CHI QB Justin Fields - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 vs. Washington Commanders

Justin Fields is slowly improving. After not completing more than eight passes through the first three weeks, Fields now has back-to-back games of 11 and 15 completions. He's been fairly steady as a runner, finishing with at least 20 yards on the ground in each game with an average of 38.8. But Fields is struggling to find the end zone with just three total passing touchdowns on the season, and one score on the ground. And his improvements aren't that great as he's averaging 135.8 pass yards per game, which is dead last among starting quarterbacks. He does get a favorable matchup this week against the Commanders, but it's hard to recommend someone with such little production. Fields will be a bottom-tier quarterback in Week 6.

CHI QB Justin Fields - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at Minnesota Vikings

Justin Fields set season highs in completions and passing yards last week. That sounds better than the final result, which is Fields finished with 11 completions for 174 yards. He did add 52 yards on seven attempts, but this Bears passing attack has been historically bad. Cooper Kupp has eight more receptions on the season than Fields has completions (42 to 34). Fields gets an OK matchup this week against the Vikings, but at this point the matchup doesn't really matter. Fields needs a lot more production before he should be considered in fantasy. Not only is he averaging just 117.8 pass yards per game, but he also hasn't thrown a touchdown in three straight games. We'd avoid him in Week 5.

CHI QB Justin Fields - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at New York Giants

Justin Fields is off to a brutal start in 2022. On the season he's 23-of-45 for 297 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions. Those are numbers through three games, but they could honestly be mistaken for a single game performance. Fields has added some extra work as a runner, rushing 27 times for 95 yards and a touchdown. But he needs to be putting up running back numbers to make up for the lack of an air attack. This week he faces a Giants defense that's allowed the 7th-fewest passing yards to quarterbacks this season. Until Fields can complete more than 8 passes in a game (which he hasn't done) then we'd avoid Fields entirely in fantasy.

CHI QB Justin Fields - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Houston Texans

Justin Fields has 28 pass attempts through two games. For context, Cooper Kupp has 29 targets on the season. It's a rough start for Fields, who somehow performed worse in Week 2 even though there was a lot less rain. Fields finished with 70 pass yards and an interception with a touchdown on the ground. Fields' passing struggles were somewhat expected, although this is below anyone's expectations. His only throw of note so far was a busted play that resulted in a 51-yard touchdown. If it wasn't for that, he'd have passed for 140 yards on the season. Fields does draw a favorable matchup vs. the Texans in Week 3, but it's hard to trust Fields given what he's done so far. He's only really relevant in two quarterback or superflex leagues.

CHI QB Justin Fields - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Green Bay Packers

Justin Fields did the best he could in a rainy, sloppy game against a tough 49ers defense. He finished with 121 pass yards, 28 rush yards, two touchdowns and an interception. He got bailed out on a blown coverage 51-yard touchdown pass, which was the majority of his production. It wasn't a pretty game for Fields, but most quarterbacks would struggle in those conditions. Things get better this week against the Packers, a defense that struggled to contain Justin Jefferson in Week 1. The Bears don't have a weapon like JJ, but it just shows this defense is far from lockdown. Fields had some success against Green Bay last season with 14.3 and 20.4 fantasy performances. He will be around QB20 range for Week 2.

CHI QB Justin Fields - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. San Francisco 49ers
Justin Fields doesn't enter the season with the best projections. He plays behind a poor offensive line with limited receiving talent around him. In short, he didn't have a strong rookie campaign (9 TDs to 15 turnovers) and the Bears' offense got worse during the offseason. Although he did have some strong performances in the preseason, that's very different from real game action. To make matters worse, he'll draw a tough 49ers defense in Week 1. He was okay against San Francisco last season, doing most of his damage as a runner with 103 rush yards on 10 attempts. And that's mostly the story with Fields in fantasy: His rushing ability will make him more valuable than some other quarterbacks. But with the amount of great QBs out there, you'll likely want to look elsewhere in Week 1. Fields is around the QB20 range this week.

CHI QB Justin Fields - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
Justin Fields showed promise in the back half of his rookie season with the Bears. He especially displayed his abilities as a runner as the season progressed. In his final seven starts, Fields averaged 7.4 attempts for 51.6 yards per game, which extrapolated over the course of a full season would be 877 rush yards. He also improved as a passer as the season went on, averaging 222 pass yards in his final six games (where he played the full game). The Bears also lost Andy Dalton in the offseason, so there’s no longer a threat of a veteran QB replacing Fields. Next up on the depth chart is Trevor Siemian, who doesn’t pose a real threat to Fields. Fields will be the starter as he enters his sophomore season. A lot of quarterbacks are able to improve as they enter Year 2, and there’s a chance we see better play from Fields in 2022.

2022 Fantasy Downside
The obvious downside to Fields this season is the departure of Allen Robinson, and the lack of supporting cast around him. The Bears have just one WR ranked in our top 80 projections (Darnell Mooney), and even tight end Cole Kmet hasn’t shown much promise with just three games above 50 yards receiving in two years. Even with a better supporting cast a year ago, Fields struggled as a passer, averaging 180 pass yards in his 10 starts with a 7-to-14 TD-to-turnover ratio. The Bears’ offensive line is also a cause of concern, with 4for4’s Justin Edwards ranking them dead last in the league.

2022 Bottom Line
Fields is a talented quarterback, and his rushing ability is a major bonus, but there are some major downsides that make the Bears QB a risky option this season. If Fields was in a different system, he could potentially push being a Top 10 option. But the lack of supporting cast, including a weak WR corps and poor offensive line, are legitimate concerns when it comes to projecting Fields’ production. Fields should be viewed around the QB20 range. He’s not someone you want to rely on every week as a starter, but he could be a streaming option in favorable matchups on a given week.
