his first game back, the Eagles are hurting for playmakers on the offensive side of the ball. If you have him, then I would start him.
Carlos Hyde, RB Seahawks
Injury: Strained Hamstring. DOUBTFUL for Week 8.
Initial Thoughts: Hyde injured his hamstring last week and althought Coach Carroll said it isn't anything major, this was likely the outcome given the nature of hamstring related issues. He'll be questionable at best heading into Week 9 as the Seahawks will face the Bills.
Cordarrelle Patterson, RB/WR Bears
Injury: Strained Quadricep. Questionable For Week 8.
Initial Thoughts: Patterson hasn't done much in terms of production, but he's the only real option behind David Montgomery in Chicago's backfield. His availability doesn't really impact Montgomery, but for those who have Patterson, I'd say he's unlikely to provide anything more than what he's already provided from a fantasy standpoint.
Austin Hooper, TE Browns
Injury: Appendectomy. Ruled OUT for Week 8.
Initial Thoughts: Hooper is wasn't ready to return to practice as he continues to recover from the appendectomy surgery he had. There's a chance he could be available in Week 9, but it really depends on how much discomfort he's in. The Browns won't force the issue as they'll continue to rely on Harrison Bryant and David Njoku.
