“I think I should have four or five (sacks) every game,” Freeney said. “Realistically, things happen. You miss plays. You miss sacks. That kind of drives you. I think I miss some every game. I think I’ve missed three or four every game.
“What game is it? I should have 21.”
Freeney says this with a smile, a look that says he’s having the time of his life right now, and why not? His team is 6-0 and in firm control of the AFC South. He has seven sacks this season, fifth-best in the NFL, and is riding a streak of seven consecutive games with at least one sack.

The Giants have seen enough of Brian Westbrook over the years to know one thing for sure: They're much better off if he's not on the field.

They might get their wish tomorrow, too, since Westbrook, the Eagles' running back and one of the biggest Giant-killers of them all, has been sidelined all week with the after-effects of a concussion. Even though the Eagles list him as "questionable," Westbrook hadn't even been cleared to work out as of Friday.

His status will be a game-time decision, said Eagles coach Andy Reid, but the team is obviously being cautious since Westbrook was knocked unconscious for close to a minute on Monday night and was still experiencing mild headaches on Wednesday. If he can't play, one of the Giants' biggest headaches will have disappeared.

"I think they lose a lot (if he doesn't play)," said Giants defensive end Justin Tuck. "Obviously (rookie LeSean) McCoy is a talented running back, but Westbrook is one of the most diverse. And he's been a Giant-killer over the years, so I think they lose a lot without him."

Lions coach Jim Schwartz said Friday quarterback Matthew Stafford and wide receiver Calvin Johnson will be game-time decisions Sunday against St. Louis.

Both are recovering from right knee injuries. Stafford has missed two games, Johnson one. Stafford has practiced all week. Johnson was limited Thursday and Friday. Both players were listed as questionable for Sunday's game on the injury report.

"Both of them have made a lot of progress over the last couple weeks," Schwartz said. "I've said before: The bye came at a good time for us. I don't think any of them are 100% yet, but they're getting closer."

Johnson seemed to do less Friday than he did Thursday in the portion of practice open to reporters. He went through some drills and then jogged around the field.

"We're just trying to not overwork it, you know?" Johnson said. "I don't want to mess it up even more than it is."

Schwartz said Johnson did not have to practice fully to play.

s Carolina Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme's slump has deepened, his position coach is trying something new with him this week.

"When a player is struggling, you look at yourself as a coach," said first-year quarterbacks coach Rip Scherer. "What am I doing? What am I not doing?"

Scherer's answer: Allow Delhomme to be himself.

"I thought, 'Maybe I'll just try and pull back a little and let him be Jake a little more,' " Scherer said. "Jake has a style that's unique to him. Maybe I had been giving him too much (to think about).

"We've been trying to do that the past few weeks, but we're making more of a conscientious effort this week."

Scherer, who came to the Panthers in January after four seasons with the Cleveland Browns, said he has never tried to tinker with Delhomme's throwing mechanics.

Mario Manningham sat out yesterday's practice after landing on his left shoulder trying to catch a pass on Thursday. But the wide receiver, who is emerging as a prime target for Eli Manning, said he would be on the field when the Giants visit the Eagles tomorrow.

"I'll be out there, no question," said Manningham, who rode the stationary bike yesterday and was listed as questionable.

The second-year receiver has battled other injuries this season, including one to the same shoulder against Dallas. Nevertheless, he said wasn't concerned.

"It's just a little bruise," said Manningham, the team's second leading receiver (28 receptions, 439 yards and four touchdowns) behind Steve Smith.

Packers QB Aaron Rodgers (foot probable) returned to full practice Friday and is fully expected to start this weekend.

Giants RB Ahmad Bradshaw (ankle probable) returned to limited practice Friday and is expected to play Sunday.

Eagles WR Desean Jackson (foot probable) took reps Friday and is good to start this weekend.

Vikings WR Bernard Berrian (leg questionable) was limited in practice Friday and is questionable for Sunday's matchup with the Packers. Berrian isn't looking like a fantasy play this weekend. If he is out or limited, Percy Harvin and Sidney Rice will see more passes.

Lions WR Calvin Johnson (knee questionable) was limited in practice Friday. Johnson said he wants to be careful, and make sure he doesn't hurt the knee more. He is a game-time decision. This one is really killing fantasy owners. If you are debating between Johnson and another top wideout, go with the safer option.

Texans WR Andre Johnson (chest probable) took all reps Friday. Coach Gary Kubiak said, "Andre looked great. He's ready to go." Get him in your lineups.

Colts WR Anthony Gonzalez (knee out) has been officially ruled out for Sunday. This is no surprise.

Bills WR Terrell Owens (not injury related) was held out of practice Friday, but is fully expected to start.

Saints TE Jeremy Shockey (probable, shoulder) returned to full practice Friday and will start Monday Night.

Jets WR Jerricho Cotchery (hamstring questionable) is expected to play this weekend barring a setback.

Lions QB Matthew Stafford (knee questionable) took limited reps Friday. Stafford is expected to start over Daunte Culpepper, but you will want to check the Sunday innactive list prior to game time. Staffords numbers will be better if Calvin Johnson gets the start as well.

Giants WR Mario Manningham (shoulder questionable) missed practice Friday with a shoulder that he hurt at the end of Thursday practice. Manningham is optimistic that he will play, but make sure you check the inactive list prior to kickoff. Hakeem Nicks looks like a better play this week, and moving forward.

Rams WR Donnie Avery (shoulder probable) was limited Friday but should start Sunday in a good matchup with the Lions.

Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin (ankle questionable) took limited reps again on Friday. He is in line to start this weekend. He was obviously hampered last week, but still managed to receive for 75 yards. He is healthier this week than last.

Eagles RB Brian Westbrook (concussion questionable) is officially questionable for Sunday, but it seems like a longshot that he will play. If Westbrook is out or limited, Lesean Mccoy will step in and take the load.

Panthers WR Muhsin Muhammad (knee out) has been ruled out for this week. Dwayne Jarrett will get the start. While this makes Jarrett a better option than most weeks, his fantasy value is still extremely limited. The Panther's passing game is looking even worse than at the start of the week. If their defense cannot keep the Cardinals off the board, this game could get ugly in a hurry.

Vikings WR Percy Harvin (illness questionable) missed practice again Friday, but will try to play Sunday. The Vikings will need him to step up with Bernard Berrian likely out or limited.

Colts WR Reggie Wayne (groin questionable) returned to full practice Friday. The team is optimistic that he will play Sunday. He is still a top option this week, but takes a bit of drop because of the injury concerns. Make sure to check the inactive list to be safe.

Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (heel questionable) practiced fully Friday, and is expected to play against the Cardinals #1 rush defense.

Colts RB Donald Brown (shoulder doubtful) missed practice again Friday and is not expected to play Sunday. Mike Hart will fill in as backup and Joseph Addai will likely see a workload increase.

Packers TE Jermichael Finley (knee doubtful) missed practice again Friday and is looking very doubtful for Sunday. Donald Lee would start in Finley's place.

Browns K Phil Dawson (groin probable) returned to practice Friday and looks like he may make his return this week. Regardless of who's kicking, you don't want Dawson on your roster.

Vikings QB Brett Favre (hip probable) was limited again Friday due to old age. He will certainly be starting this week against the Packers.

Panthers TE Dante Rosario (knee out) has been ruled out for the week. Gary Barnidge will see extra snaps, but you don't want to be anywhere near this mess.

Titans WR Nate Washington (quadriceps probable) returned to full practice Friday and is ready to start Sunday against the Jaguars.

Raiders WR Louis Murphy (hip probable) returned to full practice Friday and is set to start this weekend.

Cardinals WR Steve Breaston (knee probable) was limited at practice again Friday. Breaston should be good to play against the Panthers, but check the inactives just to be sure.

Jets WR David Clowney (ankle questionable) was limited again Friday. He is expected to play Sunday, but will see his role decrease with the return of Jericho Cotchery.

Bills TE Shawn Nelson (illness) has been ruled out for this week. Don't look to the Bills for any sort of TE production.

Ravens QB Joe Flacco (ankle probable) practiced fully Friday and will get the start this week as expected.

The Indianapolis Colts received some good news heading into Sunday's home game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Wide receiver Reggie Wayne (strained groin) and defensive end Dwight Freeney (knee) both took part in Friday's practice and are expected to play. Defensive tackle Eric Foster (shoulder) also practiced and should be available against the 49ers.

The post-practice injury report listed Wayne, Freeney, Foster, and tight end Jacob Tamme (hamstring) as questionable. Rookie running back Donald Brown (shoulder) is doubtful.

Quarterback Peyton Manning saw limited work on Friday but will start. Safety Bob Sanders (knee) went through the workout and will make his second straight start.

While it appears there's a good chance Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford will start in Sunday's game against the St. Louis Rams, the odds of receiver Calvin Johnson joining the action could be diminishing.

Johnson, who is hobbled by a sore knee, practiced Thursday but didn't do as much today.

"Just trying not to overwork it. I didn't want to mess it up more than it is,'' Johnson said after today's practice.
As to whether he might play against the Rams, Johnson added, "It's a game-time decision.''

"Both are progressing and both will be game-time decisions,'' Lions coach Jim Schwartz said of Stafford and Johnson. "I don't think any of them are 100 percent yet, but they're getting closer.''

Running back Darren Mcfadden was on an adjoining field with a member of the athletic training staff Friday, doing some light jogging and agility work.

Wearing an elastic brace on his right knee, ostensibly the one which was “cleaned up” through arthroscopic surgery, it was the first time McFadden has been on the field during the time when media members are present.

Meanwhile, Louis Murphy, who didn’t complete practice because of a hip injury Thursday, was going through drillwork gingerly and at halfspeed with the wide receivers. Cornerback Chris Johnson, who failed to complete practice because of a groin injury, was putting on his helmet and going through a tip drill as the media window concluded.

While rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford completed a full week of practice today and appears ready to play in Sunday's game, it doesn't look as promising for receiver Calvin Johnson.

