The Bears signed seven players to the practice squad Sunday, including Northwestern and St. Viator product Brett Basanez. But one spot remains open in case the Bears need to make another roster move.
Basanez, the third-string quarterback during the preseason, could be promoted if the Bears need him in an emergency. Jay Cutler and Caleb Hanie are the only quarterbacks on the 53-man roster.
Leaving one practice squad slot open gives the Bears the flexibility to add another player, such as a veteran running back, to the active roster. They would then have to assign an inexperienced player to the practice squad
