Jets RB Bilal Powell played every down with the first-team offense at running back.
Rex Ryan, the Jets coach, indicated Powell was perhaps the most impressive player on the field.
“He did run the ball hard,” Ryan said. “Now, obviously with the opportunity he’s been given, he’s really taken the reigns.”
Powell rushed for 41 on six carries, including a slicing 24-yard gain on his first attempt. A touchdown run of three yards was called back due to a penalty, though Powell later broke three tackles after catching a screen pass to gain eight yards.
Neither Chris Ivory nor Joe McKnight dressed for the scrimmage, meaning Powell played every down with the first-team offense at running back. Ivory needs to get healthy soon and he should still win the job. But Ryan's statements could be meant as a wake-up call for the oft-injured Ivory.