Stafford has taken all the No. 1 snaps during the short period of practice in which the media is allowed to watch. Johnson appeared to do more during the drills on Thursday than he did today. Johnson is recovering from a knee injury he suffered against the Pittsburgh Steelers more than two weeks ago.

The Lions aren't expected to discuss the status of Stafford or Johnson today and head coach Jim Schwartz will likely term them both as game-time decisions.

The Giants got help with their injury report when LB Michael Boley and DT Chris Canty returned to practice this week. But during Friday's practice, WR Mario Manningham was a surprise addition to the sideline.

Manningham, who has not been on the team's injury report this week, was on the stationary bike during the portion of practice open to the media. CB Aaron Ross (hamstring) was the only other player not practicing.

Manningham has had a variety of upper body injuries this season: He hurt his shoulder against the Cowboys in Week 2 and left the Saints game early with a back/ribs injury. But he has yet to miss a game.

We'll know more from coach Tom Coughlin when he meets with the media after practice. If Manningham needs to sit out Sunday against the Eagles, or is physically limited, impressive rookie Hakeem Nicks could be thrust into a larger role.

Based on how the week has gone so far, it sure looks like wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad and safety Charles Godfrey will be among the players declared out.

The Eagles haven't said Brian Westbrook won't play, but he hasn't done anything on the field since sustaining a concussion in the first quarter Monday night against Washington.

"He did better today," coach Andy Reid said of Westbrook in a statement Thursday. "He's feeling a little bit better [Thursday] than [Wednesday] ... We'll add a little bit [today] and see how he does. It's still going to be a game-time decision."

If Westbrook must sit, Lesean Mccoy and first-year pickup Eldra Buckley must carry the rushing load.

If that's the case, the two say bring it on.

"I've been in this situation before," said McCoy, who started against New Orleans and Kansas City in place of Westbrook. "The preparation is a little different, and you have to work on things like pass protection, but I'm kind of in the flow with the offense, so I don't think anything will surprise me."

Receiver Andre Johnson participated fully in the Texans practice Thursday, showing no ill effects from the lung bruise he suffered against the 49ers and seemingly leaving little doubt about his being ready for the Bills on Sunday.

“He took pretty close to all the reps he normally takes, and he didn't have any problems,” coach Gary Kubiak said. “It's not Sunday yet, but I was very encouraged.”

Johnson, who will wear a padded extension to his shoulder pads to protect his chest, had already insisted nothing was going to keep him out of the game. Nonetheless, the Texans were sending him back to the doctor for another thorough examination, just to make sure nothing has been missed.

“I feel good,” Johnson said. “Like I said, I wasn't in any pain, and I'm still not in any pain. My breathing is fine when I'm out there running. I'm ready to go get this scan to see if they see stuff. Hopefully, there's nothing bad when they look at the scan.”

As for the extra padding, he said: “I haven't played in anything like that since Little League, so it's been a long time. I think it's something I definitely have to get used to a little bit, but I don't think it will restrain me.”

It was enough to make Charlie Frye sit up and take notice, provided he was fully awake at the time.

Frye got to work at 6:30 a.m., and was pleasantly surprised to be joined by starting quarterback Jamarcus Russell two days after the worst day of his professional life.

“He got in here Wednesday, earliest he’s ever been,” Frye said. “I think he was in here at 6:30. That’s step one. The things he continues to need to do is stay the course and just maybe do a little bit more.”

Bart Scott, the so-called "Mad Backer," has a simple game plan for defending Dolphins QB Chad Henne.

"I hope to get him out of there," Scott said today.

Asked if he wants to hurt Henne, Scott replied, "I want to hit him and get him out of there. That's for anybody who touches the football, period. It's that type of game. Write it down however you want to write it down. You don't have to do something dirty to get somebody out of there."

Of course, to hit him, they will have to get close to him, which the Jets didn't do in the first meeting.

Marc Bulger's days as the Rams' starting quarterback appear to be numbered.

The team, which hasn't posted a winning record since 2003, will lug a 17-game losing streak to Detroit on Sunday. And Bulger, 32, hasn't been able to reprise anywhere near the production of his Pro Bowl season in 2006.

Barring an extraordinary Bulger rally, the Rams almost certainly will be in the market for a quarterback next year, and possibly very early in the draft. Unless their fortunes reverse dramatically, they'll be at or near the top of the selection list in a year in which the class of top-shelf QBs figures to be strong.

The Seattle Seahawks learned that its defense will lose one of its captains for the year as linebacker Lofa Tatupu underwent surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle. He will be placed on injured reserve, likely replaced on the active roster by cornerback Marcus Trufant.

Raiders WR Louis Murphy (hip) was limited in practice Thursday. His hip started acting up and the Raiders shut him down. His status is uncertain for this weekend.

Colts WR Anthony Gonzalez (knee) did not return to practice Thursday. Perhaps next week.

Colts RB Donald Brown (shoulder) missed practice again Thursday. He is not expected to play Sunday. Mike Hart will serve as backup to Joseph Addai.

Reggie Wayne (groin) was held out of practice again Thursday. Wayne is expected to play, but we would like to see him practice Friday. We will know more when the Friday injury report comes out.

Larry Johnson and the Chiefs are working on a settlement to decide the running back's future, Johnson's agent, Peter Schaffer, told The Star in an e-mail Thursday.

Asked whether that settlement would involve a separation from the team, Schaffer said: "Not necessarily."

Lions WR Calvin Johnson (knee) returned to limited practice Thursday. He was running routes and catching passes and did not appear hobbled by the knee. This is great news for Johnson owners. The Lions could really use Megatron this weekend in what appears to be a great opportunity at a second win (the Rams).

Texans WR Andre Johnson (chest) returned to limited practice Thursday. Johnson wants to play, and coach Gary Kubiak was encouraged by Johnson's practice, saying he took pretty close to all reps.

Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin (ankle) took limited reps Thursday. He is expected to start this week.

Jaguars WR Torry Holt (not injury related) took reps Thursday after being limited Wednesday. Holt has a nice matchup against the Titans.

Cowboys RB Marion Barber (thumb) took reps Thursday. He is still not 100%, but will be the starter and most consistent back in Dallas.

Titans RB Javon Ringer (back) missed practice Thursday and is expected to miss a few weeks after suffering a back injury in practice Wednesday.

Titans WR Nate Washington (quadricep) did not practice Thursday with a quad. The severity is unknown, but Washington's is not a fantasy option until Vince Young proves he can get the ball to his receivers.

Packers QB Aaron Rodgers (foot) was limited agian Thursday. This is only precautionary and he should be fine to start this weekend.

Cardinals WR Steve Breaston (knee) was limited in practice Thurday. He is regularly limited, but has been playing.

Jamarcus Russell's Raiders teammates remain steadfast in their belief that he is just going through a rough stretch and that he remains the best option at quarterback for a team that has lacked a proven one since Rich Gannon retired after the 2004 season.

"He's fine," defensive end Jay Richardson said Wednesday.

Left offensive tackle Mario Henderson said his confidence in Russell is as high now as it was at the start of the season and that how well a quarterback plays goes hand in hand with how the 10 other guys on the field perform.

Wide receiver Andre Johnson returned to practice on Thursday, a day after sitting out because of a lung contusion suffered against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 7.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak called it a "step in the right direction."

"(I'm) very encouraged," Kubiak said. "He took probably pretty close to almost all the reps he normally takes and didn't seem to have any problems. We'll see how he feels."

On Wednesday, Johnson did not practice but was able to run before practice. He told reporters afterward that the team would have to cut his leg off to keep him from playing against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

It’s not too surprising Dan Henning stood up for wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. during the weekly press conference by the Dolphins offensive coordinator.

Henning’s reasoning is what is surprising.

“Ted Ginn made less mistakes in that game than at least nine other players on the offense,” Henning said, referring to the Dolphins’ 46-34 loss to the Saints.

“Ted Ginn had a game he’s not happy with and we’re not happy with,” Henning said. “But it’s just like my children. I’m not always happy with my children, but I love my children, I’m going to support my children.”

Henning said Ginn remains one of the team’s top-four WRs and he’s the only one who provides a consistent a down field threat.

“Ted Ginn is the only player since we been here that’s gotten behind anybody’s defense and been able to knock to top off the defense,” Henning said. “We’re going to continue to use Ted Ginn the way we think is best to use him to help this football team.”

With Allen Rossum out 2-4 weeks with a hamstring injury, Felix Jones will be the Cowboys' main kick returner but coach Wade Phillips said Wednesday they will look at some other possible returners.

Jones wants the job. He is averaging 23 yards per return on eight tries this season.

"I guess it's my time to step up," Jones said. "Hopefully we don't have to do it too many times but I'm ready when my time's called."

The Saints placed FB Heath Evans on injured reserver today and signed FB Kyle Eckel to take his roster spot.

Falcons running back Jason Snelling, who has filled in admirably as a backup at fullback and halfback, did not practice on Thursday.

Snelling suffered a hamstring injury in the Dallas game, but head coach Mike Smith did not have to issue an official injury report, per league rules, until Thursday.

It was the latest blow for the Falcons, who are hoping to get running backs Ovie Mughelli (calf) and Jerious Norwood (right hip flexor) back for the Saints game on Monday night in New Orleans.

Snelling's injury also led to the Falcons signing running back Aaron Stecker on Tuesday.

Seems like Brian Westbrook's headache is gone. Reid said he'll begin aerobics workout tomorrow. Still called him a gametime decision.

Ahmad Bradshaw went to see an ankle specialist on Wednesday who told him what the Giants had told him: he’s cleared to keep playing on a cracked bone in his foot.

At least until the end of the season, or until the crack becomes a full-blown fracture - whichever comes first.

