The Training Room: Week 2 Injury Recap

Anthony Richardson, QB Indianapolis Colts

Injury: Concussion

Projected Timetable: Week 3-4

Initial Thoughts:

Richardson suffered a concussion after scoring his second touchdown, getting tackled, and having his head slam against the ground. He will now have to go through concussion protocol and pass all stages to be able to play in Week 3. The majority of quarterbacks return without missing a game.

Joe Burrow, QB Cincinnati Bengals

Injury: Right Calf Reinjury

Projected Timetable: Week 3-5

Initial Thoughts:

Burrow admitted to reporters that he suffered a reinjury of his prior calf strain but states he is Day to Day. The Bengals offense got off to a really rough start for the second straight week but did start to heat up in the second half so maybe his calf is not limiting him all that much. The hope is that if his calf really isn’t 100%, this does not turn into an Aaron Rodgers-type of situation with a prior calf strain that leads to excessive loading through the Achilles. It might be best for his long-term prospects if he sits out a week or two to get right.

Saquon Barkley, RB New York Giants

Injury: Right Ankle Sprain

Projected Timetable: Week 4-6

Initial Thoughts:

The mechanism of injury appeared to be that of a right high ankle sprain, but we have not heard more information as of me writing this. It has been confirmed that he does have an ankle injury, so it is either a low ankle or a high ankle sprain. He was reportedly hobbling and limping around the locker room with noticeable ankle swelling. Of note, the Giants play on Thursday night against the 49ers, so it seems unlikely that they will have him this next week. Hopefully, he can return for Week 4 or 5.

David Montgomery, RB Detroit Lions

Injury: Right Thigh

Projected Timetable: Week 4-6

Initial Thoughts:

Montgomery told reporters in the locker room that his quadriceps injury will likely take a few weeks to heal. Hopefully, we hear more information as the week goes on, particularly if he gets an MRI and information is revealed on the severity of his injury. I would say this should lead to a big boost to Jahmyr Gibbs, but the Lions are insistent on slowly ramping him up instead of force-feeding him. Prepare to be without Montgomery for a few weeks.

Amari Cooper, WR Cleveland Browns

Injury: Groin strain

Projected Timetable: Week 3-4

Initial Thoughts:

Cooper suffered a re-injury to a prior groin strain in practice on Saturday and will be unlikely to play on Monday. He suffered the original injury in Week 1 while doing the splits during an acrobatic catch, straining his groin. Anticipate him missing Week 2, with a chance to return for Week 3.

Davante Adams, WR Las Vegas Raiders

Injury: Concussion

Projected Timetable: Week 3-4

Initial Thoughts:

Adams suffered a concussion and will now have to go through the protocol in order to play in Week 3. The average time missed for concussion for wide receivers is 0-1 game.

Jaylen Waddle, WR Miami Dolphins

Injury: Concussion

Projected Timetable: Week 3-4

Initial Thoughts:

Waddle suffered a concussion and will now have to go through the protocol in order to play in Week 3. The average time missed for concussion for wide receivers is 0-1 game.

Garrett Wilson, WR New York Jets

Injury: Chest/Wind Knocked Out of Him

Projected Timetable: Week 3

Initial Thoughts:

This should not be a concern but wanted to note it since he is a big name and many will wonder. Robert Saleh stated that he simply got the wind knocked out of him after landing hard and awkwardly. Still monitor.

Brandon Aiyuk, WR San Francisco 49ers

Injury: Left Shoulder

Projected Timetable: Week 3-4

Initial Thoughts:

It appeared that Aiyuk suffered an AC sprain to his left shoulder on his very first catch, and then reinjured it on his second catch. He continued to play all game but was visibly in pain. Monitor as the week goes on for his practice status, but my gut says he suits up for Week 3 even on a short week.

Odell Beckham, WR Baltimore Ravens

Injury: Ankle Reinjury

Projected Timetable: Week 3-4

Initial Thoughts:

Beckham’s ankle injury is reportedly mild, but this is now a reinjury of his ankle sprain that he suffered prior to Week 1. Given his past injury history, plus knowing that even low ankle sprains can take 1-2 weeks to return to play, the Ravens may be without him for Week 3. If he is out, it should be a boost to Zay Flowers.

Darnell Mooney, WR Chicago Bears

Injury: Knee Sprain

Projected Timetable: Week 4-5

Initial Thoughts:

Mooney’s knee sprain does not sound serious, but there seems to be concern that he will miss at least one week. No specifics have been given, but the assumption here is a knee sprain, such as an MCL sprain. Monitor his practice status as the week goes on. The Bears passing attack has been atrocious, so it might be best to just avoid anyone not named D.J. Moore for now.

DK Metcalf, WR Seattle Seahawks

Injury: Ribs

Projected Timetable: Week 3

Initial Thoughts:

Metcalf took a brutal shot to his left side and was taken to the locker room, likely to be assessed and then possibly receive an injection to keep playing. My guess is that post-game his ribs were hurting pretty badly, but he kept playing all game and my assumption here is that this will not keep him from playing in Week 3 considering he only missed a few snaps.

Logan Thomas, TE Washington Commanders

Injury: Concussion

Projected Timetable: Week 3-4

Initial Thoughts:

Thomas suffered a concussion and will now have to go through the protocol in order to play in Week 3. The average time missed for concussion for tight ends is 0-1 game.
