49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said QB Nick Mullens will start Sunday against the New York Giants, according to Nick Wagoner of ESPN.

This is not a surprise since Jimmy G is dealing with a high ankle sprain. Mullens is a low-end QB2 on the road in New Jersey.

Remember, George Kittle set the single-season record for receiving yards by a tight end in a season in which Nick Mullens started the last eight games. Those were mostly run-after-catch yards.

Obviously, Kittle (knee) is iffy for Sunday’s game on MetLife Stadium’s bouncy-house field. If he’s not there, I’d imagine Jordan Reed is a frequent target.

Kendrick Bourne and Dante Pettis also had good production when Mullens was under center in 2018. Mullens also threw to Matt Breida out of the backfield quite a bit, which makes Mullens a potentially good pairing with Jerick McKinnon.

Of Bourne’s 487 receiving yards, 296 came when Mullens was the quarterback. Pettis had his best NFL stretch with Mullens throwing to him — 371 of his 467 receiving yards came in the last eight games of 2018, the story said. With RBs Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman likely missing Week 3, McKinnon is potentially a nice play this week at RB.

In the aftermath of the game, coach Kyle Shanahan said the 49ers won't make a decision on Garoppolo's status for next Sunday's game versus the Giants until the end of the week, the story said. As the story also added, high-ankle sprains typically require missed time, so Mullens may be poised for his first start since the 2018 campaign.

A quarterback change could be on the table for the 49ers this week.

“I don’t think [Nick Mullens] played very well, just looking at some of our situations, but that wasn’t all on him,” Shanahan said, via the San Francisco Chronicle. “No one played very well, especially in the passing game.”

Mullens was 18-of-32 for 221 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions against the Buccaneers in Sunday’s 27-9 loss. The story said the team evaluates the QB position every week so it's possible a switch back to Beathard takes place for Week 13.

On the heels of two mostly steady performances from Mullens and the offense, Shanahan will stick with the undrafted quarterback during the team's next game Nov. 25 at Tampa Bay. Accounting from those outings reveals 70-percent passing (43 of 61), 256 yards per game and four touchdowns versus two interceptions from Mullens as San Francisco averaged 28.5 points per contest. At least for the foreseeable future, Mullens will fend off C.J. Beathard for reps under center.

Mullens threw for 262 yards and three TDs with no interceptions, but it was against the Raiders last week. The good news is, Mullens gets the Giants on Monday night, but the G-men are ranked 5th in allowing points to opposing QBs. Mullens may have some value for those in deeper leagues or in two-QB leagues.