“Of course. I know that. It all depends on the bone and how it is in my foot,” Bradshaw said Thursday as he revealed to reporters the full extent of his injury. “I just plan on going out there and giving my all. If it breaks, it does and I’ll get surgery.
If not, I’ll wait until the end of the season. Hopefully, then I won’t need it. But more than likely, I’ll plan on having surgery.”
Bradshaw said he has a crack in the fifth metatarsal of his right foot. That’s the bone on the outside of the foot, which Bradshaw was told is the easiest bone to break. Bradshaw believes his choppy, “bow-legged” style of running is what caused the injury.

In two weeks, running back Larry Johnson(notes) will come off suspension, and the franchise will be faced with yet another pivotal decision: how to handle a wayward star who has seemingly worn out his welcome with the coaching staff and front office. A league source familiar with the situation said Thursday morning that despite speculation to the contrary, the Chiefs haven’t decided to cut Johnson in the immediate future. However, his standing with the team beyond this season seems almost sure to have been sealed.

Panthers WR Muhammad (knee), FS Godfrey (ankle) and TE Rosario (knee) all held out of practice again Thursday. Dwayne Jarrett is preparing to start for Muhammad.

We had to ask Cardinals coach Whisenhunt if Beanie Wells is going to start over Hightower on Sunday when the Carolina Panthers visit University of Phoenix Stadium.

His answer was a little curious.

"It's not going to happen yet."

"That speaks to our versatility," Whisenhunt said. "It's also going to limit Beanie's carries a little bit just because of the different packages that emphasize the strengths of the different backs.

"But when he does get the hot hand . . . we're going to use him more and more."

Bengals Tight end Dan Coats’ problems with drops and ball security have gotten him demoted.

On this week’s depth chart, John paul Foschi has moved ahead of Coats. After injuries to Reggie Kelly and Ben Utecht in training camp, Foschi was signed by the Bengals on Aug. 17 after opening training camp with Oakland.

Foschi, who is in his fourth year, has eight receptions for 74 yards, including a 3-yard TD in last week’s win over Chicago. His best game was in Week 5 at Cleveland with six catches for 65 yards.

Rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford practiced for the third straight day today and it appears he'll be the starter when the Lions host the St. Louis Rams on Sunday. However, nothing is official and it's unlikely head coach Jim Schwartz will make an announcement today.

Receiver Calvin Johnson, who missed the last two days of practice, was going through some drills in the part of practice the media is allowed to watch. Johnson was running routes and catching passes and didn't appear to be hobbled at all by his right knee injury. If Johnson doesn't have any swelling or a setback of any other kind by tomorrow, it appears he'll also play in Sunday's game.

Packers TE Jermichael Finley will not practice at all this week and will focus entirely on rehabilitation. On Sunday, he'll go to the stadium and see if he can run well enough to play. If so, he'll be active.

"We have a lot of things, like I'm sure a lot of offenses do, you carry over week to week and he is a big part of that," McCarthy said. "So, things that we're looking to carry over from past weeks where there are a lot of reps and so forth, we'd like to have the opportunity to potentially carry that into the game."

Judging from how McCarthy addressed it, there appears to be a good chance running back Ahman Green will be active this week.

Green, who was signed last week to replace injured Deshawn Wynn, hasn't had full contact since November, but McCarthy thinks he can help the team in third-down situations and in relief of starter Ryan Grant.

"We're looking at Ahman as far as contributing," McCarthy said. "He'll potentially have an opportunity to be up. We have some injury situations that we're working through. But I like what I've seen so far from Ahman.

"Once again, he wasn't here for training camp. Things have changed in the offense since our time together in the past. We're just trying to work him through that."

Because receiver Andre Johnson didn't practice Wednesday, Andre Davis was working with the first team opposite Kevin Walter. Johnson expects to play at Buffalo, but Davis is getting ready just in case.

“It's huge,” coach Gary Kubiak said about having Davis. “All you got to do is go back and look at the (San Francisco) game. No Andre. (We) need a couple of first downs. It's second-and-10, and he (Davis) runs a great (route), picks up a first down.

“We have a lot of confidence in all of our receivers, and our play calling doesn't change.”

The Vince Young era will resume on Sunday when the Titans play the Jaguars at LP Field.

Coach Jeff Fisher will announce later today that Young will replace veteran Kerry Collins as the starting quarterback, according to sources familiar with the situation.

Fisher could not immediately be reached for comment. Young, Collins and Fisher are expected to speak with reporters after practice, which is scheduled to begin at noon.

The quarterback switch comes a few days after Titans owner Bud Adams informed the coaching staff he wants Young to start immediately. Young, the team’s first-round draft pick in 2006, has played sparingly since last September’s season-opener against the Jaguars.

Larry Johnson will be challenging the suspension immediately.

"We will be filing an appeal tomorrow," agent Peter Schaffer told us by phone tonight. "It is our belief that the action did not warrant the discipline unilaterally imposed by the Chiefs. We'll be asking for an expeditied hearing, and hopefully we can work out a positive, mutual resolution with the Chiefs. If not, we'll defer to the arbitrator's decision. Larry's desire is to get back to his teammates as soon as he can."

Unlike league-imposed suspensions, which ultimately are appealed to the Commissioner, suspensions imposed by the team are reviewed by an independent arbitrator.

Johnson is banished from the team until November 9. If the suspension is upheld, he'll miss only one game -- November 8 at Jacksonville.

Jamaal Charles and Kolby Smith split most of the practice time Wednesday as the Chiefs’ running backs, both of them trying to prove they’re ready for a more significant role.

Charles caught passes during practice, and Smith tested his surgically repaired knee at the team’s indoor facility. Both appeared capable of handling a greater load.

“If they need me,” Smith said Wednesday, “I can be used.”

Not only did Carolina Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme get a chance to keep his job Wednesday, he might be getting a chance to be himself again.

Along with retaining the starting position, the coaching staff has agreed to back off some of the micro-managing of Delhomme's mechanics — which some feel has held him back this year.

Two sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed to The Herald on Wednesday that quarterbacks coach Rip Scherer had agreed to pull back some of his technical suggestions, and let Delhomme again play the more spontaneous style he's accustomed to.

Redskins TE Chris Cooley likely won't miss the rest of the season, as Jim Zorn originally feared. Dr. Mark Myerson successfully repaired the fracture in Cooley's lower right tibia on Wednesday morning. With Zorn standing just two feet away, Cooley had three screws inserted into the ankle.

"It was a very noninvasive procedure - it was done in such a way that if all goes well, we'll get him back in as little as four weeks," Zorn said Wednesday during his weekly appearance on "The Sports Fix" on ESPN 980.

Cooley will be kept on the 53-man roster, leaving him eligible to play if the injury allows him to return for the final month of the season. The Redskins will play short-handed in the interim, a move Zorn called "a risk, and it looks like it's going to be a pretty good risk."

Donovan Mcnabb is trying to work out some kinks in his delivery in practice this week. McNabb knows he didn't throw the ball well Monday night at Washington; the Eagles didn't need him to be all that sharp against a Redskins team in crisis, but they'll need his best game this week against the New York Giants, especially if Brian Westbrook can't play.

McNabb gets into these funks, as Eagles fans well know.

"Rushing throws," he said yesterday. "Trying to rush them, trying to get the ball out quick to give [the receiver] an opportunity to get up the field, make the guy miss, or whatever it might be, instead of just giving it to them."

Bucs RB Derrick Ward isn't the only one keeping tabs of his carries.

The coaching staff has been trying to find ways to get Ward involved, but Cadillac Williams' strong play and game circumstances have made it difficult to get Ward more work.

"Derrick's a very valuable piece of this team, but Cadillac's a tremendous running back, too," offensive coordinator Greg Olson said. "It's a good problem to have. We need to have more possessions, we need to have more plays, and that'll sort itself out."

"Josh Freeman will take over as starting quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers," coach Raheem Morris said after practice. "No discredit to what Josh Johnson did for this football team. He's gone out there and gave us his best efforts. But the preparation, the timing, how we want to acclimate our young man into our system, into our organization, into our town, into our community, we think it's best coming off the bye. It's the most time to prepare.

"It's time to see Josh Freeman."

According to Morris, Freeman can handle the entire offensive package. "You don't scale back," he said. "You do what you've been doing, you get better at what you've been doing. … You let him see the adjustments, you let him go through the adjustments mentally, and now it's time for him to go play physically. Here we go."

49ers coach Mike Singletary said wide receiver Brandon Jones, signed for $5.4 million in the offseason, will be active Sunday.

The Kansas City Chiefs have suspended RB Larry Johnson for Conduct Detrimental to the Club effective immediately. Johnson will not be permitted to participate in any team activities or be on team premises until Monday, November 9th. The Chiefs will have no further comment on Johnson’s status at this time.

Raiders RB Darren Mcfadden has been a ghost since his minor knee surgery. He hasn’t been seen in the locker room during media availaibility since being injured nor has he been on the field during initial rehab stages during practice with the athletic training staff.

McFadden will be inactive for his fourth game, and it’s no slam dunk he’ll be back after the bye following the Chargers game.

Packers will workout TE Jermichael Finley on Saturday or Sunday morning. If he's good, he'll play.

As Jim Caldwell sees it, Indianapolis Colts RB Donald Brown means well.

But the Colts' first-year coach said on Wednesday just because the rookie running back wants to practice and prepare to play against the San Francisco 49ers Sunday doesn't mean he necessarily will do so.

Brown, the Colts' first-round selection in the 2009 NFL Draft, was one of two players to sustain significant injuries this past Sunday against St. Louis. He sustained a shoulder injury that has his status uncertain for Sunday, while wide receiver Reggie Wayne sustained a groin injury that Caldwell said will keep the three-time Pro Bowl receiver out of practice Wednesday.

Brown said on Wednesday he plans to practice and prepare this week as if he is going to play, but Caldwell called that "wishful thinking."

Coach Jim Caldwell had two things to say today about wide receiver Reggie Wayne, who suffered a groin injury Sunday during the Indianapolis Colts' 42-6 victory at St. Louis.
First, “He feels good.” Second, “He won’t practice today more than likely.”

