Perhaps signaling Carlos Hyde will remain shelved by a foot injury, the 49ers added their second veteran running back in as many days, agreeing to terms Tuesday with Pierre Thomas, according to his agent.
The 49ers also needed depth at the position, preferably from experienced backs, to compensate for the potential season-ending injuries Sunday to Reggie Bush (knee) and Mike Davis (hand). Hyde suffered a stress fracture Oct. 11 and finally was kept from suiting up last game, which the 49ers lost 27-6 at St. Louis.
On Monday, the 49ers signed veteran Shaun Draughn.
Thomas has had some workouts, but this is the first job he's landed for 2015. He could help the 49ers in the passing game, replacing Bush who was injured last week. With so many new pieces in place in the 9ers backfield now, it's hard to tell just how they will all be used if Hyde remains out. Given how Thomas has been a free agent for so long, it's hard to see him having a huge fantasy impact. But those struggling at the position may want to take a chance, perhaps especially in PPR leagues.
