A lack of leadership from coach Wade Phillips and QB Tony Romo is preventing the Dallas Cowboys from ranking among the NFL's elite teams, Emmitt Smith suggested Tuesday.

In an interview with Sirius NFL Radio's Adam Schein and Rich Gannon, Smith said the team doesn't have the “discipline” and “focus” displayed by previous Super Bowl teams, and that those ingredients must come from the head coach and quarterback.

Citing Tom Coughlin and Bill Belichick as examples, Smith said the coach must “... instill discipline from Day 1. They don't come in trying to make friends. Matter of fact, they created a bunch of enemies and then made the enemies get on their terms, and then they moved forward. And that's one thing I believe the Dallas Cowboys can use.”

Smith, the NFL's all-time leading rusher and a three-time Super Bowl champion with the Cowboys, said Romo should “demand excellence” from his teammates.