Of Wayne’s prospects of playing Sunday, when San Francisco visits Lucas Oil Stadium, Caldwell added, “we hope that he’ll progress throughout the week and just kind of increase his activity and we’ll see where he is come Friday or so.”

The outlook is the same for running back Donald Brown (shoulder) but Caldwell did expect wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez to return to practice this week. Gonzalez has been out since suffering ligament damage in his left knee in the season opener.

There is no link, Caldwell said, between the timing of Gonzalez’s return and the possibility of Wayne’s absence.

Texans WR Andre Johnson (chest) missed practice Wednesday, but insisted that he will play Sunday barring his leg being cut off. Johnson is a beast, wanting to return to the game last week after coughing up blood on the field. Expect Johnson to return to practice later in the week.

Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin (ankle) was a limited participant Wednesday. The Cardinals are positive on Boldin, saying his work should increase as the week goes on. This is much better than last week, and he managed to play and catch 3 balls for 75 yards.

Lions QB Matthew Stafford (knee) practiced on a limited basis again on Wednesday and looks like he may be able to start this week barring any setbacks. If starting, Stafford could be a decent fill-in option going against the Rams.

Vikings QB Brett Favre (hip) was limited in practice Wednesday. He certainly will not miss this weeks game in Green Bay.

Seahwaks QB Matt Hasselbeck (ribs) was held out of practice Wednesday, but is expected to play Sunday barring any setbacks.

Eagles RB Brian Westbrook (concussion) missed practice Wednesday. He is being called a game-time decision, but will likely miss at least this week. Rookie Lesean Mccoy will fill in for Westbrook.

Colts WR Reggie Wayne (groin) did not practice Wednesday. Wayne said earlier that the groin feels good. He looks on pace ot play Sunday as usual. We will know more later in the week.

Packers QB Aaron Rodgers (foot) was a limited practice participant Wednesday. He is fully expected to start when the Vikings come to town.

Eagles WR Desean Jackson (foot) did not practice Wednesday. He strained the foot Monday Night, but returned to the game. He should be fine to play against the Giants this week.

Raiders RB Darren Mcfadden (knee) missed practice Wednesday. He is not expected to be back this week. Justin Fargas will continue as the Raiders lead back.

Brett Favre insisted Wednesday he hasn't thought much about emotions he might feel when Minnesota travels to Green Bay, except when others bring up the subject. After 16 seasons as a Packers star and icon, Favre will play there for the first time as a visitor. The Vikings can open a commanding lead in the NFC North with a win.

Favre says he doesn't believe he'll be as nervous as he was in the hours leading up to Minnesota's first game against Green Bay three weeks ago.

Regarding potential disrespect from betrayed Packers fans, Favre says he recognizes their devotion to the team but expects the "true fans" to maintain their appreciation.

The Cards had three players unable to practice today, but none of them were cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, who sprained his ankle Sunday. DRC admitted he was a little surprised he has gotten that much better that fast — he estimated himself at 85 percent — and he actually practiced fully. Safety Antrel Rolle gutted out a sore foot Sunday and was resting Sunday. Coach Ken Whisenhunt is hopeful Rolle’s rest will help him later in the week. Defensive end Kenny Iwebema (knee) also sat out — it isn’t considered serious — as did tight end Stephen Spach (ankle).

Wide receiver Anquan Boldin (ankle) remained limited.

Justin Gage is like the rest of the Titans right now. The receiver knows there could be a change at quarterback for Sunday’s game against the Jaguars.

“I shouldn’t say I sense it, but I think it is in the air right now,’’ Gage said Wednesday. “I am not sure how it is going to play out or what is going to go on. But … we have to be prepared for either quarterback.’’

So will it be Kerry Collins or Vince Young? Coach Jeff Fisher said he plans to announce the starter on Thursday.

Washington tight end Chris Cooley underwent surgery on Wednesday to repair a fractured right ankle and is expected to recover in four weeks.

Cooley was hurt on the first play of the second quarter in Monday's 27-17 setback when his ankle seemed to get caught in the field on a pass route. He was later carted to the locker room.

Redskins head coach Jim Zorn originally indicated Tuesday that the injury would have taken six-to-eight weeks to heal and Cooley, the team's leading receiver with 29 catches this season, might have landed on injured reserve.

Eli Manning has been handcuffed the past two weeks, posting quarterback ratings of 61.0 and 47.5 in losses to the Saints and Cardinals, respectively. Four weeks ago, after being replaced by David Carr late in a 27-16 victory over the Chiefs, Manning was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis in his right heel. The correlation between the signal-caller’s first rough patch of the season and his injury should be frightening for Giants fans.

Moreover, if Manning’s struggles are indeed related to the pain in his heel, they could become a lingering concern for an offense that has relied significantly on the air attack over the first half of the season.

Plantar fasciitis is an injury that requires a lengthy period of rest to go away, and it can recur at any time. Manning may be able to get better when the Giants reach their Week 10 bye, but the pain could come right back when he takes the field in Week 11 against the Atlanta Falcons.

Bucs coach Raheem Morris named rookie QB Josh Freeman the team's starter today.

Freeman, the 17th overall draft pick, made his NFL debut last Sunday in a 35-7 loss to the Patriots in London. He will replace second-year player Josh Johnson, who lost his four starts had four TDs with eight INTs and a 50.9 passer rating.

Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson missed the bulk of Wednesday's practice as he continues to recover from a lung contusion, but head coach Gary Kubiak was cautiously optimistic about the chances that the three-time Pro Bowler will play at Buffalo on Sunday.

"Andre ran a bunch today and did the pre-practice stuff but did not practice," Kubiak said. "But he took a step forward today. He did not participate in practice, but I'm encouraged by what he did."

Kubiak briefly explained when he expects Johnson, who leads the NFL with 634 receiving yards, to return to action.

"If there are no setbacks, I think we'll be smart with him, get him to Friday and see where we're at," Kubiak said. "I feel good about what I saw him do today."

Panthers coach John Fox said he's sticking with QB Jake Delhomme.

Lions WR Calvin Johnson sat out practice with a sore knee and his status for Sunday's game is unknown. Defensive end Jason Hunter (ankle) also missed today's workout. Fullback Jerome Felton was in pads and appeared to give it a go, but he was limited even in the individual drills.

Detroit Lions rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford practiced for a second straight day today, another sign that he could start in Sunday's game against the St. Louis Rams at Ford Field. There was some concern about how Stafford's knee would react after Tuesday's workout and whether there would be any swelling.

Stafford looked fairly sharp in taking snaps during the 30-minute period of practice in which the media is allowed to watch. The team was in full pads today. The only indication that Stafford still isn't 100 percent is that, during the stretching and warmup period, he only did leg lunges with one leg.

Wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. is officially in the Dolphins’ dog house.

While the 1st- and 2nd-team offenses ran two plays each at the beginning of practice, WR Ted Ginn Jr. was off to the side with rookie WR Pat Turner and practice squad WRs Julius Pruit and James Robinson.

A bit later, Ginn lined up in one-on-one passing drills, beat new practice squad safety Nate Ness and dropped an over-the-shoulder catch in the end zone.

This comes a few days after Ginn dropped three passes during a loss to the Saints. The killer was a bobble of a perfect pass from Chad Henne that was deflected into the hands of Darren Sharper, who returned it for a TD to cut the lead to 24-17 early in the second half.

Coach Tony Sparano said Monday rookie Brian Hartline would get more playing time, leading one to guess Ginn’s playing time would be reduced. Hartline had a 67-yard catch to set up the team’s final touchdown in a 46-34 loss.

On the 1st team’s first snap, Davone Bess lined up in a one-WR set, with Hartline joining him on the next play with the starting team.

Greg Camarillo lined up with the second team both times.

The NFL is "monitoring" the case of Jets wide receiver Braylon Edwards, an NFL spokesperson told The Post yesterday, though there doesn't appear to be any chance of him being suspended this season -- if at all.

Edwards on Monday was charged with misdemeanor assault in Cleveland Municipal Court for his alleged connection with an incident outside a downtown nightclub shortly before the Jets acquired him in a trade with the Browns.

The NFL spokesperson said that "under the PC [player conduct] policy, when a player like Braylon, with no prior history of conduct issues, has been charged, we wait for a court resolution. Then we would review the facts for any possible discipline."

WR Desean Jackson not practicing today with foot strain. Neither will Brian Westbrook and Darren Howard.

Anquan Boldin didn’t suffer any setbacks while playing on a high right ankle sprain during the Cardinals’ 24-17 victory over the Giants on Sunday night, and the three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver is expected to play against the Panthers this weekend, Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt told me.

Boldin also is expected to go through an increased practice load, compared to last week, when he worked out on a limited basis on Friday only.

“He was sore after the game, but we think he’ll work through that,” Whisenhunt said in a phone interview. “We think he’ll do a little bit more this week. We’ll manage that with practice, and hopefully he’ll continue to heal rapidly.”

Kansas City Chiefs coach Todd Haley will be holding a press conference Tuesday, where he’s expected to address the recent comments made by RB Larry Johnson. No time has been announced, but the news conference is expected to take place during the early afternoon. The Chiefs, on their bye week, had the session previously scheduled.

Johnson made headlines the last two days by reportedly using a gay slur and also belittling Haley via Twitter posts.

Johnson refused to speak with reporters Monday. Haley also refused comment on the situation, other than to say the team was “gathering facts.”

Encouraging Steve Slaton:
“People smell blood because he's put some balls on the ground,” Kubiak said. “They're really getting after him. I told him when I walked in with him after the game, ‘You know we're going to go as far as you take us. You've got to figure out a way to protect the football. We're going to work with you throughout the week, but you've just got to hang on to that football.'

“Steve's our guy, and I have a lot of confidence in him. It's our job to help him find a way to hold on to the football. He touches it, and good things happen. But at the same time, you can make five big plays and one turnover can get you beat. Steve understands that.”

