The Training Room: Week 12 Injury Updates
Week 11 is proving to be costly for fantasy owners who are looking to make a push towards making the playoffs. Injuries continue to pile up as the season progresses, which can be an opportunity for your team to make some impactful moves or be left scrambling to find replacments. Let's get into the initial injury report heading into Week 12.
Updated Sunday 11/25/18
Player | Position | Team | Injury | Recovery Timetable | Potential Pickup | Comments |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Alex Smith | QB | Redskins | Fractured TIbia/Fibula | Out For Season | Colt McCoy | Smith got tangled between two Texans defenders and it was pretty gruesome to see his leg hanging after they finally rolled off of him. Smith will have surgery to get the fracture addressed and will miss the rest of the season. Tib/fib fractures are a difficult injury to return quickly from, but Smith should be fully recovered for next year. |
Melvin Gordon | RB | Chargers | Strained Hamstring | Game time decision | Austin Ekeler | Adam Schefter reports that Gordon is expected to play after dealing with some renewed discomfort in his hamstring during practice this week. Even though he is expected to play, the Chargers might give more touches to Ekeler and game flow could be a factor as to whether or not Gordon gets his normal touches. |
Todd Gurley | RB | Rams | Sprained Ankle | Day to day (bye week) | Malcolm Brown | Gurley was tackled from behind in Monday's game against the Chiefs and sprained his ankle, but all reports are that he should be fine. Given that the Rams are on bye should also help his availability to heal up and be ready for Week 13. |
Rob Gronkowski | TE | Patriots | Low Back/Ankle Injuries | Questionable for Week 12 | Jacob Hollister | Gronk is expected to make his return against the Jets in Week 12 after missing the last few games. TE is a pretty volatile position and although Gronk hasn't produced like we normally expect, it'd be hard to sit him at this point in the season. |
Doug Baldwin | WR | Seahawks | Strained Groin | Game time decision | Tyler Lockett | Ian Rapoport states that Baldwin has a good shot to play in Week 12 despite not doing much in practice this week due to his groin issue. In-game aggravations are always a concern for soft tissue injuries, but it looks like Baldwin is planning on playing through the injury. |
Randall Cobb | WR | Packers | Strained Hamstring | Game time decision | Marquez Valdes-Scantling | Cobb will enter Week 12 as a question mark again as he continues to deal with recurrent hamstring issues. With the Packers playing on Sunday night, there's no guarantee that he plays so I would try and have another plan in place just in case. |
Mitch Trubisky | QB | Bears | Sprained AC Joint | DOUBTFUL FOR WEEK 12 | Chase Daniel | There have been reports since early this week that Trubisky would not play this week, and his doubtful status for Thanksgiving day confirms that notion. AC joint sprains can be painful to try and play through, and his status will need to watched closely as they normally require an extended amount of rest to recover. He's questionable at best for Week 13. |
Devin Funchess | WR | Panthers | Low Back Injury | DOUBTFUL FOR WEEK 12 | D.J. Moore, Curtis Samuel | Funchess has been dealing with low back issues that will apparently keep him out of the lineup for Week 12 against the Seahawks. He'll be day to day heading into Week 13 but low back injuries do have a tendency to be troublesome so keep an eye on his status early next week to see if he's progressing. |
A.J. Green | WR | Bengals | Turf Toe | DOUBTFUL FOR WEEK 12 | Tyler Boyd, John Ross | There was some optimism that Green would be able to practice later in the week, but the toe is still not where it needs to be so the Bengals will be cautious with trying to rush him back too soon. |
Marvin Jones | WR | Lions | Sprained Knee | OUT FOR WEEK 12 | Kenny Golladay, Bruce Ellington | Jones status was in doubt for Thanksgiving when he missed Week 11 with the knee injury. Jones will need to practice in some fashion heading into Week 13 to feel confident that he is back on the right track. |
Joe Flacco | QB | Ravens | Sprained Hip | RULED OUT FOR WEEK 12 | Lamar Jackson | Flacco didn't practice all week and will sit out again. Flacco remains week to week and the Ravens will ride Lamar Jackson if he continues to produce in Flacco's absence. |
Chris Thompson | RB | Redskins | Rib Injury | OUT FOR WEEK 12 | Kapri Bibbs, Adrian Peterson | It's been a lost season for Thompson as he's missed 5 weeks of the season due to a number of injuries. There's no indication that Thompson is close to returning, so I would continue to find other options especially at this point of the fantasy season. |
Kerryon Johnson | RB | Lions | Sprained Knee | OUT FOR WEEK 12 | Theo Riddick, LeGarrette Blount | With a short week after injuring his knee, there was a slim chance Johnson would be available Thanksgiving day. He still isn't out of the woods with regards to being available Week 13 so keep an eye on his status |
Marcus Mariota | QB | Titans | Stinger | Removed from injury report | Blaine Gabbert | Mariota was able to practice in full the last two days which is a great sign for his availability on Monday night. Barring any late setbacks, he'll be ready to roll against the Texans. |
Robby Anderson | WR | Jets | Sprained Ankle | Game time decision | Jermaine Kearse, Quincy Enunwa | Anderson returned to a limited practice Friday, which gives him an outside chance to play on Sunday. Keep an eye on his status as we get closer to game time, if he can play he could have some value considering the production he had when Josh McCown was under center last year. |
Keke Coutee | WR | Texans | Strained Hamstring | Removed from injury report | Demaryius Thomas | Coutee is set to return from his hamstring issues on Monday night against the Titans in a big divisional game. The fact that he was removed from the injury report gives me less concern about a possible in game aggravation, but there are always more to consider when dealing with soft tissue injuries. |
Sam Darnold | QB | Jets | Sprained Foot | RULED OUT FOR WEEK 12 | Josh McCown | Darnold continues to recovery from a foot sprain that has sidelined him for the last few weeks. With the Jets not really going anywhere, there is no reason to rush him back so the Jets will ensure that he is 100% before he returns. |
O.J. Howard | TE | Buccaneers | Sprained Ankle | Put on IR, out for season | Cameron Brate | Howard injured his ankle and foot in Week 11 and was getting multiple opinions on his ankle before the Bucs finally decided to put him on IR. |
Ryan Tannehill | QB | Dolphins | Sprained Shoulder | Removed from injury report | Brock Osweiler | Tannehill practiced in limited fashion all week but was removed from the injury report at the end of the week. Tannehill has stated that he still has discomfort in his shoulder when throwing, but apparently the Dolphins medical staff feel good about him playing. |
Jimmy Graham | TE | Packers | Broken Thumb | Game time decision | Lance Kendricks | This is pretty remarkable considering a broken thumb for a player who catches the ball makes it very difficult to do. I wouldn't expect too much from Graham as there is just too much unknown as to whether or not he'll just be a decoy or if he'll play a significant role in the offense. My guess is he'll be in for red zone packages. |
Doug Martin | RB | Raiders | Sprained Ankle | Limited, expected to play | DeAndre Washington | Martin has been cleared to play in Week 12 against the Ravens. The Ravens D poses a tough matchup for Martin, so if you have other options, it might be a good idea to use those. |
Josh Allen | QB | Bills | Sprained Elbow | Practiced fully | Derek Anderson | Allen is set to return to the Bills lineup after missing the last 4 games due to the elbow injury. The Bills offense has been pretty stagnant in his absence, so maybe he can provide a spark for some of the other skill players. |
