The Steelers released former starting center Justin Hartwig on Saturday after efforts to try to trade him failed.

Hartwig was beaten out by first-round choice Maurkice Pouncey in training camp. He was scheduled to make $2.08 million, which the Steelers considered too much for a backup center. The Steelers also released guard Kraig Urbik, a third-round choice last year who was a backup.