Indeed he does.

“I hurt the team,” Slaton said. “I've got to put two hands on the ball. I have to know when I can't get any more yards and just go down.”

Rams WR Donnie Avery (ribs, hip) is a bit banged up but is expected to be OK this week.

On his weekly appearance on WEEI, Patriots coach Bill Belichick was quick to defend running back Laurence Maroney. He told “The Big Show” he would like to see the New England offensive line “create some bigger holes … and let him run.” Belichick went on to say “all of our backs handle the ball well. We haven’t fumbled. We haven’t turned it over much … we just aren’t running the ball as well as we did last year.”

The Atlanta Falcons placed safety William Moore on injured reserve with a hamstring injury and signed free agent running back Aaron Stecker on Tuesday.

The Redskins had a significant list of players with sprained ankles: Albert Haynesworth, Clinton Portis, Jason Campbell and Mike Sellers. Zorn said Haynesworth "fought through" a sprained ankle and played the whole game; Campbell also suffered his sprain in the first half. Campbell, who "got hit a bunch," according to Zorn, "played like a warrior."

The Packers have signed wide receiver Jake Allen from the practice squad and placed wide receiver Brett Swain on injured reserve, the team announced Tuesday.

Allen had been on the Packers’ practice squad since the beginning of the season. He also spent the entire 2008 season on the practice squad. The 6’4”, 196-pound player will wear number 13.

Lions Quarterback Daunte Culpepper (knee), safety Ko Simpson (hamstring) and defensive linemen Dewayne White (hamstring) and Sammie Hill (ankle) also practiced.

Fullback Jerome Felton (ankle) and defensive end Jason Hunter (ankle) were not participating in the portion of practice open to reporters, but coach Jim Schwartz said everyone was able to do something and he is “guardedly optimistic” that the Lions will be at full strength Sunday.

Lions Wide receiver Calvin Johnson (right knee) did not practice. But he did some work on the side and said he was “definitely optimistic” he would be able to play against the Rams, though “not positive.”

“It feels a lot better since last week,” said Johnson, who has missed one game. “It just something we have to take day by day and see how it goes, and as long as it goes according to schedule, we’ll be able to make a decision off of that.”

Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford said he felt better today than he did Oct. 14, the last time he tested his injured knee in practice. But he wouldn’t speculate whether he would be able to play Sunday against St. Louis.

Stafford reportedly suffered a partially dislocated right kneecap Oct. 4 at Chicago and has missed the past two games. He tested the knee in practice the Wednesday before the Lions’ last game, Oct. 18 at Green Bay, and had swelling afterward.

“It wasn’t a ton of swelling, but there was some discomfort with it,” Stafford said. “That was just a reaction. Obviously, I wasn’t ready to come back. That’s all that said.”

Stafford took about half the reps today, as he did the last time he practiced.

Don't write off Redskins TE Chris Cooley just yet.

Hours after coach Jim Zorn said the team would like place Cooley on injured reserve, the tight end said he might return in as little as four weeks.

Cooley broke a bone in his ankle in Monday's loss to the Eagles. The initial pronosis was bleak, but Cooley said in a Twitter message on Tuesday he could return again this season"

A foot specialist said TE Chris Cooley's fractured ankle is not as bad as initially thought. May play again in 4 weeks.

The Kansas City Chiefs and the National Football League are continuing to investigate the alleged comments made by Larry Johnson. Until that review is complete, the Chiefs have instructed Larry to refrain from practicing with the Chiefs or participating in other team activities. A decision regarding Larry’s status will be made once the investigation has concluded.

Fantasy Spin: It sounds as if the Chiefs are about through with Larry Johnson. Jamaal Charles would be the most likely #1 back if Larry Johnson is not there. The Chiefs are on BYE this week.

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford returned to practice today while receiver Calvin Johnson did not participate. Stafford took snaps in the No. 1 rotation during individual drills; the media is not allowed to watch any team drills during the workout.

Stafford's status for Sunday's game against the St. Louis Rams won't be better known until Wednesday when team officials will see if there's any swelling in Stafford's knee. If there's swelling, Stafford will likely be out for Sunday's game. If there is no swelling, Stafford will continue to practice and a decision on whether he'll start will probably be made later in the week.

During his reps today, Stafford had mobility, but didn't look totally comfortable or fluid.

Vikings wide receiver Bernard Berrian declined to discuss his latest leg injury Sunday, while Pro Bowl cornerback Antoine Winfield continued to dispute reports that he could be sidelined a month because of an injured right foot.

It remained unclear Monday whether the Vikings will have either one available when they play at Green Bay on Sunday.

Chris Chambers was acquired at the trading deadline in 2007 and became arguably the single-biggest catalyst to a turnaround that saw the Chargers advance to that season's AFC Championship Game.

He caught almost everything he got his hands on, making remarkable and crucial catches seem routine.

Now, Chambers is on the clock.

Indications are that the veteran receiver will be given more time to right himself but also that there is not infinite patience with his inability to get open, make catches and become a reliable target once again.

“We've got to get him going,” head coach Norv Turner said Monday. “He's got to get right.”

Turner has been explaining away Chambers' diminished production for a couple weeks, showing a concerted effort to explain why the former Pro Bowler's numbers are down and why it might look worse than it is.

Raiders HC Cable said the potential availability of left guard Robert Gallery (broken fibula), running back Darren Mcfadden (knee), right tackle Cornell Green (calf) and wide receiver Chaz Schilens (foot) would be better measured Wednesday, when the Raiders begin preparations for San Diego. The Raiders reported no new injuries that should sideline players for the Chargers.

Colts Wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez, who has been out since damaging ligaments in his left knee during the season opener, might get some practice time this week.

Colts coach Jim Caldwell provided no update on running back Donald Brown, who injured his left shoulder Sunday, but said safety Bob Sanders came through his first start of the season unscathed. Cornerback Kelvin Hayden declared himself ready to go despite suffering a pinched nerve in his neck.

The severity of wide receiver Reggie Wayne's groin injury was uncertain Monday.

"We'll probably have a little better feel for it as the week goes on. At this point, there's just a strain," Indianapolis Colts coach Jim Caldwell said. "He's getting it treated. He felt pretty good about it, but we'll see how it goes."

RB Rashard Mendenhall was projected to go much higher, which is why the Steelers didn't hesitate drafting him even though they didn't personally interview him or dig deeply into his background because never in their wildest imagination did they think he would be there.

The "hot hand" that coach Mike Tomlin said last week kept Mendenhall ahead of Willie Parker on the depth chart cooled off considerably against Minnesota.

If Parker gets healthy, things could become interesting.

Clearly, Tomlin likes Mendenhall enough to start him as Parker continues to struggle with turf toe. Tomlin, however, won't tolerate fumbling.

For the second consecutive week, Tomlin benched Mendenhall after a key fumble. Sitting Mendenhall against Cleveland was no big deal; the Steelers had that game in hand. But with the game on the line in the fourth quarter against Minnesota, Mendenhall was on the bench despite averaging a whopping 6.9 yards on 10 carries.

Browns coach Eric Mangini said today he's sticking with Derek Anderson, despite the fact he's the lowest-rated passer in the NFL with a 40.6 rating.

Mangini said he still thinks Anderson "gives us the best chance right now to move the ball. I know his numbers haven't been impressive, but he hasn't been alone in producing those numbers.''

He cited the dropped passes over the previous few weeks. He also pointed to good plays such as the 21-yard pass to tight end Michael Gaines to the Green Bay 1-yard line that almost went for a touchdown.

Mangini also stressed that not using Brady Quinn has nothing to do with keeping him from getting 70 percent of the plays, which would trigger $10.9 million in contract escalators.
"Nothing,'' said Mangini. "Zero.''

Kevin Boss said he was very briefly knocked out by the hit that came as he made a full-extension, 25-yard catch with about 4-1/2 minutes remaining in the Giants' 24-17 loss to the Cardinals. There was no penalty called, though Rolle probably will be fined.

As for Boss, he looked woozy when he got hit but he insisted yesterday he did not suffer a concussion. In fact, he somehow was able to stay in the game.

"Anytime you get hit that hard definitely the light's going to go off for a second," Boss said. "But I came to pretty quick. My head felt fine afterwards. ... It's just soreness right now. It feels like I got in a car wreck."

It is time for Sparano and Bill Parcells to pull the plug on Ted Ginn and at least admit he does not deserve the starting job he continues to be handed and must earn it back.

Ginn, the fastest receiver on the squad but someone unable to consistently get open, had eight passes thrown his way Sunday and caught two for a negligible 16 yards.

It was the damage he did when not catching the ball that killed the Dolphins.

Panthers coach John Fox said Monday that Jake Delhomme still was his best option, and his teammates lined up to defend him.

That does not, however, mean he'll get a chance to exorcise any demons in Arizona this weekend.

Fox said he couldn't guarantee that he wouldn't bench Delhomme but hadn't made a decision yet. In the past, his support of the 34-year-old quarterback has been solid, but that has changed in recent weeks, as Delhomme's turnovers have helped unravel a promising season. Less than a month ago, Fox answered a question about Delhomme's status as starter with “Yes with a capital Y,” but Monday he was far from certain.

Titans owner Bud Adams wants Vince Young starting at quarterback beginning with Sunday's game against the Jaguars.

Following the 59-0 loss to the Patriots on Oct. 18 that dropped the Titans to 0-6, Adams told The Tennessean he'd made Coach Jeff Fisher aware of his desire to see Young play.

In the past week the 86-year-old owner has been more direct, according to sources familiar with the situation. Adams wants the change now.

Adams and Fisher could not be reached for comment on Monday night.

Eagles RB Brian Westbrook, who left the game with a concussion in the first quarter, was knocked unconscious when he took an inadvertent knee to the head from linebacker London Fletcher as he was being tackled on a 5-yard gain. He lay motionless on the turf for several minutes while players from both teams knelt in prayer, until finally being helped to his feet. He was able to walk off on his own.

