Broncos rookie Ryan Torain, who was moving in on the starting job
before dislocating his left elbow in training camp, is expected to
begin practicing next week. That's practicing, not playing.
Shanahan said Monday that Torain wouldn't play until after the bye
week, which would put his debut at early November. But when that
day comes, he would give the Broncos something their other
tailbacks don't. He's bigger than Young and faster than Michael Pittman. He could be, at minimum, the short-yardage back, and
possibly the starter. It's difficult to project how much he'll
contribute, what with Torain having missed so much playing time,
but the potential is there to upgrade the running game.