Reid expects him to recover fully, perhaps even in time for the Eagles' home game against the New York Giants next Sunday.

''He felt pretty good on the sideline,'' Reid said.

Jackson later was taken for X-rays on his foot shortly after catching the touchdown pass that gave the Eagles a 27-7 advantage with 1:50 remaining in the second quarter. However, they were negative, and he was back on the field in the second half.

The Colts on Sunday sustained two significant injuries – one to WR Reggie Wayne (groin) and the other two RB Donald Brown (shoulder).

Wayne, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, told Polian on Sunday following a 42-6 victory over St. Louis that “he felt good,” while Polian said the injury to Brown – a first-round selection in this past April’s 2009 NFL Draft – was a “shoulder contusion.”

“He was given some exercises to do,” Polian of Brown said Monday on his weekly radio on 97.1 Hank FM in Indianapolis. “The feeling was it wasn’t terrible. It was clearly a very painful contusion.”

Polian didn’t specify a timetable on either player, but while discussing backup running back Mike Hart later in the show said “if he [Brown] misses a week or two or three, Mike is very likely to be up and dressed and playing a big role.”

Eagles WR Desean Jackson suffered a foot sprain just before halftime.

Brian Westbrook suffered a concussion in the first quarter when he was kneed in the head by Redskins middle linebacker London Fletcher. There's a good chance he won't be able to play Sunday against the Giants.

Tight end Chris Cooley broke his right foot late in the second quarter of the Redskins' game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night.

Cooley was hurt when he tried to change direction.

"He's got a break in his ankle," Coach Jim Zorn said. "It's on the inner side of his tibia. I haven't seen the X-rays yet, but we're quite certain it's broke or fractured in some way; we'll have a better diagnosis tomorrow. He'll be out for a while. I don't know that it's a season-ending injury yet. I can't say that."

Sources with knowledge of the matter said they expected Cooley to be out for the season.

All things considered, Kevin Boss made out just fine after getting walloped by Antrel Rolle on a 25-yard catch late in Sunday night's loss to the Cardinals.

Not only did he hold onto the ball, he made it through without a concussion.

"Right when I laid out for it, I knew I was going to get hit. It was like, ‘Oh, boy, I’m going to take a shot right here,’" Boss said Monday. "But when I came to, I was pleasantly surprised I still had the ball."

Boss said he just has "general soreness" in his head and neck region, though he had no brain injuries (i.e. a concussion) to report

Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt’s day-after press conference said... WR Anquan Boldin, while sore late in the game with his bad ankle, didn’t have any setbacks. He should practice more this week

Beanie Wells is not going to be the starter anytime soon. But he will continue to get more work. Whisenhunt made three things clear: Beanie is explosive and a day when he breaks out is coming for some unsuspecting opponent; the fumbles, especially in the limited amount of carries, is not going to help him with playing time (although he acknowledged Tim Hightower has to be careful too); and there will continue to be a running back rotation, including Jason Wright, so it’s unlikely Wells is going to end up getting 25 carries a game.

The Dallas Cowboys have scheduled a 5:30 p.m. (et) press conference on Monday and are expected to announce the signing of linebacker DeMarcus Ware to a long-term contract extension.

WR Jordy Nelson (knee) remains a couple of weeks away.

Jermichael Finley had a knee sprain and will be a "long shot" for Sunday's game against Minnesota, but he will be given full week to take a shot at getting ready. Will be highly limited in practice. DB Derrick Martin had a hamstring strain, likely will miss some practice time this week. WR Brett Swain will have season-ending knee surgery. "Very unfortunate for Brett."

Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson has a lung contusion and is listed as day-to-day for Sunday's game against Buffalo, coach Gary Kubiak said Monday.

Johnson will undergo tests throughout the week before a decision is made on his availability.

"We're fortunate here," Kubiak said.

Johnson left Sunday's game against San Francisco in the fourth quarter and was taken to a hospital for X-rays. He fell on the ball, coughed up blood and went to the sideline.

Former Browns receiver Braylon Edwards was charged with misdemeanor assault today in connection with an incident outside a downtown nightclub several weeks ago, a source close to the investigation says.

Edwards was traded to the New York Jets days after he was accused of punching entertainment promoter Edward Givens about 2:30 a.m. outside the View Ultralounge & Nightclub on Prospect Avenue.

Givens, a party promoter and friend of Cavs superstar LeBron James, said Edwards is jealous of James' success and that led to the attack.

Jets running back Leon Washington, who suffered a gruesome ankle injury in yesterday's win over the Raiders, is expected to make a full recovery, according to Jets spokeman Bruce Speight.

Washington suffered a compound fracture of the right tibia and fibula. He is out for the remainder of the season and will be placed on injured reserve later today.

"Everything is going as well as we could hope at this point," Speight said.

After having 10 catches for a career-high 150 yards last week against Tennessee, Wes Welker had 10 catches for 107 yards and a touchdown yesterday in the Patriots’ 35-7 victory over the Buccaneers. It was the first time in Welker’s six-year career that he had back-to-back 10-catch performances and it served as notice that Welker is fully recovered from the knee injury that caused him to miss two games this season.

“Yeah, I think so,’’ said Welker, who now leads the Patriots in receptions with 46 for 484 yards and is tied for the team lead with four touchdown receptions. “I’m definitely getting there.’’

Welker put the Patriots ahead, 14-0, with 2:16 left in the first quarter when he took a screen pass from quarterback Tom Brady and scampered 14 yards into the end zone. The play showed the value of Welker, who moves the chains with his ability to pick up yards after the catch.

Bills HC Dick Jauron said Monday that QB Trent Edwards will not play this weekend vs. the Houston Texans.

Panthers coach Fox won't say whether he's replacing QB Jake Delhomme or not, but insisted he needed to see improvement from passing game.

Alex Smith's exemplary second half Sunday in Houston earned him more playing time. He'll be the 49ers' starting quarterback this Sunday in Indianapolis and probably for the rest of the season if the quality of his play holds up.

Coach Mike Singletary wasted no time in his Monday press conference to name Smith the starter for the Colts game based on the way he played in rallying the 49ers in the second half at Houston.

"Alex Smith will be the quarterback," Singletary said. "We're not going to be flavor of the month with this guy this week, that guy next week. I had to make a decision based on what I feel gives us the best chance to win."

Along with RB Donald Brown's shoulder injury, the Colts had to deal with a groin injury by WR Reggie Wayne. He left the game in the second quarter, returned in the third and then departed again.

Wayne spent several minutes with the medical staff after the game and declined to talk with reporters.

Wayne had a team-high seven receptions for 83 yards and one touchdown. He has started 103 consecutive regular-season games, the NFL's longest active streak among receivers.

Donald Brown's Sunday afternoon in the Edward Jones Dome was brief, productive and painful.

The Indianapolis Colts rookie running back needed only two carries to pile up a career-best 58 yards, then needed ice for his left shoulder. Brown did not return to the Colts' 42-6 win over the St. Louis Rams after spraining his shoulder on his final carry, a 13-yarder in the second quarter.

"I'll be all right," he said. "It's something I've had before in college. I know how to handle it. I'll be back (today)."

Lance Long was a Matt Cassel target on five plays. Long caught two of them.

One catch in the end zone was reviewed and ruled incomplete. The picture above comes a split second before he appears to bobble it a little bit.

"I felt like it was a touchdown," he said."but the refs saw something else but they're the ones making the call so you can't do anything about it."

On the second play of the second half, he caught a five yard pass from Cassel and was hit hard by the Chargers' Tim Dobbins. He tried to get up and kinda stumbled back down. It was fairly obvious the hit had affected him.

Trainers helped him off the field and to the bench where he stayed for the rest of the game.

"I feel good," he said after the game. "I feel real good. Made me kind of mad that I couldn't get up but things happen and I"ll be ready to go next week."

Bengals rookie running back Bernard Scott got shaken up with a knee injury and fullback Jeremi Johnson left with a knee injury. Johnson said after the game he’ll be back and Scott appeared to be OK.

Vikings WR Bernard Berrian strained his left hamstring during the second quarter against the Steelers, but his status wasn’t immediately known.

Berrian pulled up lame on a second-and-15 pass play and limped to the sideline. He entered the game as the Vikings’ second-leading receiver with 234 yards.

Vikings FB Naufahu Tahi also left the game with an undisclosed injury suffered during the second quarter. Tahi returned to the field in the third quarter.

The Green Bay Packers lost one of their emerging offensive threats when tight end Jermichael Finley sprained his left knee in Sunday's 31-3 victory over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.

How much time, if any, Finley will miss is not yet known. Coach Mike McCarthy said Finley will have an MRI on Monday.

The Rams lost long snapper Chris Massey for the season with what's believed to be a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Massey, who has been automatic on punt, extra point, and field goal snaps since entering the league in 2002, suffered the injury with 5 1/2 minutes to play in the second quarter on punt coverage. Tight end Billy Bajema filled in for Massey the rest of the game.

Receiver Andre Johnson left Sunday’s 24-21 victory over the San Francisco 49ers with a chest injury but should be ready to play in the next game at Buffalo.
Johnson, who was injured in the fourth quarter, was taken to a hospital for X-rays before returning to Reliant Stadium to shower and dress after the Texans’ second consecutive victory.
“They’re telling me it’s a chest contusion,” coach Gary Kubiak said.
Kubiak will have an update on Johnson at his regular news conference this afternoon.

Quarterback Marc Bulger had his left (non-throwing) hand X-rayed after the game, but said it was for precautionary reasons only.

Jamarcus Russell’s benching in Sunday’s game against the Jets doesn’t mean he’ll lose his starting job.

Jets RB Leon Washington was ruled out of the game against the Raiders after sustaining a lower leg injury during the first quarter.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak said WR Andre Johnson went to a Houston hospital for further examination on a chest contusion that he suffered during the fourth quarter against the 49ers. Johnson, a three-time Pro Bowler, returned for one play after hurting his chest, then came out of the game for good.

Long, promoted from the practice squad before Sunday's game, was injured on Kansas City's first drive of the second half when he took a shot to the head from Dobbins on a crossing route.
Long tried to get up, wobbled to the left, then to the right before an official stepped in and got him to take a knee. Kansas City's training staff came out and helped Long to the bench.

Brett Favre, the veteran quarterback was sacked four times today and took a big hit from linebacker James Harrison to end the game. "It would have felt a lot better had we won, obviously," Favre said when asked about his physical well being following the game. "But right after the game it's hard to tell, either way. The last one was a pretty good shot. It's disappointing, phyiscally, we knew it would be a Pittsburgh matchup, that's what they do."

Bernard Berrian refused to discuss the injury he suffered during the Vikings' 27-17 loss to the Steelers today at Heinz Field, but the wide receiver was wearing a wrap on his left leg as he dressed in the locker room.

The injury appears to be Berrian's hamstring given that the wrap was on his thigh. Berrian suffered a hamstring injury in the Vikings' preseason opener at Indianapolis but in that case it was his right hamstring. Berrian had two receptions for 18 yards before leaving the game.

Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne and running back Donald Brown have been injured in Indianapolis' game against the St. Louis Rams.

Both were injured in the second quarter Sunday and the team said it was questionable whether they would return.
Wayne had six receptions for 70 yards and a 6-yard touchdown before leaving with a strained groin muscle. He caught four passes for 61 yards on the opening possession.
Brown left with a sprained shoulder. Joseph Addai's backup, he had two carries for 58 yards, including a 45-yard run in the first quarter.

With the Patriots placing receiver Brandon Tate on their active roster Saturday, Tate is projected to play Sunday against the Buccaneers. Tate holds the NCAA career record in combined kick and punt return yards.

Fox's John Czarnecki speculating says... It appears that Kurt Warner will have all three of his top receivers ready to go against the Giants. Anquan Boldin (ankle) and Steve Breaston (knee) will both play despite missing a lot of practice time this past week. The Giants want to be able to run and control the clock in order to keep their porous secondary off the field. It might not be easy, considering Arizona has the NFL's top run defense. In fact, both teams need to throw a lot in order to be successful.

The Bills start Ryan Fitzpatrick for Trent Edwards, who suffered a concussion last Sunday against the Jets. Fitzpatrick rallied the Bills from a 10-point deficit to a 16-13 overtime victory. Meanwhile, the Bills have junked the no-huddle offense and offensive coordinator Alex Van pelt has moved to the sidelines to call the plays. Fred Jackson will return kicks again for the benched Roscoe Parrish.

Even without RBs Fred Taylor and Sammy Morris, plus LT Matt Light, the Patriots definitely appear to be hitting a solid stride because Tom Brady is looking better and more comfortable every week.

What should help the Dolphins is that new QB Chad Henne has shown better arm strength than Chad Pennington and it gives the offense a better chance to go deep to Ted Ginn

The Cowboys believe Roy Williams (ribs) will play, but they don't need him that much with the emergence of Miles Austin and the expected use of both tight ends, Jason Witten and Martellus Bennett.

Shaun Hill is coming off his worst game as a starter, but he also has RB Frank Gore back and that's a huge key to San Francisco's offense. The 49ers will want to pound Gore between the tackles and try to hit Crabtree with some quick hitch passes, hoping he can break some plays after the catch.

There is no question that No. 1 pick Michael Crabtree will play a lot as an outside receiver for the 49ers, probably at the expense of Josh Morgan.

The Packers have been struggling at running back and signed Ahman Green (inactive today) this week to help Ryan Grant.

The Browns, who had 12 players suffering from the flu this week, probably will use Josh Cribbs in the wildcat formation. Cribbs took 13 snaps last Sunday and gained 45 yards on six carries. He also had an interception inside the 20-yard line.

Because of all of his off-the-field escapades, this will be kicker Jeff Reed's final season in Pittsburgh. He will be a free agent.

The key in the Vikings- Steelers matchup will be which team is able to establish the run. The Vikings have been balanced all year on offense, giving teams a healthy dose of Adrian Peterson, which has helped to protect Brett Favre. Lately, though, Favre has been taking a bit more control. In Week 6 against Baltimore, the Vikings came out passing first and then closed out with Peterson.

Houston is the league's worst defense in the red zone, which happens to be where the 49ers' offense is at its best -- San Francisco ranks 24th in offense overall but ninth in the red zone.

Even though the injuries persist for the New York, Kurt Warner should be prepared for a Giants defense looking to avenge Week 6's embarrassment. Translation: The blitz is coming.

Bills TE Shawn Nelson was downgraded Saturday from doubtful to out for Buffalo’s game against Carolina Sunday.

Nelson was not expected to play after failing to practice all week due to illness. He had been battling flu-like symptoms.

Nelson’s absence leaves Buffalo with just two healthy tigh ends on the roster is Derek Fine and Jonathan Stupar.

Receiver Anquan Boldin participated in practice Friday for the first time this week, and coach Ken Whisenhunt said he was encouraged by Boldin's recovery from a sprained ankle. Boldin is pleased with his recovery, too. "Every day, it's getting better," he said. "No setbacks yet." The official injury report hasn't been released yet, but I would guess Boldin will be listed as questionable. Whisenhunt said tight end Stephen Spach (ankle) isn't likely to play.

Eagles players definitely out for the game include linebaker Omar Gaither, who had one pin inserted in his foot today to help repair the Lisfranc foot injury he suffered this week. He's out for the season.

Wide receiver Kevin Curtis may be out for a while after having his knee scoped today. Reid has not ruled him out for the season.

"MRI's don't always show everything so they went in and just checked things out," Reid said. "There wasn't much in there that they had to work on. They just snipped a few little things in there, but it wasn't a major thing."

Rookie Jeremy Maclin will start his fourth straight game and said he plans to keep the starting job even if Curtis returns this season.

Cornerback DeAngelo Hall missed his first practice as a Redskin this morning with a tender knee, but running back Clinton Portis returned from his sprained ankle.

Coach Jim Zorn said that both Hall and Portis will start Monday against Philadelphia.

However, defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth remains questionable with a sprained ankle suffered in last Sunday's loss to Kansas City.

Defensive tackle Cornelius Griffin will also start despite a sprained left elbow.

Lions quarterback Daunte Culpepper practiced Friday after sitting out drills Thursday.

Those who did not participate in Friday's practice included Matthew Stafford, Calvin Johnson and Larry Foote.

DeAndre Levy also sat out, but Lions coach Jim Schwartz would not go into detail about what prevented the rookie linebacker from participating.

"We had a lot of guys that were held out for various reasons," Schwartz said.

Stafford was not present on the field or the sidelines during the early portion of practice that is open to the media, and he turned down interview requests following practice.

Schwartz said Stafford would test his injured right knee as soon as he is able to, but he refused to speculate when that would be.

In the month since Michael Vick's controversial return to the NFL, his involvement in the Eagles' offense has decreased with each game.

The quarterback-multipurpose player has gone from being on the field for 11 plays with the first team in his first game to five in the second game to just two in the Eagles' 13-9 loss at Oakland on Sunday.

While there is reason to believe that Vick will be used more often when the Eagles face Washington on Monday night - how could he not? - there is some confusion as to why the team would risk so much in acquiring the notorious player if it intended to use him only sparingly.

Vick, however, has had no problems with his limited role.

"The Michael Vick from two years ago was used to being a starter in this league and used to being in the limelight, being the guy who takes all the snaps," Vick said yesterday. "It's different, but I can adjust. I can adapt to any situation, and this was one of them."

Rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez has been without Cotchery for the past two weeks, essentially, and has struggled. Cotchery played against the Dolphins but was a shell of himself with just one catch for four yards.
WR Brad Smith (quad) is also out and Ryan said there's a good chance Smith will be out next week against the Dolphins. He, too, will miss his second straight game.

The Raiders will be without RB Darren Mcfadden (knee).

Jets wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery says it's best he sits against the Raiders and comes back healthy next week against the Dolphins.
Cotchery will miss his second straight game with a hamstring injury.
"I don't want to be out there for five games just half speed,'' said Cotchery, the Jets' leading receiver with 24 catches for 360 yards and a touchdown. "I just want to be out there ready to go full speed and be able to help the offense and not hinder the offense. That's the focus to get back to full speed so I can get out there and be who I want to be.''
Said coach Rex Ryan: "We definitely don't want this happening all the time and each week we're wondering if he's going to be up. We don't want to make it worse. If we have a chance to get him 100 percent or near 100 percent, that's probably the best option.''

"When you look at Isaac Bruce, Josh (Morgan) and (Michael) Crabtree, they're all going to play about the same. It just depends on how the game goes and the flow of the game," Singletary said.

--Singletary was asked if he's one of the team's best three receivers or is he getting there? "He's getting there. Obviously, you see the talent there. He's going to play that much faster when he gets it," Singletary said. "He's definitely a talented guy, and once the game starts, we'll see how it goes."

--"Do I expect him (Crabtree) to make plays? Absolutely. That's why he's playing," Singletary said.

--Delanie Walker will retain his role as the 49ers' primary kickoff return man, Singletary said. Arnaz Battle will handle punt-return chores.

Frank Gore will start at running back after missing the past two games with a bum ankle.

Bears RB Adrian Peterson (right knee) will miss the game Sunday

Running back Felix Jones began the week practicing on a limited basis and adjusting to the brace on his knee. He finished going full speed without the brace.

That's something Cowboys coach Wade Phillips hadn't seen since Jones sprained his left knee against Carolina on Sept. 28. Phillips expects Jones to be at full speed Sunday against Atlanta.

"I feel good about where Felix is," Phillips said Friday. "He looks fast. He's moved well, so I think he'll get back into his role, which could be quite a bit during the game."

Cardinals wide receiver Anquan Boldin was limited in practice on Friday with an ankle injury and is listed as questionable for Sunday night's game against the New York Giants.

Boldin, who suffered the injury during Arizona's 27-3 victory over Seattle, missed practice on Wednesday and Thursday before returning to practice field in a limited role on Friday. He has 306 yards and a touchdown on 29 catches this season.

Chris "Beanie" Wells (hip) has been limited in practice all week and is also questionable for Sunday. Wide receiver Steve Breaston (knee) is probable after being limited in practice this week.

Tight end Stephen Spach (ankle) has been ruled out for Sunday.

Jets WR Braylon Edwards (quadricep probable) took reps Friday. The Jets will need him with Jericho Cotchery out again with a hamstring. However, the matchup is tough for Braylon. The Raiders will put shut-down corner Nnamdi Asamoah on him full-time. The Jets will likely go run-heavy in an effort to get up the confidence of their young QB.

Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin (ankle questionable) returned to limited practice Friday. Ken Whisenhunt said Boldin looked better than expected, but we are still aren't confident enough to start Boldin with it being a late game.

Bills QB Trent Edwards (concussion out) missed practice again Friday. He has been officially ruled out for Friday. Ryan Fitzpatrick will get the start.

Packers WR Greg Jennings (hip probable) returned to limited practice Friday and is probable to play Sunday. The Packers look to have a big day against the Browns, and Jennings looks almost certain to start barring a setback.

Jets WR Jerricho Cotchery (hamstring out) has been ruled out for Sunday. This was already looking like a bad matchup for the Jets passing game, and things are only getting worse. Look for the Jets to attack the Raiders on the ground.

Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall (knee probable) practiced fully again Friday and is expected to start against the Vikings. Mendenhall figures to get two drives to Willie Parker's one, but the Vikings are shutting down the run, especially in the red zone.

Giants WR Mario Manningham (back probable) practiced fully on Friday and looks set for a Sunday Night showdown with the Cardinals.

Eagles RB Brian Westbrook (ankle) took reps Friday. He is healthy, and wants more touches.

49ers RB Frank Gore (ankle, foot probable) took reps Friday. Gore is looking healthy and should be a great start this week.

Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (heel questionable) practiced fully Friday, and barring a gameday inactive should be a great play this weekend against the Bills league worst rush defense.

Eli Manning (foot probable) practiced fully again Friday and will start as normal.

Redskins RB Clinton Portis (ankle) missed practice again Friday. He hasn't practiced yet this week, but is still expected to play. Portis plays Monday night, so his official status will be known tomorrow.

Colts WR Anthony Gonzalez (knee out) has been ruled out for week 7.

Chargers RB Ladainian Tomlinson (illness probable) returned to full practice Friday after missing Thursday with the flu. Tomlinson looks like he will start against a bad Chiefs defense. Tomlinson looked better last week, and could be a decent play this week.

Cardinals RB Beanie Wills (hip questionable) was limited in practice again Friday. Wells hasn't produced much this year. Keep him on your bench with the late kickoff.

Vikings RB Adrian Peterson (ankle) returned to full practice Friday and is set to start this weekend. Peterson faces a tough matchup in the Steelers, but must always be started.

Cardinals WR Steve Breaston (knee probable) was limited in practice again Friday. Breaston is expected to start, and will be leaned on heavily if Boldin can't go or is limited.

Falcons RB Michael Turner (chest probable) was limited again at practice Friday. Turner looks probable to start in a good matchup against the Cowboys.

Cowboys RB Marion Barber (thigh, thumb probable) practiced fully all week and is looking as healthy as he has all season. Barber will wear a splint on his thumb, but shouldn't affect his touches.

Bengals WR Chad Ochocinco (hip probable) missed practice with a "tight" hip. It is not considered serious, and coach Lewis expects him to be fine for Sunday.

Rams WR Donnie Avery (hip probable) returned to full practice Friday and says he had no problems with the hip. Avery is expected to start against the Colts.

Raider WR Chaz Schilens (foot questionable) could not finish practice Friday. If you had any thoughts about starting Chaz (which you shouldn't have), scrap them now.

Giants RB Ahmad Bradshaw (ankle) practiced Friday without the protective boot, and is expected to play Sunday per his usual routine.

Patriots RB Sammy Morris (knee out) has been officially ruled out for Sunday. He did not travel with the team. Laurence Maroney becomes a nice play against the Bucs. Benjarvus Green-ellis could see some garbage time production.

Cowboys RB Felix Jones (knee probable) practiced fully all week and looks like he will play Sunday. It's unsure how many touches he will get with Marion Barber and Tashard Choice already in the backfield. Jones will likely catch passes out of the backfield.

Vikings WR Percy Harvin (shoulder questionable) was limited again Friday. His production has been way down since the injuries started piling up. Sidney Rice and Bernard Berrian are the better plays until Harvin's production steps up.

Patriots WR Wes Welker (knee) practiced fully all week. Welker rises into the top 10 for the week, as this is as healthy as he has been.

Bengals WR Chris Henry (illness questionable) missed practice Friday. He is not a good play this week.

Cowboys WR Roy Williams (ribs probable) practiced fully Friday. Earlier in the week he declared himself 100% and ready to play, however coach Wade Phillips displayed some concern today, saying he does not want Williams in a situation where he will only be able to play a few snaps before reinjuring himself. Miles Austin looks like a safer fantasy play here.

Browns K Phil Dawson (groin doubtful) missed practice again Friday and is doubtful. Billy Cundiff will handle kicking duties if any are required. It's not a certainty with the Browns.

Jets WR Brad Smith has been ruled out for the week.

Bills TE Shawn Nelson (illness doubtful) did not practice Friday. Derek Fine will take the extra TE snaps, but don't expect much.

Terrell Owens did not practice Friday. He was merely getting rest, but has lost his fantasy relevance in Buffalo.

Browns RB Jerome Harrison (illness) returned to full practice Friday after missing earlier in the week due to illness. He will likely back up Jamal Lewis.

Panthers RB Brad Hoover (back questionable) practiced fully Friday.

Browns TE Robert Royal (illness, hamstring, finger questionable) returned to limited practice Friday but is not a good TE option.

Browns TE Steve Heiden (knee doubtful) missed practice Friday after missing all week and is doubtful for Sunday.

Browns WR Chansi Stuckey (illness probable) returned to limited practice Friday after being sick. He is probable for Sunday.

Patriots QB Tom Brady (right shoulder probable) makes his usual "probable" appearance on the injury report. He's good.

Earlier Friday, Wade Phillips wasn't sure if Roy Williams would be ready to play, but the wide receiver made it through the practice unscathed and will play Sunday vs. Atlanta.

Phillips' doubts must have been eased too because Williams is listed as probable on the official injury report.

"I'm good," Williams said. "I'll be there."

The question now is whether the Cowboys dress rookie Kevin Ogletree in case of an emergency if Williams is slowed during the game. I can't see the Cowboys bringing six wide receivers to the game.

WR Chaz Schilens couldn't finish practice Friday, his return Sunday is now questionable, Raiders coach Tom Cable said.

Given that the St. Louis Rams might have to put up 50 or so points Sunday to have a shot at derailing the unbeaten Colts, the news that WR Donnie Avery has recovered from his bruised hip and will suit up Sunday was welcome at Rams Park.

Avery reported “no problem at all” after fully participating in practice Friday. Avery, injured last Sunday at Jacksonville after grabbing a 17-yard touchdown pass earlier, sat out Wednesday and took only limited reps Thursday.

“It’s a lot better,” Avery said. “I’m feeling really fluent out there.”

Anquan Boldin did make it back to practice today, working on a limited basis and surprising coach Ken Whisenhunt. “I didn’t think he’s move around as well as he did,” Whisenhunt said. Boldin said there have been no setbacks and he is improving daily. That’s good news for the Cards, and while Whisenhunt added that Early Doucet has a chance to be active this weekend — that’s a possibility even if Boldin plays, given Boldin’s ankle. But in the end I also think Boldin will be able to play at least some.

Willie Parker on his turf toe: "I'm starting to plant, cut and do all that stuff because it's starting to heal up,'' Parker said following Thursday's practice. "It's still swollen, but it's getting a lot better. This week is the best that it's been.''

Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said that backup RB Felix Jones (sprained left knee) shouldn't be limited in Sunday's game and will probably wear a knee brace.

Roy Williams said Thursday he will play Sunday against the Falcons, but coach Wade Phillips is not so sure.

Williams' bruised ribs are still giving him some trouble even though he has practiced every day this week, and Phillips does not want to get caught in a situation where Williams lasts only a few plays Sunday and cannot continue.

Williams will practice today, which will go a long way to determining his availability Sunday. Even if Williams plays, there is a chance rookie Kevin Ogletree could be active for a second straight weeks. Just guessing, but I would expect Williams to be listed as questionable for the game.

"You can tell he's in pain sometimes during practice, catching the ball, those kinds of things," Phillips said. "I think it's lessened as the week has gone along, but we'll see where he is today."

Quarterback Trent Edwards officially is out for Sunday's game, and defensive tackle Kyle Williams is questionable after participating in part of practice on Friday.

Edwards was not at practice Friday. Said coach Dick Jauron: "As far as I know, and I haven’t seen him but I have finally texted him – they allowed me to text him – he says he’s doing better, and (trainer) Bud (Carpenter) says he’s doing better also."

Bob Sanders will make his first appearance and start of the season Sunday when the Indianapolis Colts visit the St. Louis Rams in the Edward Jones Dome.

The veteran safety and 2007 NFL Defensive Player of the Year returns to the starting lineup after missing the Colts’ first five games while fully recovering from offseason surgery on his right knee.

“He’s going to play,’’ coach Jim Caldwell said this morning. “He’s feeling good. If he can go, he’s starting.’’
